Understanding how persecution in the early church allowed for the spread of the Gospel Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson Lesson Scripture: Acts 8:4 8,26-35 Lesson Aims: to understand how persecution in the early church allowed for the spread of the Gospel, to appreciate the effectiveness of Philip's ministry and to become a more obedient witness for Him. Background: Examination of events after Pentecost revealed the continuous power struggle between the Sanhedrin and Jesus (followers also). You see. Jesus* teachings pulled too many Jews away from the religious order of the day. The members of the council felt threatened because the people viewed them different ly. Remember that they were the initial opposition to Jesus. They were able to put pressure on the Roman authorities and thus they acted in crucifying Jesus. From the first persecution (Acts 4), it is obvious that the Sanhedrin wanted to stop the movement. They didn't heed Gamaliel's words. They couldn't deny the miracles, so another plan had to be implemented. That plan was to make Jerusalem unpleas ant for the troublemakers. The council thought that the threat of imprisonment, flogging and death (Stephen) would crush the move ment. The Lord didn't cause the impending persecution but used it to fulfill the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 18-20). Alter Stephen's death, the believers scattered and carried the message with them. Instead of crushing the new sect, the council aided in its spread. Things were going well in Jerusalem. The message was sim ple and it appealed to many. Quite naturally, the opposition intensi fied and the believers were attacked. Last week. Stephen died, becoming the first Christian martyr. At the stoning, the noto rious persecutor (Saul) was cited as a condoning bystander. The persecution heightened. Lesson: Those who are scat tered tend to be sensitive to others who are rejected. Philip, one of the seven, is in Samaria proclaiming Christ. Christianity is all-inclusive and Philip is a powerful witness. He performs many miracles and the people pay attention. He encoun ters Simon, a sorcerer. He con verts but isn't willing to make a complete change. An angel comes to Philip in Samaria to tell him to go south of Jerusalem (Gaza). A proselyte, this Ethiopian eunuch is leaving Jerusalem after reading Isaiah. In Gaza, the Spirit tells Philip to approach this eunuch for he lacks understanding. Obedient to God, Philip explains the Scripture. Philip tells him that the prophet is referring to Jesus, the One slain for the sins of the world. When they approach water, the Ethiopian asks to be baptized. You see. he left Africa unsaved and will return having been washed in the blood of Jesus. Immediately, Philip is taken away to Azotus and then Caesarea. The Ethiopian becomes the vehicle to spread the Word in Eastern Africa. Application: We see over and over how limited our vision is and how unlimited God's is. Humani ty often thinks that they control events and actions. Our awesome God takes our futile efforts and uses them for His Will. Have you noticed how people do things against us and God makes it good? Another interesting note is the effectiveness of one's witness when obedience is at the fore front. The early church was full of l. obedient witnesses that took the message qj?t of Judea to the rest of the world. The struggle is real but. amazingly, it grows us and to God be the glory.
