Creative clothing makes the grade with kids (NAPS!) - Parents spend an average of $400 on new clothes for their kids each fall and winter, yet most kids still put together their own idea of what looks cool to wear. In fact, a new survey conducted by Cheer laundry detergent found that when it comes to deciding what to wear, kids make the call about half of the time. If you find yourself washing the . same plaid pants to go with the funky polka dot shirt every day, have no fear. Parenting expert and author Carol Weston says parents should encourage children's creative sense of style and individuality through their clothing, as long as it's appropriate for the weather. "I always remind parents when shopping for kids' clothes that if they don't like it, they're not going to wear it - that's the bottom line. As long as kids are dressed for the weather and in accordance with any dress codes their school may have, I recommend letting them choose their own clothing as much as possible," said Weston. "The best you can do is make sure it looks as good as possible. You don't want that favorite outfit to start to look worn." ? That's why Weston recommends using the latest in laundry technology - new Cheer with Liquifiber - to help keep kids' clothes looking great throughout the year. Cheer with Liquifiber is the first and only detergent that actually helps prevent the cotton fabric wear that happens to clothes in the wash, so they look healthy and vibrant. "Simply washing your clothes in new Cheer can actually help clothes retain their newness, so you may even end up replacing those favorite outfits less often - helping you save money in the long run," said Weston. Contest Celebrates Creative Clothes Kids have some creative favorite outfits. The recent "Kids Wear the Damdest Things" contest sponsored by Cheer found that kids' favorite frocks often feature vivid colors, wild patterns and retro touches like tie-dye and smiley faces. "The contest entries really illustrate what goes on daily in households across the country. Kids love to wear every imaginable clothing combination - a tie dye T-shirt with plaid shorts; red, white and blue American flag print from head-to-toe; colorful scarves, socks and shoes," said Weston. "My advice is don't fight it - if Johnny wants to wear a cape to make him feel more powerful, let him. He won't still be wearing the cape when he heads off to col tege" After scouring the coun try for kids' favorite outfits, 10 finalists flew to Las Vegas to model their darndest out fits in a special fashion show where Madeleine Foley from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, was crowned the winner. Her cre ative sense of style won her a $10,000 savings bond, a starring role in a national cheer ad and a year's supply of Cheer. According to panel judge Jeff Keyser, brand manager for Cheer, it was Madeleine's passion for colorful fashion that set her apart. "Madeline's entry really showcased her creativity and artistic personality," said Keyser. "We liked the way she combined all of the vivid colors she loves - in her outfit and in her painting." And how does Madeleine feel about being named the winner? "She's absolutely stunned - we've never entered a contest before," said Madeleine's mother, Barbara Bangert, who sent in her winning entry. "Madeleine has always loved clothes, even as a small child. She has very strong feelings about her clothes and is not a conventional dresser. She's gone through many fashion trends and is cur rently into layering." What Happens When Favorites are Washed Again and Again The simple act of washing takes its toll on clothes. During a normal wash cycle, the wet clothing fibers rub against each other while the clothing is agitated in the machine. This constant rubbing of the wet fibers can cause them to break away from the surface of the threads and wear, resulting in fuzzing and fading. "Considering that Americans do about 400 loads of laundry a year - more than seven loads a week - it's not surprising that clothing can look worn and dull before it should," said Keyser. Cheer with l.iqiiifiber Prevents Wear Cheer's new technology, Liquiflber, works at the very core of the fabric - the fiber. Liquiflber is a cellulose polymer, similar in structure to a cotton fiber. During the wash cycle, Liquiflber dis perses throughout the water and actual ly interweaves between the fabric's fibers, reducing the fiber's tendency to break away from the surface of the threads. This helps to prevent the wear that causes fuzzing and fading. Cheer with Liquiflber is currently available on store shelves nationwide. The product is available in the powder versions of regular Cheer, Cheer With Bleach and CheerFree, in a variety of sizes. Tips To Keep Kids Looking Iheir Best ? Talk before you shop. Before you head to the store to pick out clothes, sit down with your child and plan what you intend to buy. Be clear about the boundaries but allow kids to make their own decisions. Listen and understand their goals so you can help if they ask for your advice. Discussion, beforehand helps avoid conflicts while shopping. ? Allow kids to make their own choices. Kids appreciate being part of the decision-making process. For exam ple, when picking out clothing for school, ask, "Do you want to wear plain tights or flowered tights with your skirt?" and offer choices. If kids have a hand in what they wear, they feel more self-assured and confi dent. They will also be more likely to cooperate when getting ready for school in the morning. ? Encourage individuali ty. For kids, an important part of building self-esteem is expressing their individu ality. Parents should acknowledge kids' unique ness by complimenting the way they express themselves through clothing choices. Tell kids they look great - it will help them feel confi dent. ? Use the latest laundry technology. The laundry detergent you choose can make a difference in the way your kids' clothes look - no matter what outfits they put together. New Cheer with Liquifiber has breakthrough technology that helps prevent cotton fabric wear before it starts, to help ensure that what you're washing over and over again stays looking great. ^1^^^ JSt/Zy <\JxL?Lnd.?L, Attorney At Law 548 N.
