Vikings enjoy successM Homecoming Week widi ^ wins Small to The CwuwcLt The Tiny Vikings celebrated Homecoming by defeating the Walkertown Wo If pack in three of five Pop Warner Football games last Saturday at Mineral Springs. The Vikings' Flags captured a 20-0 win. the Mighty-Mites played to a 13-13 tie, the Junior Pee Wees lost by a 12-0 score, the Pee Wees won 34-0, the Junior Midgets captured a 12-6 win and the Junior Bantams took a 28-14 victory. The Homecoming activities got underway at 8:30 a.m. with a parade, which featured the Carv er High Marching Band and the Marching 100's from the YWCA. The program also crowned Kings and Queens for each of the five football and cheerleading squads. In the Flag Division, Marcus Bucknor and Jalisa Yountz were crowned King and Queen. Jiwan Williamson and Kichelfe Pugh earned that dis tinction in the Mighty-Mites. Devon Sims and NeNe Crockett w ere crowned King and Queen of the Jr. Pee Wees. Raymond Robinson and Allyson Gore took home the crowns of King and Queen in the Pee Wee division. The Junior Midget King and Queen were Troy Berney and Lameka Gambrell. Jason Jowers was named King of the Junior Bantams and Johnelle Ligons was Junior Bantams Queen. mere were several other awards handed out during the course of the day. they included Scholastic Recognition for all players and cheerleaders who received straight A's on their report cards. The savings bonds were given courtesy of Cleveland Ave. Christian Church and Rev. Sheldon McCarter. Winners in the Jr. Pee Wee division were Quintonio Hay, Thomas Speaks, Kirarh Earl and Monique Foy. In the Pee Wees, Nathan Jones, Ray mond Robinson, Shawnte Gates received savings bonds. In the Jr. Bantam division, savings bonds were awarded to Whitney Mack Obie, Andrea Lowe and Jason Jowers. The Vikings also chose win ners of their annual Homecom ing Raffle. Patricia Perkins, Mr& Eaton and Clem Kimbrough won cash prizes. Jo Anne Bush, publicity direc tor for the organization said she had a long list of sponsors that she would like to thank for par ticipating in the event. She also said she wanted to give special recognition to Rev. Defense sparks Vikings' Junior Midgets to 12-6 win over Walkertown Wolfpack The Tiny Vikings bounced back from a disappointing loss to the Tiny Falcons with a 12-6 win .. > over Walkcrtown last Saturday on Homecoming Day at Mineral Springs School. The Vikings went ahead in the first quarter on a touchdown run by Andrew Greer to give them a 6-0 lead. Both teams moved the ball well in the first half, but the Vikings' defense came up with big plays to prevent the Wolfpack from posting a score. Leading the way were Larry Ogles by. Rod rick Ruth and Eric Eaton. Walkertown tied the score at 6-6 when it recovered a Viking fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. However, the Vikings fought back from adver sity and put together a 14-play, 65-yard drive that was capped off by an 18-yard run by Avron Underwood. Walkertown moved the ball back within scoring position in the final minutes of the game, but again the Vikings' defense rose up to stop the threat and seal the victory. The key play was a quar terback sack on fourth down. Coach Larry Lisenby said his team played well, as did the Wolf pack. "This was a game that was real enjoyable for the fans and coaches alike. I am glad we had the 12 and not the six, when it was all said and done." Vikings' Bantams use to touch down runs by Little to defeat Wolfpack, 28-14 The Tiny Vikings came up with some much-needed offensive punch and took a 28-14 victory over the Walkertown Wolfpack last Saturday. Corey Little scored two touchdowns to pace the Vikings. The Vikings also got touchdown runs by Jason Jowers and Ralph Pearson en route to the win. The trio of Little, Jowers and Pearson combined to pace a hard-nosed running attack for the Vikings. Coach Willie Ashford Jr. also credited his defensive unit for its outstanding play. The Vikings gave up two touchdowns, but played well throughout the game. "The defense played well for three quarters," Ashford said. "We still need a lot of work to get back the focus we had and to have something to really build on. Some kids stepped up a notch for us." Little, Reginald Pouncey, Johnny Oglesby and Pearson paced the defensive effort. Other key contributors included Chester Timmons, William Terry and Kassim Geddings. . t Viking Flags notch another shut oat, defeat Walkertown 20-0 The Vikings Flags used a strong defensive effort to record its fourth consecutive shutout and rolled to a 20-0 win over the Wolfpack last Saturday. Frederick Mitchell took the opening kickoff and sped down field for ah apparent touchdown. However, it was ruled that he stepped out of bounds. That, however, didn't deter the team. The Vikings quickly stormed in for a touchdown to take the lead and they never looked back in improving their record to 4-0. Mitchell added a touchdown and two conversion runs to lead the Vikings' ground game. Michael Lawrence and Damian Linebergcr combined for 130 yards and two touchdowns to support him. Robert Miller III again led the team in defensive stops. Miller pulled five Wolfpack flags to lead the team. Linebergcr, Parham and Samuel Cureton III each took four flags. Willie Ashford IV also played well defensive, with three stops. Jimmy Richburg and Kenneth Mickens Jr. had one stop each. Coach Edward Blackburn attributed the win to his team's cohesiveness. "Our whole team played together again," he said. "It was a total team effort, including some great coaching. Walkertown played hard, but through grace we won." The Flag team was represent ed during Homecoming festivi ties by Marcus Bucknor, who was named the 1998 Vikings Flag King. Tiny Vikings' Mighty-Mites battle back to force 13-13 tie with Walkertown The Tiny Vikings Mighty Mites fought back from a 13-0 deficit at the end of the third quarter to tie the Walkertown Wolfpack 13-13. Donte' Mack, the Vikings' quarterback accounted for both touchdowns. Mack threw a pass to Joshua Brown to get his team on the scoreboard, then added the second touchdown. Brown added the conversion run that tied the game. Coach Mike Gray praised his team for not giving up in spite of having three scoreless quarters. "This was a true display of determination, team work and will power," Gray said. Vikings' Pee Wees roll to 34-0 win behind play of Tatum, Smith Williams Tatum got the Tiny Vikings off to a quick start with a 13-yard scoring pass and Demario Smith added two touch downs and a safety on defense to lead the Vikings' Pee Wees. Smith's first score came on a 43-yard run. He then sacked the Wolfpack quarterback to add two points on a safety. Smith then broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run for the Vikings. Devin Anthony added a 32-yard run for the next touchdown and James Samuels rounded out the scoring for the final touchdown on a 60-yard run. Chris Plater added extra point for the final Viking point.
