Top seed r FAA playoffs I I - I \ i ? Two from ME AC advance in l-AA playoffs - Top seeded and BCSP #1 Tennessee State, who came in averag ing 37 points and 43S yards of offense, had to rely on the legs of return man Avion Black for their only points as they fell to MEAC champion North Carolina A&T. 24-10 in the first round of the I AA playoffs. Back-up TSU QB Chris Perkins, who had ably replaced all-American Leon Murray since he went down in the Tigers seventh game, went out with a separated shoulder midway through the second quarter and his replacements, two unproven QBs, were completely ineffective as A&T shut them out in the sec ond half after a 10-10 halftime tie. Black had set up the Tigers fust score, a 39-yard Seth Goodowens field goal, with a 63 yard return of the opening kickoff and scored TSU's only touchdown of the game on a 97-yard second quarter kickoff return. A&T tied the score in the fust half on Darren Dawkins' 39-yard kick and a seven-yard scoring run by FB Adrian Parks. The Aggies took the lead for good in the third quarter on Marcos Bryson's 13-yard cir cus catch in the end zone and got their final score on a fourth quar ter blocked punt that they recovered in the end zone. Perkins returned late in the third quarter to lead the Tigers to the A&T one yard-line but they were unable to punch it in and missed a field goal. - MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. QB Jajuan Seider of Flori da A&M was in top form Saturday as he accounted for all of FAMU's points, throwing for three scores and running for three more, in the Rattlers 44-29 win over Appalachian State in a fust round l-AA playoff game. Seider completed 33 of 43 passes for 313 yards, hitting WR Cainon Lamb 10 times for. 118 yards and their first two scores (13 and 26 yards) and connecting another 10 times with Demetrius Bendross for 93 yards and his other scoring toss (29 yards). Seider also ran 30 times for 81 yards and had scoring runs of 7, 3 and the game-clincher from 13 yards out. After being down 34-15 opening the final quarter, ASU scored twice to narrow the gap to 34-29. But that's when Seider led a quick-strike, seven LUT WILLIAMS BCSP Editor For the first time since 1982, two black cojlege teams got wins in the first round of the NCAA Div. I-AA playoffs and will advance to the national quarterfi nals this Saturday. The top two teams in the Mid East ern Athletic Conference, conference champion North Carolina A&T (11-1) and runner-up Florida A&M (9-3), proved their mettle by going on the road and knocking off higher ranked opponents. The two will be on the road again this Saturday as each tries to become the first black college in the national semifi nals since FAMU and Jackson State were a part of the inaugural four-team field in 1978. FAMU went on the win that first title and no black college team has since made it back to the championship game. A&T, seeded 16th and last in the playoff field, went into Nashville Saturday and knocked off top seed and BCSP #1 Tennessee State 24-10 to earn their first ever playoff win and quarterfinal appear ance. The Aggies will travel to traditional I-AA power and four-time I-AA champion Youngstown State (10 2), a 30-27 winner over Montana, for a Saturday afternoon (1:05 p.m.) game. YSU is the ninth seed. In Boone, N. C., Florida A&M. the 13th seed, got their first road playoff win since that champi onship season as they upset fourth-seeded Southern Conference champ Appalachian J State. 44-29 and earn their second straight spot | in the quarterfinals. The Rattlers (9-3) will hit [ the road again as they travel to Alabama to J face fifth-seeded Troy State (11-1), who | defeated James Madison 27-7. Game time is ] tentatively set for 2 p.m. A&T is meeting Youngstown State | for the first time. YSU has a 13-game playoff J winning streak dating back to 1992 and won j championships in '91, '93, '94 and '97. Their last playoff loss was in 1992 in the national champi- 1 onship game to Marshall, 31-28. The Penguins are led on offense by QB Jeff Ryan (141-243, 2,045 yds., 14 TDs), RB Adrian Brown (253 car., 1,195 yds, 13 TDs) and WR Elliot Giles (55 rec., 1,112 yds., 7 TDs). Florida A&M has split two first round playoff games with Troy State in the last three years. FAMU defeated the Trojans 27-17 last season in Tallahassee and fell 29-25 at Troy State in 19%. Troy State leads the series 2-1. v QB Brock Nutter (138-239, 2,183 yds., 13 TDs) is the team's offensive leader while Mareno Philyaw (35 rec., 680 yds., 4 TDs) is his favorite target. Defensive lineman A1 Lucas is a Buck Buchanan Award finalist (top 1-AA defender) who doubles as a short yardage back. All Pro Photography HAYES: Fiirst time in l-AA quarters. BCSP Notes ? ?_ T Southern's 37-31 come-from-behind win over Grambling State at the Bayou Classic has set up a Southern-Jackson State rematch in the first annual SWAC championship game, Dec. 11 in Birmingham (Legion Field, 1:03 p.m.) with the winner taking on MEAC representative Hampton in the ninth McDonald's Her itage Bowl a week later. Southern knocked off JSU 26-14, Oct. 16 in Jackson, Ms. T Grambling State Athletic Director Robert Piper, diagnosed with cancer in February of last year, died last Tuesday at his home in Rustin, La. Piper was 58. T Delaware State fired head coach John McKenzie on Tuesday. Athletic Direc tor Bill Collick said though the team had improved from last year's 0-11 mark to a 4-7 finish this season, he felt the improvement wasn't enough. McKenzie, a for mer Jackson State quarterback, posted a 7-26 mark in three seasons. Fayetteville State has also announced that James Toon will not return as head football coach of the Broncos. ? Albany State wasted little time in naming a replacement for retiring head foot ball coach Hamp Smith. James "Mike" White, who had served this season as assistant head coach to Smith, has been with the Golden Rams as a player and coach since 1984, serving many years as the team's defensive coordinator.
