Carver/Winston Lake basketball
camp emphasizes 'keeping it real'
By THERESA DAVIS
For The CHRONICLE
"Keeping it real" was the
theme that Coach Ricky Holt used
for his Second Annual
Carver/Winston Lake Basketball
Camp, which was held last week
(May 31-June 4) at the Winston
Lake YMCA.
Holt. Carver's head basketball
coach, said he likes to use the
camp to help kids get,a realistic
picture of what it takes to compete
on the high school level and
beyond in sports. Camp partici
pants were put through an assort
ment of basketball drills each
morning before squaring off in
games against each other in the
afternoon. In addition, several
speakers came in throughout the
week and spoke candidly with the
campers about their experiences.
"We had over 40 kids this yelar
and that was an improvement from
the first year," Holt said. "We got a
chance to work with* the kids on
drills to improve themselves on the
basketball court as well as in the
classroom and in the community.
We brought in.different speakers
who could relate to the kids, and I
think they really enjoyed that."
One of the camp's speakers
was Delaney Rudd, a former bas
ketball player at Wake Forest and
in the NBA with the Utah Jazz.
Rudd talked to the kids about life
experiences and setting goals.
"You have to set goals and
work towarcl them every day,"
Rudd said. "It's not enough to just
think about what you Want to do
in life, but you have to go after it.
The reason some people fail in life
is because they don't have a plan to
succeed*"
Another speaker who held the
attention of the campers was
Alfred Poe. former head basketball
coach and current athletic director
at Carver. Poe emphasized the
importance of following instruc
tion and doing well in academics.
"You can't get to college unless
you take the time to do your
school work," he said. "Really, that
should come before basketball at
this point in your lives."
The campers ranged in age
from 5-15. The staff provided
activities throughout the day and
gave away awards and certificates
to the campers.
Holt said he and the YMCA
camp worked well together to
make the camp run smoothly.
"We really enjoy having the
camp at the Winston Lake Y," he
said. "It is a nice facility and it
helps to have air conditioning.
Also, the staff is very supportive.
William Misenheimer does an
excellent job in helping to assem
ble the camp and the new executive
director, Larry Horsley, extended
the services of the Y to m<^ke the
camp successful. Not ortly is the
camp growing, but it's getting bet
ter with more activities and sup
port. I thought the counselors did
an outstanding job with the kids
this year, and its something we
hope to continue."

Golf-N-Around
from pa%e B3
were not firm and fast enough
because of the hot summers. The
greens were renovated in 1997
with a new bentgrass that allows
minimum watering at this time
of the year. The legacy of Don
ald Ross awaits this year's- field.
The greens and the surrounding
areas offer some challenges for
the pros. It would be great if
Tiger Woods was to win his sec

state. Look for Tiger to be
putting/chipping with his 3
wood.
Tickets for the Open have
been sold out since last year.
The tournament will be televised
Thursday through Sunday on
NBC or ESPN.
The 1999 National Black
