"where did harriet tubman stop?" '? O Research, Discovery and Essay Contest Sponsored By The Chronicle The Chronicle is sponsoring a research and essay contest for high school students. The purpose of the contest is to determine where in North Carolina the Underground Railroad stopped. The program is open to Winston-Salem Forsyth County students in two divisions: DIVISION I. 9th & Kith graders DIVISION II. 11th & 12th graders Students, under the supervision of a teacher who will coordinate the research efforts, will research the history of the Underground Railroad in North Carolina. Following the research efforts, students will participate in an essay contest of original essays about their research and discovery experience. Three winners will be selected in each division and will be rewarded as follows: First Prize: $500.00 Second Prize: $250.00 Third Prize: $100.00 In the summer of 2001, the winners and 2 runner ups in each division will receive a 3 night 4 day, all expenses paid, trip that will follow the route of the Underground Railroad in North Carolina.
