He's always been smart, but now he is adding another ele ment." Overby said the Demons played well together throughout the tournament. Dusty Harrison scored 7 points. Franklin Brown tallied 6, William Palmer and Christshon Hicks had 5 and Tony Tucker had 2. "Our chemistry was great," Overby said. Making the transition from a year ago took a lot of work, according to Byrom. "I put a lot of tiine into getting better on offense," Byrom said. "I spent a lot of time during the sum mer working on my shooting and handling the ball. I knew that I needed to work on being a better scorer this season, and my team mates have put a lot of trust and confidence in me. They've really helped me and we have worked together as a team." Likewise, Byrom said his team had to work much harder to cap ture the title this year. "We thought we could win it," he said. "Even though we lost a lot of good players, we all felt that if we worked together we could make it three in a row." Freshmen from ptiRe Bl the move took the Demons by surprise. "We had to do something to , get us going." Massie said. "We don't play a lot of man-toyman, but the kids responded to it very well.' "This was their first tourna ment on the high school level and I think they understand now what to expect.'.' John Hardy and Ross Pleban were the big guns for the Spartans. Hardy scored 16 points, and Ple ban scored 15. "Hardy was tremendous for us in the middle," Massie said. "He made a lot of inside shots and was even better from the free-throw line. He just really kept battling inside." Pleban also did a good job of assisting the Spartans' playmakers run the offense. "He's a great captain," Massie said. "He did a good job of run ning the team." - LIFT from pane BI the score at 54-54 and sending the game into overtime. The short-handed Jaguars kept it close for the first few minutes of overtime but ran out of steam. "I told my kids there was no reason for them to hang their heads," Davis said. "We only have 10 boys who are true ninth-graders and for us to go up against a 4-A pro gram like Mount Tabor and take them to overtime says a lot about who we are and what we're doing." The Jaguars took the confidence gained from that expe rience into their next game with Parkland. Again, LIFT was undermanned. The Jaguars had only six players avail able for the game and trailed by 10 at the half. "Parkland tried to take advantage of that by forcing tempo with a full-court press," Davis said. "Our guys got a little frustrated with it in the first half. But in the second half, our kids really played hard." In fact, the Jaguars used a 32-8 third-quarter run to take control of the game. LIFT held on in the fourth quar ter to seal the win. "The tournament was a great opportunity for our school," Davis said. "It gave us a chance to match up against public high schools in Forsyth County. I think it showed our kids that they have what it takes to compete evenly with them even though we don't have the facilities and financial support that they have." Davis said the players on the team stepped up in a big way. "I have to give them a lot of credit," he said. "I can go up and down the roster and say what a great job they did. William Conrad was outstanding shooting the three^point er. Malcolm Davis was unstoppable in the low post. Claude Sales is as talented as any kid in the city. Phillip Ingram is a very talented player. Ronnie Tucker did a great job ruftning the point. "Our reserves also played well. Yurkoy Williams played as hard as anyone Robert Washington did some good things in the first game and so did Trey F/ance."
