Black college legend, Walter Payton, dies "SWEETNESS": The high-flying Payton was fourth in the 1974 Heisman Trophy voting, then the highest fin ish ever for a black college player. In his career at Jack son State, he set the school's career rushing mark and his 66 touchdowns and 464 points were NCAA records. He went on to put up a record 16,726 rushing yards in his 13-year NFL career. LUT WILLIAMS BCSP Editor Another black college giant has fallen. Less than three weeks after the death of legendary black college basketball coach John McLendon, for mer Jackson State running back Walter Payton, who set a standard of unmatched excellence both in college and in the NFL, died Monday outside Chicago from complications of a rare liver disease. He was 45. Payton, who retired from the NFL in 1987 after a record-setting 13-year career as the heart and soul of the Chicago Bears, began his ascent as a running back at Jackson State. It was there that he began the high stepping, hard-running style that would become his trademark. By the end of his college career, the Columbia, Miss., native was a Heisman Trophy final ist, the leading scorer in college football history and a first round NFL draft pick. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. In the NFL, his legend grew as his flair, will and determination led him to become the league's all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards. He surpassed the 1,000 yard rushing mark a record ten times and holds seven other NFL records. He was inducted into the league's Hall of Fame in 1993. "He was all class, on the field and off the field," said his former Bears coach, Mike Ditka, now bead coach of the New Orleans Saints. "And he had such a' respect for the game." NFL commissioner Paul TaglL' abue called Payton "one of the greatest players in the his tory of the sport. Walter was an inspiration in everything he did." In an interview last year, Payton's brother Eddie, i former NFL player and current head golf coach at Jack son State, talked about the running style that marked^ Walter's career and about the upbringing that framed hi* outlook on life. "We were both under the same tutelage," Eddie Pay-^ ton said. "They (coaches) taught us to attack, not receive* hits. You didn't go down easy, you went down hard. You delivered blows, you didn't accept them. That's the way we were taught. "We got the basic philosophy (of life) from our par ents. What was instilled in us is that there is one rule in athletics and in life. If you start, there's no quit until it's - over. We learned early ill life that we owed it to ourselves to try to be the best." Both on and off the field, Walter Payton demon strated that he took those lessons to heart. Payton is survived by his wife Connie, son Jarrett, who currently plays for the University of Miami and a, daughter, Brittney. ,.
