know his way around the CIAA.
He played for- North Carolina
Central during the early 1970s and
was an Ail-CIAA pick.
"I think I could possibly be
better thpn my father." Davis said.
"I'm sure he would love for me to
be on the All-CIAA team."
But in order to do so the slen
der forward/center says she will
have to improve on her 4.1 scoring
average and 4.9 rebounding aver
age.
Davis plans to work intensely
at St. Paul's over the summer on
ball handling and becoming more
consistent on offense and on the
boards while improving in the area
of defense.
'The only way I can improve is
to push myself," Davis said.
She also says the Lady Tigers
can all find some areas to get bet
ter in to improve on their 6-20
record.
"We need to all improve,"
Davis said. "We need a a lot of
attitude adjustments and we just
need to work hard."
The hardest aspect of college
basketball for Davis hasn't been
the playing intensity as much as
learning her coaches system.
John Hill, the former assistant
at Winston-Salem State University
took over the Lady Tigers reins in
the middle of this season but Davis
continued to learn in practice and
give her all on the court,
i ? "I always give my team effort,"
she said. "Whether it's 10 seconds
or 10 minutes, I go hard."
Davis brought that type of
work ethic with her from North
Forsyth High School.
Though she didn't start to play
basketball until ninth grade she
quickly learned the game. Her
father never pushed the game on
her at a young age but has been by
her side ever since giving her
advice and encouraging her along
the way.
This has only helped her while
adjusting to college basketball at
St. Paul s College. /
Davis says she has missed
being away from her family and
friends but has learned to adapt to
the new surroundings.
"It was rough my freshman
year but it's gotten better," she
said. "The people at St. Pauls are
nice. Even though it's a small town,
it's a good place to get an educa
tion."
Davis also believes it's a good
place to get a CIAA tournament
title.

The move to Raleigh for the
next three years is a big step up
for the league. The arena seats
some 23,000 fans for basketball.
Of that total, 14,000 are in the
lower arena. In Winston-Salem,
only 6,000 seats are in the lower
arena in the 14,500-seat Joel Col
iseum.
"Raleigh is a totally different
venue," he says. "It offers us
another set of challenges. We're
already feeling the effects of it.
WRAL is covering this year's
tournament live."
* Kerry says there is some nos
talgia involved with the confer*
ence and Winston-Salem. How
ever, the GIAA has to be objec
tive in its business approach.
"This is a job (as commission
er) and this is a business," he says.
We're learning a lot of things
about ourselves and the things
we need to do. Sometimes change
is good because it stirs up excite
ment.
