Men's Recap from page 4 VUU,?which improved to 23-5 with its three tourna ment wins, had been dealt a 100-97 loss by the Gold en Bulls in Charlotte just two weeks prior to the start of the tournament. VUU's tournament championship Was its third since 1990, including 1992 when the Panthbrs ' defeated Smith 66-63 in the championship game. ! In that season, the Pan thers captured the second of their two Division II national championships. Newbie, a 6-7 senior forward from Washington, D.C., scored 93 points in the toufnament and was named its Most Valuable Player. William Davis, a freshman guard from Wilmington, Del., was named to the Afl-Tourna ment Team after scoring 91 points in three games. Both had 22 in the cham pionship game. Against J.C. Smith, Newbie had 12 points in the first half when Vir ginia Union jumped out to a 44-28 lead. In the second half it was Davis, who led the way. Davis got a hot hand from outside, making three 3-pointers to help his team extend its lead to 54 35 with 15:04 to play in tlje game. Smith could get no closer the rest of the way. "I think we played one of our better games," Newbie^aid. "We came out and played h^rd and everything else fell into place." Chandar Bingham also turned in a strong perfor mance. The 6-9 sopho more center scored 13 points and grabbed a A ? ' game-high 12 rebounds for the Panthers. A1 Mob ley, a 6-8 forward, and Mike Martin, a reserve guard, also reached double figures. Mobley scored 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and had four assists. Martin came off the bench to hit three of three 3-pointers for 13 points in only 15 minutes of action. "Anytime you see us win it's because of defense," Robbins said. We like to have our games in the 60's or 70's. With the rest of the league's top teams strug gling, VUU's road to the championship was cleared by the efforts of underdog teams. St. Augustine's, the other No. 1 seed, was knocked off by Winston Salem State in the quarter final round. Both No. 2 seeds, Elizabeth City and v V North Carolina Central, were knocked off in their first game (quarterfinals) after opening-rourid byes. That left only Union among the four teams receiving byes in the first round. Livingstone College was the Cinderella story of the men's tournament. The Blue Bears, who had never won a tournament game in their 37-year CIAA affilia tion, pulled off two upsets to get to the semifinals. ' Livingstone defeated St. Paul's in the opening round and North Carolina Central in the quarterfinals to earn a date against VUU in the semifinals. But Davis of VUU shot a hole/in the Blue Bears' glass slipper with 24 points and Cinderella was sent home with a 75 62 defeat. Davis had 20 of his points in the second half after notching only four in the first half. "Coach (Robbins) told me that he was going to take me out of the game if I didn't shoot, and I didn't want to come out of the game," he said.
