Grant, district recreation supervisor for the City of Win ston-Salem and former assistant basketball coach at Winston Salem, liked the idea from the start. Grayson, who works in com munity development with the Charlotte Hornets, told Grant about the 3 For All basketball skills competition. The competi tion, sponsored by Nike and Lady Foot Locker, gives girls aged 10 17 and opportunity to test their skills against each other in three different drills. ,"He asked me if we would be interested in doing this and it sort of snowballed from there," said Grant, who was subsequently named the site manager for the local competition which will be held on Jan. 22 at Hahes Hosiery Recreation Center. "I saw it as a unique opportunity for young ladies. With the attention of women's athletics and women in sports today, I saw this as a good chance for us to do something positive with our young ladies." This is the fourth year that the competition has been held. Las year more than 10,000 girls partic ipated in 3 For All across the country in 12 different cities. This year three new cities (Orlando, Charlotte and Houston) have been added to that total. The competition at Hanes Hosiery is part of the preliminary competi tions for the Charlotte site. Partic ipants will compete in three differ ent age divisions (10-12, 13-14 and 15-17). The format for the compe tition includes the Super, Shot - a timed shooting event with several selected spots on the court. Speed Dribble - a timed dribbling event, * and Free Throws - 15 free throws. The winners, individuals in each of the three competitions and overall winners, from Winston Salem will advance to Charlotte, where they will go against winners from nine other cites in the Car olinas. <? "Our staff is really excited about it," Grant said. "We have a lot of prizes a id awards. Lady Foot Locker and other companies have given us enough prizes that no one who participates in the competition will go home empty handed."
