Virginia State Captures CIAA Baseball Crown with close win over ECSU Britton Marable, a freshman catcher blasted a seventh-inning homer to drive in three runs and helped lift Virginia State University to a 7-6 victory over Elizabeth City State University to earn the 1998 CIAA Baseball Championship. Allen Foster followed with a triple and scored on a hot shot by Duane Barnes. Marable and Barnes were both named to the All-Tourna ment team. Marable was also named the tournament's most valuable play er. The Championship consisted of an 18 hole. The Broncos led all schools at the conclusion of the first round and went on to claim the crown with a score of 626. St. Augustine's finished second and Johnson C. Smith finished third with 672 and 700 strokes respective ly. - Saud Jabah-Nash of St. Augus tine's was named 1998 CIAA Tour nament Medalist accumulating 149 strokes over two days. N.C Central Crowned CIAA Softball Champions North Carolina Central defeated Virginia State in two straight games of a best of three series to win the 1988 CIAA Softball championship. The Lady Eagles won by lop sided scores in both games. In the first game, Stephanie Spindler hit a timely three-run double in the fifth inning to secure die win for the Lady Eagles. Spindler was named to die All-CIAA and All-Tournament Teams. Michelle Harrison, CIAA Player of the Year, was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a homerun. In game two, NCCU scored seven runs in die first innins and never looked back. The Lady Eagles limited Virginia State to just one unearned run and three hits for the entire game. NCCU pitcher Lisa Hicks was named Tournament MVP. N.C Central dominates J.C Smith to win CIAA Tennis Championship The second-seeded North Caroli na Central dominated die Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls (7-2) to claim the 1998 CIAA Tennis Championship in Raleigh, N.C. rccendy. Rain and poor playing conditions forced the site of the championship to move from its original site in Fayetteville, NC to indoor courts at the Raleigh Racquet Club in Raleigh, n.c. r St Augustine's College defeated Winston-Salem State University in the consolation match. Johnson C. Smith defeated WSSU (8-1 and NCCU defeated St. Augustine's in the semifinal rounds of play. Garrick Jones of Johnson C.
