Squire, Damon lead Hanes Hosiery to championship in 19-and-Under Shootout Special to The Chronicle ? ; John Squire poured in 16 points and Willie Damon added 15 to lead the Hanes Hosiery 19 and-under All-Stars to a 49-41 victory over the Boys Club (Wis tologist AAU) in the champi onship game of the 2nd Annual Shootout Tournament last week at Hanes Hosiery Gym. The game was close for most of the way. The Boys Club led by a 22-21 score at the half. Devin Williams and Derrick Stephens led the scoring for the Boys Club as it took its halftime lead. It also got good inside play from Jamal Taylor and Jamal Jeter, who led the team in rebounding. j .?. | ' In the second half, the Hosiery took control of the game. Kennard Plummer, Jamar Peterkin and Jevon Smith led a rally in the second half that put Hanes Hosiery on top. Hanes Hosiery employed a stiffling pressure defensive attack that helped jumpstart its offense. The Hosiery also used a man-to man defense to smother the Boys Club. Squire, Damon and Ced Hair ston controlled the backboards on both ends of the court as the Hosiery slowly wore down the Boys Club. Squire connected on a 3 pointer with three minutes left in the game to give the Hosiery a six-point lead and held on from there. The Hosiery used solid defen sive pressure down the stretch to hold off the Boys Club. The Hosiery then connected on all of its free throws in the closing min utes to hold on for the victory. Stephens led the Boys Club with 17 points. Devin Williams and Antonio Thomas added six points each. Squire was named tournament MVP. The Hosiery advanced to the championship game by defeating Miller Park 54-47. The Boys Club defeated Hancs Hosiery's 17-and-Under team 57-38 to move into the championship game. The stealers opened the'tour nament with a 40-30 victory over the Carolina Tigers, from Ashe boro. Katheryn Lyons led the Stealers wkh 18 points and LaShauda Pratt-added 10 points. The Stealers led 29-25 with four minutes to go before connecting I . on nine of 11 free throws to extend their lead. Casey Jones of the Stealers hit- two clutch free throws in the final minutes to help preserve the win. The Carolina Express, from Hickory, gave the Stealers a scare in the semifinals. The Stealers trailed by five points in the third quarter before rallying for the victory. The Stealers trailed 17-12 when they went on an 18-11 run to take the lead with a minute left in the game. Brittany Strachan hit two free throws to seal the victory for the Stealers. Pratt carried.the bulk of the offensive load, scoring 22 points, including 16 in the second half. Katrice Teal added seven? points for the Stealers. In the championship game, the Stealers pulled away late after a shaky start foi^a 28-20 victory. Pratt and Casey Jones provided the spark with five steals and eight points to extend a 19-15 lead to 27-15. The Stealers went, Into a delay game to hold off the Wake Forest Sting for the title.
