Alcoholism
1 from page AI
you expect the alcoholic to gel
treatment? Teague asked.
She discussed some miscon
ceptions about alcoholism:
? "People drink because they
are depressed." Generally, people
are depressed because they drink
or use drugs, Teague said. Depres
sion is also a withdrawal symp
tom.
? "An alcoholic who goes
through treatment is cured." Peo
ple "don't understand that recov
ery is a process that will be going
on the rest of their lives," Teague
said.
? "Alcoholism is a personality
or mental disorder." That's not
true, Teague said, but some peo
ple suffer from both alcoholism
and personality or mental disor
der, although one is not the result
of the other.
? "People become alcoholics
because they are separated from
God."
? "Alcoholics relapse because
they want to." Alcoholics relapse
because their bodies are making
them really uncomfortable, said
Teague, who has seen people in
detox who wanted to die.
? "Alcoholics can't get better
and stay better." They can. with
the help of treatment and recovery
programs, Teague said.
Teague offers this advice:
? Realize that if you have a
family history of alcoholism, you
have a greater risk of becoming
addicted to not only alcohol, but
other mood-altering substances,
such as narcotics, pain-killers, Val
ium, appetite suppressants.
? Warn your children before
they go off to college that they
may not have as great a tolerance
for alcohol as some people. Tell
them that some college students
have died from drinking too much
at college hazings.
? Encourage family members
of yours who arc alcoholics to get
treatment. Don't just cover for
them or stabilize them. In-patient
treatment and outpatient treat
ment are available, although
Teague thinks the amount of
treatment that many insurance
companies will pay for is inade
quate. She said, "Treatment for
four days doesn't work. Fourteen
days is a dream; it hardly happens
anywhere anymore. Insurance
doesn't usually pay for that. Four
teen and 28 days would be won
derful."
"look ai your insurance
(major medical) policy...You are
going to have a cap on the number
of times you go to treatment or a
dollar cap. They don't do that
with other major illnesses, except
mental illness and addiction. We
fought for parity and we're not
going to get it." league said,
? If you are an alcoholic, real
ize the three stages of the disease:
tolerance, withdrawal. organ
damage. What stage are you in?
Realize that alcoholics have a
greater tolerance for alcohol. This
is why an alcoholic can drink
someone under the table, Teague
said
? Before prescribing mood
altering drugs, doctors need to
thoroughly question patients if
doctors suspect alcohol or sub
stance dependence. Doctors want
to accommodate, but addicts and
alcoholics can be masters of
manipulation. Teague said
? Alcoholics need to know that
an important part of recovery is
nutrition. "Eat a nutritionally- *
sound diet. Eat fresh fruits and
vegetables, all the things your
mother told you to eat," Teague
said.
? If you arc genetically predis
posed to have an alcohol addic
tion but it is not active, educate
yourself about alcoholism. Teague
recommends the books including
"Under the Influence" by James
Milam and "Beyond the Influ
ence" by (Catherine Ketcham and
William Asbury. Also, check out
the Web site, web of addictions,
which has lots of links.
? There are many good support
and recovery groups, including
Alcoholics Anonymous. Al-Anon,
Alateen, Narcotics Anonymous,
Namon (families of narcotics
addicts) and Voices..
Teague recently gave a talk
about alcoholism, at the Winston
Salem Urban League. |_

Cars line Carver School Road for a chance to get gas for $ 1.

was going to have to fill up this
weekend anyway."
Watson is in the minority.
She likes the idea of $1 gas. but
says she has not complained
much about the mounting gas
prices in the Triad.
"I consider us to be very
lucky when you think about
other people paying up to $3 for
a gallon of gas. And in other
countries, people are paying
more than that for gas," she said.
Jerry Hairston, who said he
arrived at the station soon after
Watson, is not as open-minded
about the skyrocketing prices.
He and other gas hopefuls
looked at a nearby Texaco sta
tion with disdain in their eyes.
"We have been talking about
these high gas prices," he said.
"We are looking at the Texaco
next door at the $1.75 price and
saying, 'Wow, that's some high
gas....There is a big difference
between a dollar and a $1.75."
Those who waited for the
cheap gas used the hours of
down time constructively. Many
got out of their cars and formed
small chatting circles.
Brenda Eldridge said she
came for cheap gas but wound
up partaking in a class reunion
of sorts.
"1 have been talking to peo
pic I have not seen in a long
time." she said with a smile. "It's
like going shopping during the
Christmas holiday and you see
people you have not seen in
years."
Sean Richardson used the
occasion to do a little business
of his own. He held a sign offer
ing bottled water and lemonade
for $1. Richardson, whose
father-in-law owns Jones
Chevron, said he was amazed at
how far the waiting line of cars
had grown.
"I am very surprised by this,"
he said, shaking his head as he
look at the line of cars. "I don't
think anyone expected this kind
of response."
