' RELIGION/OBITUARY ?? (?U?1946 724-1561 i ?' MNPOM Dr. Maggie Earl Friday Benson, daughter of the late Earl and Minnie Speaks Friday, passed away recently at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of the city and was educated in the public school systems of Elizabeth City, New Jersey and Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Winston Salem Teachers College, N.C. A&T and did further study at the University of North Carolina. Benson taught school in the states of Virginia and I Greensboro. She was also proprietor of the Mother and Daughter Kinder garten and was chairman of the board of directors at Benson's Music Stu dio and F & B Travel Consultants. Benson was employed as a former reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel "Activities of Col ored People." At Zion Tabernacle FBH Church, she served as Minister of A Music. She also served as pianist for 60 years with the Victory Prayer Band Singers, who performed throughout the United States and abroad. Benson was a former member of the board of directors at Teamers Educational Institute in Charlotte: Surviving are her husband, Samuel Setzer Benson; two daughters, Vir Nessa D. and Minnie E. Benson; a devoted cousin-in-law, Florence Ceasar Rice; a devoted nephew, Carl Miller, Jr.; a devoted cousin, Eula B. Colter and family; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Benson of the city and Catherine Wash ington and Virginia Welsh of Philadelphia, Pa.; foster son, Dr. H.W. Park er, six foster grandchildren; nieces, nephews; cousins and other relatives. , The funeral was held Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. from the Zion Tabernacle FBH Church., Reverend L.V. Davis officiated. Interment followed in the Ever green Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. *" % 1 ? - . COOPER Mr. James Robert Cooper, 3010 N. Claremont Avenue, died Oct. 12 at his residence. Mr. Richard Lindbergh Watts, 2800 North Patterson Ave., Winston Salem, died Oct. 11 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home He was a native of Roanoke Va., bom on Sept. 28, 1928, the son of Nancy Floyd and Houston Watts. He was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1947. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he was president of the Usher Board, a member of the Tuesday Morning Biblical Study, a member of the BTU and was a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Watts was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wyers Watts of the home; eight daughters, Gail Moore, Peggy (Donald) Clark, Jacqueline (Theodore) Shannon, Gwendolyn Withers, Jeanette (George) Hatcher, Linda Watts, all of Winston-Salem, Annette (Nemar) Anderson and Elaine (James) Eller, both of Richmond; four sons, Richard Lee Davis, Terry (Debra) Myers, Richard Lee Watts Jr. and Victor (Tangela) Watts, all of Winston-Salem; 25 grandchildren; devoted granddaughters, Kendra Watts of Baltimore, Md., and Uvonkia and Candace Eller of Richmond. Va.; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorraine Jackson, Elois (Harry) Smith, Laura Watts, Dorothy (Alfonze) Willis; brothers, Joseph Watts, Robert (Gwyndolyn) Watts; sisters in-law, Mary James, Shirley Conrad and Gloria (Jerry) George; brother-in law, Walter (Judy) Myers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends The funeral was held Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church. Dr. Jerry Drayton officiated. Burial followed at the family plot of Evergreen Cemetery.
