Congress for her work as a spy, nurse and scout for the
Union Army during the Civil War.
Aug. 1, 1805 - The African Baptist Church is organized
in Boston, Mass.
Aug. 11, 1965 - Rioting begins in the Watts section of Los
Angeles. After six days of unrest, the death toll will stand
at 34. The riots decimated the area, causing more than
$35 million in damages to homes and businesses.
