Goodwill to hold recognition services I SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Goodwill Baptist Church, in the Arcadia community of North Davidson County, will hold two Ministry of Helps Recognition Services to honor the various ministries inside the church. A service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16. Rev. Ter rance Evans of Upper Room Baptist Church in High Point will speak. On Friday, Dec. 17, Rev. Connie Robinson of Union' Baptist Church in Winston Salem will be the guest speaker. Both services will start at 7 p.m. Goodwill has grown mightily, by tjie grace of God, under the leadership of Rev. Philemon Samuels. Some of the other min istries started under Pastor Samuels' guidance since he became the pastor in 1990 include a Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Public Relations Committee, Daughters of Debo rah Women's Ministry, Mighty Men of Valour Men's Ministry, Wednesday morning and evening prayer services. Trans portation Ministry, along with leadership workshops, seminars and other conferences. Pastor Samuels' helpmate, Prophetess Gloria Samuels, serves as director of church min istries. Philemon and Gloria SamuolM I Effort Club celebrates 75th anniversary SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Effort Club of New Bethel Baptist Church celebrated the 75th anniversary of its founding and its third "Race Progress Promoters Program" at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the church. Mrs. Carol POe presided over the program and Mrs. Dollie Mack and the Communion Singers of the church furnished music for the pro gram. Mrs. Ann Hanes presented the club members. Mrs. Dorenda Lucas presented the clubs annual donation to the NAACP, Mrs. Daphne Johnson presented a special presentation to the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Mrs. Linda Davis made a presentation to the pastor. Dr. Jerry Drayton, for the church. Dr. Drayton made remarks and gave the benediction. The Effort Gub was organized Nov. 14,1924, and its first president, the late Mrs. Glennie Miller Hall, a local educator, served as club presi dent for over 60 years. The current club president is Mrs. Olivia Thompkins Until 1997 the club's annual cel ebration was held under the theme of "Race Progress Day," which brought to Winston-Salem the strongest black leaders in our nation. They consisted of educators, politicians, lecturers, ministers and individuals from other walks of life as annual speakers In 1997 the club changed its annual celebration to the theme of "Race Progress Promoters" which focused on honoring and informing the community of individuals in the community who arc and- who have done an outstanding job in promot ing race progress in the local com munity. Persons nominated for awards must have rendered service in the community, must have demonstrat ed concern for the welfare of all peo ple, must have spoken out on issues affecting poor people, be active in civic affairs and must have promoted race progress in the community. Ptersons who served as judges to select the current awardees were: Mr. Daniel Piggott, chief judge; and attorney Lisa J. Caldwell, Dr. Vir ginia K. Newell, attorney Annie Brown Kennedy and Dr. William H. Turner. The 1999 "Race Progress Pro moters Awardees" selected and hon ored were: employee community activist Nigel Alston, insurance owner activist Ms, Mose Belton Brown, church leader Mrs. Evelena Richardson, child support legal expert attorney Denise S. Hartsfield, human services activist Dr. Charlie B. Hauser, health and wellness direc tor Dr. Lawrence Hopkins, educator Dr. Althea Taylor Jones, musician actress-choreographer Ms Janice Price, and retired public health nurse volunteer Mrs. Ida Ruth Staple foote. Following the program the hon orees were entertained at a church reception. Live Nativity Pageant Dec. 20 & 21 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE First Baptist Church on Highland Avenue will present its 36th annual Out door Live Nativity Pageant on the church lawn Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 20 and 21, from 7 to 9 pm. The pageant features six scenes, with each group making two appear ances, Background music of carols sup port the pageant, with narration by Rev. Wendell Johnson, church pastor. TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC: ?a- i PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the City-County Utility Commission, a joint agency of the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, and the City of Winston-Salem have submitted a Site Study application to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) as required by 15 A-13B. 1618 of the North Carolina Administrative Code. The purpose of this submittal is to begin the process of seeking NCDENR permits to construct and operate the Hanes Mill Road Landfill expansion, a proposed municipal solid waste landfill facility (MSWLF) to be located west of the existing MSWLF. ?
