Sunday
School Lesson
Lesson Scripture: Deuteronomy
6:1-9,20-24
Lesson Aims: To understand how
God demonstrates His Love, to
become aware of our true demon
stration of love and to commit to
faithful obedient living.
Background: Forty years passed.
The rebellious adult population died
off with the exception of Moses,
Caleb and Joshua. The new genera
tion stood on the east bank of the
Jordon River ready to enter Canaan.
Moses taught this new generation
the greatness of the law. Chapter 4
recorded his impassioned plea for
allegiance (Roberts Complete Bible
Handbook). In chapter 5, he restat
ed the Ten Commandments given
first at Mt. Horeb (Sinai). Those
laws were the foundation for living in
community. (The initial part of the
commandment establishes relation
ship with God and the second, our
relationship with each other),
Moses pointed out that to be
God's people and to become a holy
community, they must be obedient.
People of the new generation were
not old enough, if they were born to
comprehend the events at the moun
tain. Very passionately, Moses
taught them of God's Love and His
care for them. He urged them to lis
ten to God's Word (The Command
ments), to learn it and practice it so
that prosperity and a prolonged life
are given.
Lesson: Chapter 6 opens as
Moses continues to exhort the peo
ple on living in community. Verses 1
3 remind them that law comes from
God, not Moses. He points out that
they are to fear God. This fear is
having reverence for God, not being
afraid of Him. If they are obedient,
God will fulfill the ptomise made to
them.
Moses further states that obedi
ence is done based of the love that
they have for God, not due to the
blessings. There is but one God; He
is Lord over all creation. Moses dri
ves home the concept that God's
love deserves obedience from us and
the future generation. That response
is to be wholehearted.
Moses encourages them to teach
the children. This teaching is to be
formal/informal with diligent
patience. God's Word is to be seen in
the home and the life of His people
as a testimony to Him. The outward
sign of God is displayed as a phylac
tery (a small box containing scrip
ture) on the forehead or arm and as
a mezuza (small box of scripture on
the door post).
Moses then goes back to teach
ing the children. The children of
Israel are to teach the children their
heritage. For the children to under
stand the importance of obedience
to God and love for their neighbors,
they must go back. Giving back is an
indication that you know your iden
tity (heritage) and your deliverer. For
the generations to come, they must
be taught to love God and why. For
as long as they do good (love and
obedience), God will preserve each
and every one of them. That "was"
and "is" His promise to His people.
Application: Love is very often
one of the difficult concepts of life to
master. For our purpose today, we
are centering on agape love. This is
, never-ending love that God has for
us. This love is guiding, encouraging
and supportive. At times it must be
punishing as well. For those of us
who are parents, we understand this;
our children don't (they will in the
future).
Forty years ago the children of
? m
Israel were freed from bondage; they
complained- They were fed from
heaven, given laws to change their
thinking, had a visible sign of God's
presence and still they complained.
When faced with the fulfillment of
the promiser, they became scared
and doubted. God punished them.
Even though they disappointed God
and He dealt with them harshly. He
never left them. That's love, I tell
you. It's love when parents hang in
there with disobedient children. Our
love deepens when we realize the var
ious faces of love.
Because of God's love, a
response from us is necessary also. It
isn't in a building, an outfit or a few
melodious words. Our response is
our love for our fellow human beings
and our obedience to Him. Our
response is in building community.
We too have been enslaved to sin.
When delivered, we must change our
way of thinking. God is there for us
Why worship Him? Who else could
have done what God did?-No one!
God expects/requires us to pass
the legacy down to each new genera
tion. We're standing on the threshold
of a new millennium (east of Jor
dan); we are being reminded of
God's role in our history (individual
and collective) by our preachers. We
must pass the legacy down to the
next generation. Our children and
their children must. know where
we've come from. If they know their
history, their faith has fertile ground
to grow in.
With all of the pretty words, the
flowing phrases, the big Bibles, it all
boils down to our daily living. Our
obedience to His word is the best
way to show our love for Him. If we
can get real with God, then we can
learn to live in community.
As we accept His demonstration
of love for us, we are then able to
show that love to our fellow brothers
and sisters. If each one teaches one
based on God's love, the holy com
munity will be reality. God will be
pleased.
