Press Box fiamrm* Bl end, who was being recruited by Clcmson and several other Divi sion I programs. This Rams defensive unit doesn't have the players like Anthony Blaylock. Derrick Beasley and Donald Franks who went on to play in the NFL. What it does have, however, is a bunch of overachievers who don't mind busting their butts for their teammates and Faison. Faison attributes the unit's success to its work ethic and will ingness to listen and improve. After watching his team shut down powerful Virginia Union and star tailback Andre Braxton, Faison said his players are begin ning to understand how the pieces are supposed to Tit togeth er to form one piece. The Rams were playing without the services of Jai Moody, defensive end/out side linebacker, who was injured in the North Carolina A&T game. "I thought it was a great effort," Faison said of his defense. "We were able to contain No. 7 (Braxton) and that was the key. He had rushed for more than 300 yards in three games and we were able to shut him down. Without Jai, we didn't know how we'd react. We knew they liked to run to the weak side and that's where Jai plays. But we came up with a big effort. We had every one running to the football and putting a hat on somebody. "I think we now have the kind of experience that is going to pay off for us on defense," Faison added. "They've been together now for two years and tbey understand the concept. The only players we really lost from last year were linebackers and we have a lot of guys we put in there. All of our guys understand the team concept and that makes it work." The Rams will need the same type effort on Saturday against Fayetteville State, which features a shifty running back in Ralph Jackson. But Faison expects his squad to continue to band together. "< "We just want the guys to keep working hard and pushing each other," Faison said. If the Rams can do that, they could be looking at another supe rior performance from their defensive unit. Carver JV from page Bl Nearly every aspect of Carver's attack worked well during the game. On the third possession of the game, Greg Dalton took a screen pass from Cunningham and weaved his way 85 yards for a touchdown. Josh Chandler con verted the point after, the first successful kick of the season for Carver. He connected on two other PATs to give Carver a lift in that category. Carver's defense led by Reggie Cannady and Keith Springs, got into the act as well. Willie Daniels, the Yellowjackets' nose guard, picked up a fumble and rambled into the end zone from 30 yards out for a touchdown. After Dal ton scored on a 15-yard pass from Silas Pressley, to give Carver a 33 7 halftime lead, Sean Wilkes inter cepted a pass and sprinted 97 yards for the Yellowjackets' final score. ? Carver was able to substitute freely for the remainder of the game and give its reserves playing ft" tune. It was Carver's most complete game of the season. The Yellow jackets opened the season with a 16-6 win over North Forsyth and after a two-week layoff defeated Reynolds 22-20. Carver had little time to rest after that game, hav ing to face West Forsyth the fol lowing Monday. The Yellowjack ets led until the fourth quarter when West took a 14-6 lead. Carv er went 75 yards in 2:25 seconds to ue the score and send it into overtime. The final touchdown, a pass to Dalton, came with 11 sec onds remaining. Cunningham passed to Pressley for the extra point. Penalties pushed the Yellow jackets back on both of their pos sessions in overtime. But the defense responded by holding the Titans. It appeared that the game would go to triple overtime when West missed a field goal on fourth down. But Carver was called for roughing the holder and West got the football on the two-yard line and scored the winning touch down. "Our kids played well in the face of a lot of adversity," Davis said. "We ended up playing three games within a seven-day period. That's a lot to ask afgroup of 14 and 15-year-olds to do. But they kept their heads up and played through it. 1 think it's going to pay off for them in the long run. "None of the playfcrs on the team had ever lost a football game at Carver High, so that was diffi cult. But sports are a microcosm of society. There are going to be ups and downs in life. You tell your kids to always expect the best but be prepared to accept the worst." Kmggi* Connady Ston WUkm? Taurk Kkm McCloud from pagr Bl ing to McCloud.
