Demons9 junior varsity gets four wins, improve record to 15-0 < By SAM DAVIS THE CmoNiciE ? | Reynolds' junior varsity bas ketball team continued to roll, taking victories over East Surry, South Rowan, West Forsyth and Mount Tabor to improved its (dfcord to 15-0. The Demons Demons used iheir stingy defense to hold down (he opposition in each of their frins. RJR took a .69-36 victory over Mount Tabor, holding the Spartans to only 10 first-half points. J RJR's balanced offensive fttack was led by Mike Russell, who scored a team-high 12 points. Andre Reid added 10 points, Brandon Senter scored (line and Teddy Petree added fight. It was one of the team's lowest scoring games, but they also shut down Mount Tabor to its season low in scoring. ; Reynolds took a 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Demons stretched their margin to 31-10 at the end of the first half ind continued to roll in the sec ond half. ; Coach Kevin King said his team's offense was slowed down by Mount Tabor's defense, but it also put together a strong defen sive game plan. "Mount Tabor slowed the game down with its half-court trap," King said. "But our half court defense was good, especial ly on the ball. The next battle was against South Rowan in China Grove. The Demons jumped out to a 30 15 win at the end of the first quarter. RJR had four different players who hit 3-pointers in the first quarter to take its early lead as it took a 98-44 win. The Demons had a total of 11 3 pointers in the game. Brandon Mitchell scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Derrele Mitchell knocked down two 3-pointers and added 15 points. Andre Reid also had two 3-pointers and scored 16 points. "Corey Baker scored 13 points and Maurice Evans had eight points ttpd grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to lead the Demons in (hat category. King said the Raiders' zone defense forced the Demons to shoot from the outside and (hat tvas the reason they shot so many three-pointers. Reynolds improved to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win. South Rowan fell to 9-4 and 2-1 in the Central Pied mont 4-A Conference. Reynolds hit the 90-point mark against East Surry, roaring to a 90-21 victory over East Surry. The Demons had nine players score in the first quarter, led by 10 points in the period by Mitchell, as they took a commanding 30-5 lead.- , "RJR continued its rout in the second quarter by outscoring East Surry 31 -6 for a 61 -11 lead at the half. The highlight of the game came when Mitchell stole the ball and threw down a two handed dunk. Evans picked up from there, following with a steal and a two-handed dunk to excite the crowd and his teammates. While the offensive fireworks" perked up the team, the Demons' defense was what drew King's praise. Reynolds limited East Surry to only eight field goals in the game. Mitchell scored a team-hi|h 21 points to lead the Demons: Petree followed with 12 points, Matt Green^^ored 10 points and Evans addec^ro* The Demons earned their 15th consecutive win of the season when they took a 68-54 win over West Forsyth. Derrele Mitchell got the Demons out of the gate quickly when he scored eight first-quarter points. Mjtchell had two 3-pointers and a dunk in the first quarter as Reynolds took a 2,1-11 lead. Maurice Evans had seven points in the second quarter as Reynolds increased its lead to 38-22. The Demons put the game way in the third quarter when, they outscored the Titans 15-10 for a 53-32 advantage. West ral lied in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough for the Titans to climb out of the hole they had made for themselves. Mitchell led the way for the Demons with 15 points, Evans scored 13 and Petree added 11. Reynolds made only 15 of 37 free throws and West closed the gap for the final margin. m . ? Derrefe Mitchell Williford, Squire lead Terps past Hoyas in Hanes Hosiery 16-1$ Hoops League Special to The Chronicle ' ; "Shaun Williford scored 23 points and John Squire scored 21 points to help the Terps defeat the Hoyas and improve to 1-1 on the season in the 16-18 division in Hanes * Hosiery's basketball league. ? Williford's leadership and passing skills showed why he is Considered one of the top guards in the league. The Terps jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, holding the Hoyas to only 32 percent shooting from the field in the second half as they rolled to victory. Willie Damon turned in an outstanding individual effort for the Hoyas, pouring in 17 points in a losing effort. Donnie Allen and Monte O'Neal scored nine each to back Damon for the Hoyas, who played hard in the second half and making the final score respectable. Wildcats 48 Bruins 32 Brian Johnson and Jermaine Carson scored nine points each and the Wildcats' team play helped them to overcome a late J ruins run as they improved to 2 on the season. The Bruins fought back to make a game of it behind the play of Anthony Scott who scored a game-high 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to cut the gap to six points with eight min utes left. But Johnson and Carson helped spark the Wildcats, who stopped the Bruins run. Scott Stewart and Tory Conrad scored eight points each for the Wildcats to support the winning effort. Hane Hosiery 13-15 League Jarrett Crompton scored 22 points and teammate Antwoine Hairston chipped in with 10 to lead the Bulls to a 50-30 victory over the Sonics. Both teams showcased good team play on the offensive and defensive ends o the court. But Crompton put on an indi vidual offensive show for the ? Bulls in the final minutes of the game, hitting five points in a row to push his team to itsTinal mar gin. Terry Law and Marcus Bowles added six points each and Jay Lavene poured pumped in It) points to lead the Bulls to their second win of the season. Greg Glenn scored a game high 23 points to lead the Sonics and Ben Scott added five. Knicks 45 76ers 40 Brian Johnson scored a key basket and added two crucial Free throws to help the Knicks earn their second victory over the 76ers. Johnson, who led his team with 23 points and six rebouffds, helped ice the game with his clutch shooting in the final min utes. Wayne Crowell scored eight points and Craig Amos and Kar son Gcddings added four points each to back Johnson. The 76ers. who fell to 0-2. were led by Reginald Price and Chris Thomas who combined for 28 of the 76ers' 40 points. Warriors 45 Timberwolves 34 - ifc , Mario Hawkins poured in 19 points to lead a weU-balanced team effort as the Warriors took a victory. \ The Timberwolves jumped out to an early lead behind the shooting of Robert Washington but. fell behind in the second half and never recovered. Washington led the Timber wolves with 12 points, John Watts added eight and Sean Lampkins added six. Chris Archie scored 10 and Joseph Brewer added nine points and four steals to support Hawkins. Jazz 43 Lakers 35 Robert Johnson scored 13 points and David Smith added 10 to help push the Jazz's record to 2-0 with a victory over the Lak ers. Duke Quick scored six of his 11 points in the last eight minutes to help the Jazz maintain their lead. Ronald Mumford scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Lakers, who fought back to cut the margin to two points in the final three minutes of the game. However. Smith hit "two free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Delwann Singletary and Robert Bortins scored four points each for the Lakers.
