Obituaries Douthit Funeral Services 404 Northgate Park Drive Winston-Salem, NC 27105 896-0061 ? , I SCOTT Mrs. Emma Lee Scott, AKA Peaches, of 105 W. 25th Street, passed away Monday, March 26. at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of Winston-Salem and a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary. Mrs. Scott was a caregiver for many people. She is survived by her husband. Deacon James H. Scott Sr.; a daughter. Mary S. Harris of the home; two sons, James H. Scott Jr. and Derek (Carla) Scott; two grandchildren, James David Harris and Talia Scott; two aunts. Alma and Christine Marlin; a devoted uncle. Robert Lee Young; two nephews, Edward Leon Miller and Reginald Scott; four nieces, Wyleia Shawn, Mercedes Lea and Taylor Edwina Miller, all of Win ston-Salem, and Iris Margaret Olstead of Rural Hall; a devot ed sister-in-law, Barbara S. Olstead of Rural Hall; two devoted friends, Dorothy Sides and Willie Mae Keaton of Winston Salem ; and several other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday. March 30, at Union Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack Jr. officiated. Inter ment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Douthit Funeral Services. I Russell Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 BLAIR Ms. Betty Ann Blair, 2001 S. Main Street, Apartment 109, Winston-Salem, died March 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native and resident of Forsyth County, born on June 14, 1939, to the late Daniel and Marie Kinney Blair. She was a member of St. Peters World Outreach Center and was employed with Family Services as a Head Start teacher. Ms. Blair was educated in the local schools, attended WSSU and Forsyth Technical College. She was preceded in passing by a grandson, Quinn Blair. She is survived by: three children. Barry Blair of Stone Mountain, Ga., Gaye Blair and Stanley Blair (Chrystoancia), both of Winston-Salem: eight grandchildren, Jamal Blair, Amed Blair, Crystal Blair. JaWaren Blair, Michael Blair. Corey Blair. Curtis Blair Jr. and Michael Davis; two great-grandchil dren, Julia Thomas and Christopher Blair; one sister. Mary Elizabeth Thomas of Philadelphia. Pa.; one nephew. Dexter Blair of Winston-Salem; a host of other relatives and friends. A graveside service was held March 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Ever green Cemetery. Dr. J.C. Hash Sr. officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. BROWN Mr. Jimmie Bryan Brown, known to all as "Jam," 1255 22nd Street. NE. Hickory, died March 26 at Catawba Memorial Hos pital. Hickory, as a result of an automobile accident. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born on May 22, 1969. to Jimmie Brown and Vernette Ackers Brown. He was of the Baptist faith, attended North Forsyth High School and was employed at Conover Furniture Co. He leaves to mourn his passing: his daughter, Jamika Brown: his devoted mother, Vernette Ackers Brown; his father, Jimmie Brown (Shirley), all of Winston-Salem: two brothers, Theodore Ackers and Jamon "J.B." Brown of Winston-Salem; three sis ters, Renea Allen, Tammy James Grice, Crystal Brown, all of Winston-Salem; a loving companion, Linda Bell of Hickory; four aunts, Verta Parker, Patricia Stubbs, Deborah Jones, Beat ie Brown Malone. all of Winston-Salem: two uncles, Jesse Brown and Howard Ackers, both of Winston-Salem; one great aunt, Janie Murray of Winston-Salem; one great-uncle, Roo sevelt Bennett (Betty) of Winston-Salem; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The funeral was held March .11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Russell Funeral Home. Minister Bafil Kellyman officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. CONNOR Mrs. Lillian Brown Connor. 2867 Inca Lane. Winston Salem. died March 27 at her residence, unexpectedly. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born on July 18, 1941, the daughter of Lucille Beatty Brown and the late Chambers C. Brown. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University and was employed for many years in the Lumberton. N.C., School Sys tem. She is survived by: three daughters. Collette Levonne Con nor McLean (Lee). Tyra Connor-Barnett (Shawn) and Kandise Conner of Winston-Salem: one son, Damien Connor of the home; five grandchildren; her mother, Lullie Brown of Win ston-Salem; two sisters, Harnetta Parks of Greensboro and Johnnie Bailey of Sacramento, Calif.: three brothers, Benjamin Brown of Maryland. Gideon Brown (Carolyn) of Sumter, S.C., and Gordon Brown of Winston-Salem: other relatives and friends. The funeral wash held March .11 at 2:30 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church. Rev. CORNISH Mrs. Frances Jewell Manley Cornish, 3324 BriarclifT Road, Winston-Salem, died March 30 at Wake Forest University Bap tist Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 14, 1924, in Jackson, Tenn., to the late James A. and Rose Day Manley. Mrs. Cornish had lived in Winston-Salem, since 1999 and was a retired employee of Alton Mental Health Center as a dietitian. She was a longtime member of the Alton Elks Lodge and the American Legion. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Burnett "Wee Wee" Cornish: and two brothers, James "Tee" Manley and Albert Manley. Left behind to cherish fond memories are: her son. Herbert L. Manley; two brothers, Roosevelt Manley and Ernest (Car olyn) Manley; a devoted uncle. Frank T., and wife. Marian Manley of the home; two devoted friends and caregivers, Dot tie Fulton and Brenda Manley; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. GRIER Mrs. Alice Matthews Grier, formerly of 863 W. 11th Street. Winston-Salem, died March 29 at Meadowbrook Terrace, Advance. She was born on Feb. 16, 1910, in Yadkin County, the daughter of the late Gwyn C. and Ada S. Matthews, and had resided in Winston-Salem for 70 years. She was an active mem ber of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, where she served as president of the Deaconess Board. She was a former member of'the Carver Crest Community Club. Mrs. Grier was a retired employee of the Winston Salem/Forsyth County School System (for approximately 30 years). She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence R. Grier Sr. Cherishing her memory are: two children, Lossie Mae Car penter of the home and Clarence R. (Anita) Grier Jr. of Den ver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; a loving and devoted grand daughter, Priscilla Dixon of Lewisville; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Mamie Jarrett and Margaret (Sam) Shore of Winston-Salem, and Neelie Webber of Washington, D.C.; one brother, James Thomas (Shirley) Matthews of East Bend; four sisters-in-law, Marthola G. Payne, Maxwell Grier, Verna Grier, all of Winston-Salem, and Ann Grier of Los Angeles; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral was held April 2 at 2 p.m. at Goler Metropoli tan AME Zion Church. Rev. Dr. James M. Sloan officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Flome directors were in charge of the arrangements. McKINNON Mrs. Jessie Salley McKinnon, 5401 Mesa Court, Winston Salem, died March 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on Jan. 12, 1927, in Winston-Salem to the late Rev. Ben Salley and Ethel Salley. She attended the Winston Salem/Forsyth County public schools and was a faithful mem ber of Bethlehem Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she was a member of the Senior Missionary Group 2. Mrs. McKinnon was a retired employee of Thomasville Fur niture Industries. She was preceded in death by a brother. Rev. Daniel Salley Sr.; a sister, Thelma Salley Peebles; and a son, Gerald Curtis Douglas. She is survived by; three sons, Vernon (Beverly) Salley, Calvin Salley, Timothy Salley; two daughters. Artheia Salley and Janice (Ricky) Brown; five brothers, Joseph Salley of Salis bury, N.C., Clifton (Louise) Salley of Lenoir, Thomas (Ollie) Salley. Wilbert Salley and Ernest Salley, all of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, among them Whitley Salley of the home and three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other rel atives and friends. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. POWELL Mrs. Ava Marie Hairston Powell, 1432 Emerald Street, Win ston-Salem, died March 27 at Autumn Care, Norfolk, Va. She was born in Forsyth County and was a longtime resident of Winston-Salem. She was a charter member of St. Mark Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Lady's Auxiliary and president of the Usher Board and was a longtime member of the Missionary Circle. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sisters of Bivouac, Chapter 530 since October 1957 and served as worthy matron. She was also a member of Rose of Sharon Community Club for many years. She was employed at Forsyth Memorial Hospital and retired after 37 years of faithful service. She was predeceased by her parents, Marilla CofTer Hair ston and John Perry Hairston: her husband, Linwood Powell Sr.; and her son, Linwood Powell Jr. She is survived by: her daughter, Phyllis P. Mebane; her son in-law. Howard M. Mebane Sr.; and their children, Keith, Tameka, Phyllis and Howard II. She is also survived by a grandson, Michael Powell; a stepson, Charlie Powell (Ophelia); one dear sister, Mrs. Carrie H. Harris; a loving niece, Mary L. Davis; and a host of other precious nieces and nephews, and special friends, including Carolyn Todd, Mary Harris, Lillie Wilson, Corine Thompson and Gladys Wilson. The funeral was held March 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Bap tist Church. Rev. James Fulwood officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
