? - Mrs. Helen Louise Clary, 4131 Eisenhower Road, Winston
Salem. died June 16 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home.
* She was born on Jan. 16, 1944, in Baltimore, Md., to Welton Eley
3nd Helen Jefferson. She attended Baltimore City Schools, graduat
ing from Eastern Senior High School. She studied nursing and
^attended Coppin College in Baltimore, where she also received a cer
tificate in computer science.
' ?* She was a very creative person. You could always find her hands
busy creating flower arrangements, writing stories and poems, draw
ing pictures, baking cakes and sweet potato pies, or doing something
;io help a friend or stranger. She attended New Zion Baptist Church
in Baltimore and later moved to Winston-Salem and joined Mace
donia True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served in
several areas, including the Senior Choir. Mass Choir and journal
ism department. She also gave 20 years of service as a foster moth
er in Baltimore and Winston-Salem.
Her loving and devoted husband, Larry V. Clary; her father, Wel
ton Eley; and a brother, Reginald Haywood, preceded Mrs. Clary in
death.
She leaves to cherish loving memories: her mother, Helen Jeffer
son; three daughters, Cheryl Lancaster and Patricia Clary of the
hpme and Katrina Clary of Winston-Salem; three sons, Vincent
Clary of Baltimore, Kelvin Clary of the home and Anthony Coul
spn of Winston-Salem; son-in-law, Kevin Lancaster Sr., and grand
son, Kevin Lancaster Jr., both of the home; six brothers, Joseph,
Robert Lee. Willie, Welton Jr. and Henry, all of Baltimore, and
Elder Rinaldo (Angela) Branson of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters.
Joan Phillips of Winston-Salem and Josephine Green of Baltimore;
three aunts, Sarah (Roy) Keating. Catherine Jordan and Trezie
(Leroy) Neal, and her uncle, Elder Robert Campbell, all of Balti
more; and a host of other relatives and many cherished friends.
The funeral was held June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Russell
Funeral Home. Bishop S.D. Johnson officiated. Burial followed at
Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, N.C. Russell Funeral Home
directors were in charge of the arrangements.
DAVIS
Mr. James Albert Davis, affectionately known to family and
friends as "Joe," 102 Sheep Rock Road, Danbury, N.C., died June 17
at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Danbury.
He was born on July 2, 1918, in Stokes County to James Robert
and Nellie Benton Davis. He was employed as a radiology aide for
Stokes-Reynolds Hospital. He retired after 39 years of service in
1993. He was the mayor of Danbury. serving one term of two years
in 1989 and a four-year term in 1991. He was also a volunteer for the
Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. For a number of years, he
operated the Film projector at the Walnut Cove Theater.
Although his skills were too numerous to name, he was a master
craftsman in woodwork, excelling in picture frames, including mak
ing frames for the Arts Council, government buildings and the hos
pital. He was also known for his masonry work. He loved his coun
try music and playing the guitar. He was an excellent photographer.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his brothers. Jack. Bill and
Ben; his sisters, Eva, Mary Ruth and Eleanor.
He is survived by: one son. Donnell (Jackie) Allen; two grand
sons. Audie (Sherria) Allen and Adrian (Sheri) Allen; three great
grandchildren. Joshua. Jazmyn and Kymari: one sister, Rachel
(Joseph) Penn; a devoted niece, Susan (Garland) Washington; a
devoted nephew, Ronnie (Christie) Wright; and a loyal, devoted
friend and co-worker. Dorothy (Richard) Pettus.
The funeral was held June 21 at 2 p.m. at Danbury Community
Church in Danbury. Lay Pastor Jennie Hemrick officiated. Burial
followed at Danbury Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors
were in charge of the arrangements.
HYMAN
; Mr. James Henry Grier Hyman, affectionately known to family
;and friends as "Bubba," 5611 Bethania Road, Pfafftown. died June
? 13 at his residence unexpectedly.
He was born on Jan. 17. 1933, in Winston-Salem to Mrs. Bessie
G. and the late James Hyman. He attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County Schools and graduated from Carver High School. He was a
?Marine veteran of the Korean War. He spent a number of years in
? bJew Jersey until he returned to Winston-Salem in 1972. He was
employed by Winston-Salem State University until his retirement in
j&90.

He is survived by: daughters, Alison (Michael) Westbrook and

Mr. Celest W. Sanders. 2526 Atlee Street, Winston-Salem, died

: ; He was born on Oct. 9, 1911. to the late Walter and Alice
; Sanders. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.,
Factory 12. and was owner and operator of Sanders Barber Shop.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a deacon
? 4nd a member of the Senior Usher Board, Missionary 14 and the
?Sunday school until his health failed.

BRANTLEY
Mrs. Jessie Ann Long Brantley, known to family and friends at
'SAN," 2203 Pleasant Street. Winston-Salem, dfed June 18 at Wake
Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was born on Aug. 24, 1948. in Winston-Salem to the late
Jesse Edward Long and Mildred Robinson Long. She attended Pais
ley High School, was a faithful member of Second New Bethel Bap
tist Church and was employed at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center for 26 years.
She is survived by: her husband. Joseph S. Brantley of the home;
one son. Kelvin Long; two daughters, Keesha Williams (Victor) of
Clemmons and Kimberly Ross (Kevin) of Winston-Salem; five
beloved grandchildren, Travaughn Long, Kandice Ross, Cierra
Roberts, Victor Williams Jr. and Kyra Ross; two brothers, Jimmy
Lewis McKinney (Jean) of Arlington. Va.. and Mighael Lee Long of
Winston-Salem: four sisters, Linda Long of Torrance. Calif., Jen
nifer Long, Karen Keit (Jasper) and Darlene Foust-Ziglar (Bruce),
all of Winston-Salem; four nephews; five nieces; three special aunts,
Julia Spencer, Alma Barber and Mary Williams: a host of brothers
in-law and sisters-in-law; other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held June 23 at noon at Second New Bethel Bap
tist Church. Rev. Zavious Pratt officiated. Burial followed at the

FOOTE
Mr. Sylvester Patterson Foote transcended from mortality to
immortality on Father's Day, June 17.
Mr. Foote was the eldest child born to the late George and Arri
er Foote on Sept. 18, 1917, in Mocksville. He faithfully served his
country during World War II. He then returned to Winston-Salem,
where he met and married Ola Mae Martin Foote. who preceded
him in death on Dec, 12, 2000. Married for 60 years, they lovingly
reared their three sons. They instilled in them, by word and example,
values that aided them in becoming strong, independent men.
Their family size^ncreased because of the numerous friends of
their sons and family members that they nurtured as their own.
Mr. Foote proudly worked for and retired from R.J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co. after more than 40 years of service. Additionally, he
worked for a number of years at Sears and Roebuck Co.
His leisure time was spent gardening; repairing, especially with
his sons, vehicles; visiting the sick and shut-ins; but most important,
spending quality time with family. He was a sports advocate and was
fond of traveling. He was a member in long-standing at Chinqupion
Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 4462 N.C. Hwy. 801, Mocksville,
NC 27128, where he served as a deacon. His life was certainly a tes
tament to his goodness, love, strength of character, wit and wisdom,
and the void he leaves can never be filled.
Mr. Foote was also preceded in death by his middle son. Ralph
Henry Foote. on March 4. 1997; a brother and sister, George "June"
Foote and Juliean F. Williams.
He is survived by loving sons; BufOrd S. (Chaudia) Of Walker
town. Rickie W. (Linda) of Pfafftown and an "adopted" son. Earl
(Phyllis) Lattimore of Winston-Salqm; sisters, Naomi F. Frost and
Elizabeth F. Dalton of Mocksville and Cleo (Sylvester) F. Palmer of
Brooklyn. N.Y.; brothers, Cal (Eva) Foote and Henry Lee (Evella)
Foote of Mocksville; grandchildren Buford O. Foote. Ill of Wash
ington, DC., Bonita Foote-Moore of Bowie. Md., Tonya F.
(Charles) Little of Greensboro, Monte Foote of Barcelona. Spain,

Home-going services began on Friday, June 22. from 7-8 p.m. at
Gilmore Memorial Chapel and continued on June 23 at 11 a.m. at
Chinqupion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Mocksville. where
Rev, Darrel McConnell officiated. Burial followed at the church
cemetery,

CAMPBELL
Mrs. Betty Snow McNeil Campbell. 91, of 1211 E. 30th Street,
passed June 20 at the WFU Baptist Medical Center.
She was a native of Fayetteville and had lived in New York for
more than 40 years before moving to Durham, N.C. She had resided
in Winston-Salem since 1992 with her daughter. Mrs. Campbell wij
of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by: a daughter, Edna M. Wilkins of the home;
eight grandchildren, Gordon (Beatrice) Bridges, Betty (WilbetJJ
Haney, all of Winston-Salem, Boyd Williams of Lillington, N.Qa
Sherman (Russline) Williams, Dana (Robert) Moore, Clatha (RogeH
Kirkpatrick, Pamela Farmer, all of Winston-Salem, and Dickie
Farmer. Washington, D.C.; a devoted niece, Clatha Louise Williams
of Durham; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Farmer of Sacramento,
Calif.; and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held June 25 at the chapel of Fiooper Funerail
Home. Eldress Brenda McCloud officiated. Entombment followed

GWYN
Mr. Edward Troy Gwyn of Winston-Salem passed June 19 at
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of
Winston-Salem and had resided in Philadelphia, Pa., for most of his
life. Mr. Gwyn was a retiree of Merck & Co. Inc. and a faithful
member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by: his wife of the home, Marian Jones Gwyn; twp
daughters, Sharon Barnes and Wanda (Mark) Stevens, all of
Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons, Edward Gwyn Jr. and spouse of Mon
roe. N.C., Larry (Arlene) Gwyn and Donnell Gwyn, all of Philadel
phia; three stepchildren, Linda Parks of Winston-Salem, Marshall
(Angela) Parks of Hope Mills, N.C., and Marcus Parks of Georgia;
15 grandchildren: four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Gwyn;
one brother. William (Miriam) Gwyn, all of Winston-Salem; three
sisters-in-law, Shirley (Kenny) Dodd and Hilda Lowe, all of Win
ston-Salem, and Sallie Mitchell of Newberry, S.C.; one brother-in
law. George (Mae Francis) Jones Sr. of Winston-Salem; and a host
of other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held June 23 at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist
Church. Rev. I.L. Anthony officiated. Interment followed in Pied
mont Memorial Gardens. Hooper Funeral Home directors were in
charge of the arrangements.
LOCKHART
On July 27, 1948, in Winston-Salem, Marion Nathaniel and
Francis Johnson Lockhart Sr. were blessed with their first child, a
son. Marion Nathaniel Jr. He attended schools in the Winston
Salem/Forsyth County public school system. He served his country
during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Marine Corps, earning hon
orable discharge. For 23 years he was a dedicated employee of the
Winston-Salem Fire Department. He was also a member of the
Ebony Fraternity and the American Legion Post 220.
The afternoon of June 16 at the home of a friend was the sunset
for Mr. Lockhart. As a result of this home-going, he leaves to cher
ish his memory: his wife, Velma Diann Lockhart; two daughters.
Carman Renee Lockhart and Kenya Michelle Lockhart. all of Win
ston-Salem; his mother, Frances Fuller of Philadelphia, Pa.; three
sisters, Debra (Thomas) Sumners of Clemmons, N.C., Robin and
Lisa Fuller of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, Artis (Georgia)
Lockhart of Durham, N.C., Leonard (Angela) Lockhart and Felton
Lockhart of Winston-Salem; two aunts, Willie Ola Johnson, Win
ston-Salem, and Ruth Boyd, Rock Hill, S.C.; several niecels,
nephews, cousins and friends, including devoted cousins Carl Miller
and Patricia (Dan) Bennett.
The funeral was held June 22 at 3 p.m. at Canaan Baptist
Church. Rev. W.E. Brannon officiated. Interment followed in the

LYLES
Mrs. Lillian Morgan Johnson Lyles, formerly of 137 Columbine
Drive. Apt. 611 and Springwood Care Nursing Center, passed June
17 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. II, 1921,(in Columbus, Ga., to the late Charlie
and Ida Bell Rolley Morgan. Mrs. Lyles was a resident of Winston
Salem for most of her life where she was a member of Ephesus Sev
enth-day Adventist Church. She was preceded in death by her hus
band. Melvin Johnson; her brother, Charlie L. Morgan Jr.; and fof
mer spouse, Van B. Lyles Sr.
Surviving are: five children, Melvin B. Johnson of New York,
N.Y.. D. Annette Lyles of Norcross, Ga., and Linda G. Lyles, Van B.
Lyles Jr. and Beverly L. (Donnie) Simmons, all of Winston-Salem;
six grandchildren, Darrell A. (Patricia) Johnson Sr.. Letetia S. John
sou. all of Washington, D.C.. Christopher V. (Latoya) Lyles Sr.,
Houma, L.A.. LaSaundra S. Johnson, Donnie D. Simmons Jr. and
Nicolis R. Lyles, all of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren,
Apryle, Darrell Jr., Micah Van, Jonah Morgan, Courtney and
Christopher Van Jr.; near and dear to her heart. Michael (Carol)

Carlton Robinson was eulogist. Interment followed in the Evergreen

WEBSTER
Mrs. Ella S. Webster, formerly of 1254 Addison Ave., passed
away on June 18 at the New Beginning Assisted Living Center fol
lowing a lengthy illness. A native of Orangeburg. S.C., she was a res
ident of Winston-Salem for most of her life where she was a retiree
of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of Progressive Apos
tolic Church. Her spouse. James Webster, preceded her in death. ?
Survivors include: a stepson, Julius Webster of Capitol Heights.
Md.: a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Clark of Winston-Salem, other ral
atives and friends.
The funeral was held June 23 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Hooper
Funeral Home. Bishop O.D. LeGrant officiated. Interment followed
