? together a 14-play drive that cul
' minated in a touchdown run by
' quarterback Tory Woodbury on
? a bootleg to take a 7-0 lead. The
? Rams mixed up their running
and passing on the drive. It also
; showed that WSSU is beginning
? to become mentally strong, over
! coming a holding penalty that
negated a touchdown run by
; Tyrone Murphy.
; Murphy and his offensive line
! gained enough confidence to pro-,
duce its best rushing effort in'
? quite a while. Murphy, who
? struggled through the opener
against Catawba and broke out
Iwith a big game against A&T,
rushed for a career-high 201
>}rards. It was the Rams' first 200
'yard rushing game by an individ
ual since Richard Huntley's
-Efforts three seasons ago.
Murphy, a 5-10, 180-pound
;?enior, credited his offensive line
;Tor opening the holes.
?1 "All the. credit japes to the
lyfThnsive'lme," he said. "I wasn't
;2k>ing anything special. I was just
;J>ut there playing football and
paving fun. This was something
;*ve knew we could do."
Murphy displayed a combina
tion of power and elusiveness in
I<he open field. His best effort was
?,i 52-yard scamper which set up
?Jhe Rams' final touchdown.
"I take my running style on
Whatever is needed," he said. "If I
- ;$ieed to use power to get a first
Ijlown, I will. Then if I have to use
J?iy speed, I have to do that."'
'I Murphy said he and many of
the Rams seniors put pressure on
themselves to boost the team to a
|wictory.
?I "We knew it was important,"
?jie said. "This game puts us back
I?nto the focus we need for a
*?lAA championship. It's going
.Jo give us a lot of confidence."
J* The Rams offensive line dom
inated despite the fact that it was
?flaying without Eric McDavid,
__tm All-CIAA center. Travis Hair
ston filled in admirably as he has
for the previous two games.
"The thing that we try to do is
when somebody goes down
someone else has to fill in," Hair
ston said. "The center has to be a
leader and I tried to help do that.
We hung in there when it was
tough and worked hard. We were'
able to get a lot of push and that
really got our offense going."
While the win was sweet for
the Rams, one game doesn't
make a season. Blount said the
Rams have to now stay focused
with a Homecoming battle
against Fayetteville State coming
up on Saturday. Fayetteville
started the season 2-0 before los
ing to North Carolina A&T last
Saturday. The Broncos are 1-0 in
the CIAA.
"I'm very pleased with where
we are," Blount said. "But we
have to continue to keep our eyes
on what we're after this year."
Woodbury said the Rams
can't get caught up in the distrac
tions going on off the field this
week.
"We have to keep our foe is," "
he said. "With homecoming you
know there are going to be all
kinds of distractions. The coach
es do a lot to keep our minds off
that and on preparing for the
game. The players know its a big
game and they have to come out
and play."

Ijnake it 12-0.
> Meanwhile, Western's offense
'was unable to get untracked. Coach
^ Causey and his staff worked hard
Ito get the right combination out on
I the field, but to no avail.
!* However, the Panther train
iJcept rolling as Hastye took a quar
;<erback sneak from the one yard
line for another score. The two
; point conversion gave Dudley a 20
;0 lead going into intermission.
? "(At halftime) I just told them
|ive're a better team than that and
;3ve've got to compete," Causey said.
;!*! told them to play like they're
; capable of and take it one series at
;i time."
;? And that's exactly what the
;Hornets did. Their defense stepped
;lip and the offense started clicking.
Western's Luard hit Todd Mon
? Joe with a 36 yard touchdown right
J)efore the end of the third quarter
?Jo put Western on the board for the
|jirst time.
'* In the fourth quarter Hornet
?Junning back Frank Allred contin
?Jied his bull-Uke running gaining
Jive to eight yards each carry.
> On second down and 10 Allred
Jook a handoff and scampered 32
'yards for the score. He added the
?two point conversion to make bring
his team within six points, 20-14.
"Frank is a runner between the
tackles," Causey said. "We kinda
went to him because he was getting
his yardage. He did a great job."
Hayes says there's no excuse for
the way his team came out in the
second half. v
"We got a little bit too relaxed
after halftime on the defensive
end," he said. "Western came right
at us. We're fortunate to come out
with the win and hopefully our kids
can learn that no lead is a safe lead
unless you blow someone out. We'll
keep practicing a little harder each
week and see what happens."
Dudley accumulated 237 yards
offensively behind the running of
several backs. Markiece Hayes
gained 87 yards, Clay finished with
30 yards and McCormick accumu
lated 29 yards. Hastye ran for 30
yards and passed for only 10 yards
Defensively Hayes says Clay,
Chris Douglas, Jermaine Ward,
Ronald Crawford, Tafari Martin
and B.J. Rutledge were their top
performers.
"I feel our defensive stand near
the goal line in the fourth quarter
gave us the shot in the arm that we
needed to sustain," Hayes said. "We
bent but we didn't break."
Dudley (2-2-1, 1-0 Conf.) will
be on the road tonight to take on
Glenn. Western (2-3,0-1 Conf.) will
entertain Carver.
