Taylor said his team's offensive
explosiveness was the key.
"We have three kids back there
who can go the distance anytime
they touch the football," Taylor
said. "When our line opens holes
for them we're going to have a
play. Today they did that."
After scoring on its first pos
session, the Yellowjackets
increased their lead to 16-0 with
5:58 to play in the first half.
Williams scored from 11 yards out
on an option and Anthony added
the extra point.
Carver increased its lead to 22
0 on Anthony's interception
return with 4:14 to play in the
third quarter. Parkland answered
with a touchdown to close the gap
to 22-8. Tamont Williams hauled
in a 77-yard reception from
Rashawn Jordan on a halfback
option pass. Abraham Watson
added the two-point conversion.
Parkland sealed the win when
Williams sneaked in from two
yards out. The touchdown was set
up by a bad I
snap on a Park
land punt
attempt. Carv
er added its
final touch
down on
Charles Rus
sell's 85-yard
run with 1:02
left in the
game.
Although
the Yellowjack
ets had one of
their better
offensive show
ings of the sea
son, Taylor
said the team's
strength is its
defense.
"The defense has been the
team's strong suit," Taylor said.
"They shut out North and
Reynolds early in the season and
they've played well lately. The
biggest thing we've been trying to
overcome is our youth: We have a
lot of big kids, but most of them
have never played football before.

time they've stepped on the foot

The Yellowjackets are idle this
week and will get back down to
business when they play Greens
boro Smith next Thursday.

Caldwell attributes much of his
team's suqcess to its new-found
running attack and the play of
Sankey, a fifth-year senior who
spent most of his first four seasons
in the program as a reserve.
Because of Sankey's versatility
Caldwell has gone to an offensive
attack built around the option.
"That's something we had been
missing over the years," Caldwell
said, referring to his team's run
ning game. "We've been in situa
tions where we needed to have to
run (the ball) to eat up the clock."
With quarterback Matt Kuk
lick behind center the past four
seasons the Deacons had the pro
totype dropback quarterback but
lacked much when it came to run
ning the football - particularly the
option attack. Sankey had moder
ate success as Kuklick's backup,
but has emerged as a standout in
the new scheme with emphasis on
running the ball.
"Ben is really making progress
and getting a good feel for the sys
tem," Caldwell said. "He's a guy
who hasn't gotten many snaps
before this season and we really
didn't know what he was capable
of doing. But he's smart and he
makes yOu look good as a coach. I
think he's going to be really good
when he gets a feel for what we're
, doing."
Although Rutgers came into
the game with a defense ranked
No. 96 in Division I-A, Wake For
est wasn't unable to run roughshod
over them in the game's opening
minutes.
"Rutgers gave us problems,"
Caldwell said. "But I'm not com
plaining because we won the
game."
Kane, another fifth-year senior,
also had another outstanding
game. Kane finished with 120
yards on 34 carries.
"He's a guy who can do a lot of
things for us," Caldwell said. ."He
gave us real quality play and
showed a lot of individual leader
ship."
The Deacons will need to get
good play from Kane and Sankey
if they expect to upset Maryland
on Saturday, when the teams
square off in an ACC battle at
Groves Stadium.
"We have to get better against a
Maryland team that has really
been playing well," Caldwell said.

Jason Brayboy, Lashun Peoples
and T.J. Gregg played well for
Carver offensively. Peoples had
another sterling performance, giv
ing the Yellowjackets more than
200 all-purpose yardage, including
a 68-yard touchdown reception
from Brayboy. Gregg rushed for 94
yards and Brayboy was five of 11
for 137 yards. ?
"The thing for us right now (is
that) Lashun has to do so much for
us," Wilkes said. "Last year we had
four guys in the backfield who
could go the distance at any time.
This year we don't have as many
weapons. We need some guys to
step up and play better. We've got
to get a couple more running
backs to step up. We have other
good running backs, but they
haven't produced the way we need
them to produce."
Carver, which is 5-2 overall and
2-0 in the conference, takes this
week off before getting back into
conference play next week. Wilkes
said the Yellowjackets need to
come back focused and ready to
take their games to another level.
"We're still not playing up to
par," Wilkes said. "We look for
perfection and we want to play as
close to that as possible. Right now
we're getting better. We want to be
peaking around the end of the sea
son."
Wilkes was recently named the
Carolina Panthers' High School
Coach of the Month. Wilkes and a
guest will travel to Charlotte next
Sunday for the Panthers' game
against the New Orleans Saints.
He will be honored at halftime and
receive a plaque from the Panthers.
"It's a great honor and I'm
proud that I can represent Forsyth
County," Wilkes said. "I'm grate
ful to all the people who have
helped contribute to my success at
Carver High School."
