? Mr. Mellon Bohannon known to all as "Bo," 510 Freedom Street,
Apt. 10-B, Winston-Salem, passed away Jan. 5 at Wake Forest Uni
versity Baptist Medical Center.
I He was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Statesville, the second son of the
3ate 11a and General Bohannon. Melton Bohannon attended Forsyth
OCounty schools and graduated from Guilford Technical College. He
?resided for many years in Washington, DjC.. where he was employed
for the U.S. Department of Defense. He later lived in New York City
Before returning to Winston-Salem in 1962. He retired from the
American Red Cross. He was a member of Second Calvary Baptist
Church.
; He is survived by: one brother. General Bohannon of Santa Mon
;ica, Calif.; three sisters, Gloria B. McClellan (Joe), Elnora Mumford,
"both of Winston-Salem, and Brenda B. Enoch of Lewisville: two
nieces, Latreva "Treva" Mumford of New York, N.Y., Patrice Sheff
(Richard) of Lewisville; three nephews. Christopher "Moon" Mum
tt>rd, one devoted. Vincent Mumford, both of Winston-Salem, and
Andre "Carlos" Mumford (Mechelle) of Rural Hall; one great
nephew and three great-nieces; a devoted friend, Robin Handy: a
godson, Joran Handy; other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Jan 9 at 3 p.m. at Second Calvary Baptist
Church. Rev. Donald Stowe officiated. Burial followed in-Evergreen
Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the
arrangements.
HARRIS
Mr. Leroy Harris, known as "Buster" and "Harry," 4911 Brian
Center Lane, formerly of 1944 Lansing Drive. Winston-Salem,
passed away Dec. 29 at Brian Center following a period of illness.
He was bom on Sept. 17, 1909, in Lancaster, S.C., to the late Ran
som and Patsy Harris. He lived in South Carolina in his early years
and moved to Winston-Salem during his teen-age years. He was
employed for years in several positions as chauffeur, taxi driver,
house painter and was owner of two gas stations. He owned "Harry's
Motors" for more than 50 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving daughteraind son-in
law, Audrey L. Stephens and CW04 Jerry W. Stephens of Virginia
Beach, Va.; three granddaughters, Telma. Andrea and LaNiece
?Stephens of Virginia Beach; two great-granddaughters; 10 nieces.
-Lizzie Mack. Sarah Craig, Lamette Mobley. Retha Anderson. Cecila
Johnston, Arlena Mobley, Annie Weddington and Catherine Stinson,
all of Charlotte. Carrie Chapman, Dorothy Robinson of Washington,
D.C.; one nephew, Willie McDow of Charlotte; a longtime devoted
friend, Thelma Foster of Virginia Beach; two very special friends,
Harlena Wright and Doris Gray of Winston-Salem; a host of other
relatives, friends and well-wishers.
The funeral was held Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Russell

? I Ms. Cassandra Darlette Jones, 3910 Shamel Street, Winston
?Salem, passed away on Jan. 4 at Forsfth^ledical Center. She was
3>om on May 29, 1967, in Winston-Salem to Dianna S. Jones and the
Jate Charlie L. Jones. She was a graduate of North Forsyth High
?School and Forsyth Technical College in business management. She
was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she
was a Young Adult Missionary and a member of the Inspirational
Choir, the Signal Ministry and the Pastor Bible Study. She was a
JJiember of the board of directors of the Sickle Cell Foundation of ?
jWinston-Salem. She was employed as office manager for Plymouth
^Printing Co. and a substitute teacher for First Assembly Christian
?School.
I She is survived by: her dear mother, Dianna S. Jones of the
$ome; two sisters, Pamela Williams (Dwayne) and Selina Jones; one
Brother, KarlT. Jones Sr.; her grandmothers, Minnie S. Jones of
yinston-Salem and Jane Caesar of Bermuda; her grandfather, Ken
neth Simons of Bermuda; a devoted friend, Chris Allen; other rela

LEWIS
'. Ms. Geraldine Barbara "Gerri" Lewis. 400 Bacon Street. Win
ston-Salem, passed away on Jan. 2 at Wake Forest University Bap
tist Medical Center. She was bom on May 14, 1932, to Mattie Hall
Lewis and the late Johnny Clifton Lewis. She attended Emmanuel
-Lutheran Boarding School in Greensboro and William Penn High
"School in Philadelphia. Pa. She worshipped at Berean Baptist
Church while in Philadelphia. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, she
jpined Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she was a
faithful member until her health declined.
She is survived by: her loving mother. Mattie Lewis of the home;
a host of devoted cousins, other relatives, godsisters, church family,
care-givers, attentive neighbors and many friends.
The funeral was held Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at Ephesus Seventh Day
Adventist Church. Elder Moses L. Edwards Sr. officiated. Burial fol
lowed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were
in charge of the arrangements.
PIGFORD
Mr. William Edward Pigford, 2306 Greenway Ave.. Winston
Salem,^passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 2 at John Umstead Hospi
tal in burner. He was bom Aug. 17. 1957, to Amos E. Pigford and
Thelma Jarrett Pigford in Winston-Salem. He was a former member
of Union Chapel Baptist Church and a graduate of North Forsyth
High School. Class of 1975.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved parents. Amos and
Thelma Pigford of the home: one dear brother. Ronald E. Pigford: a
loving sister. Evelyn Rose Pigford Acree. and her husband. J. Fred
erick Acree; his grandmother. Irene JarTett: two aunts. Juanita Fish
er of Brooklyn, N.Y.. and Earnestine Wardlow of Winsion-Salem;

SMITH
Mrs. Edna E. Smith. 71 W. 112th Street, New York, NW? passed
away on Dec. 31 in New York, N.Y.
She was bom on June 25, 1911, in North Carolina to Victoria and
Edward Turner. At an early age, Edna joined her grandfather's
church, Piney Grove AME Church, and was currently a member of
Rush Temple AME Zion Church in Jamaica. N.Y She was employed
in administrative work until she retired.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; son James; her broth
ers, Clarence, Charles, Norris, Bruce and Thomas; her sister, Marie,
and granddaughter, Aurielle.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Alford Smith;
son Alfred, and wife Adrian; three daughters, Victoria, Joyce Smith
and Helen Davis; grandchildren Jean Lawrence, Gloria and James
Campbell, Rodney and wife Lillian, James and wife Janice, Lauren
and husband Anthony, Elaina, Nicole and husband Lamond, Efrain,
Anthony, Jasmine. Precious, Ayrica and Christine; nieces and
nephews, Liz, Margie, Earlaine, Eva, Mary, Eddie, Frank and
Charles; sister-in-law Doris; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great
grandchildren; special friends Gloria Elrod, Ernestine Reid, Armen
zer Holmes; and a host of other relatives and friends. She is locfljly
survived by two cousins. Mrs. Mary Foote and Mrs. Earline Leach,
both of Winston-Salem.
The funeral was held Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Russell
Funeral Home. Burial followed at Rocky Creek AME Zion Church
Cemetery in Harmony, N.C. Russell Funeral Home directors were in

SWOPCS
Mrs. Leola Stewart Swopes, 3324 Briar Cliff Road. Winston
Salem, passed away Jan. 3 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was bom on Feb. 28, 1904, in Brighton, III., to the late Frank
M. and Addie Henry Stewart. She moved to Alton, III., with her par
ents at a very young age. Mrs. Swopes was a seamstress by profes
sion. She was married to Walter Swopes, who preceded her in death
in 1983. She was also preceded in death by: five brothers, Wayman,
Stewart, Frank M. Stewart, Isaac Stewart, John W. Stewart and
Elmer Stewart; and three sisters, Lillie Perry, Harriett Jackson and
Addie Mae Hutchinson. .
She leaves to cherish fona memories: one devoted sister, Marian
Manley (Frank T.) of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Anna Grace
Stewart (Elmer) of Alton, 111.; four devoted nieces, June Burghardt
(Charles) of Wahiawa, Hawaii, Brenda Manley and Charlotte Man- -
ley of Winston-Salem, Cassandra Manley of Greensboro; two
nephews, Terry and Frank Manley of Winston-Salem; a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Jan. 7 at 12:30 p.m. at Union Baptist
Church, Alton, 111. Burial followed at Alton City Cemetery. Cathy
Williams and Sons Chapel, 1368 D'Adrian Professional Park, Alton.

INGRAM
To every thing there is a-season, and a time to every purpose
under the heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant,
and a time to pluck up that which is planted (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2).
The "time" as revealed by the wisdom of Solomon was realized
on Jan. 1, 2002, in Winston-Salem when our beloved Fred Willis
Ingram Sr. exchanged life on earth for eternal rest and peace.
He was bom March 18, 1934, to the late Major Sr. and BeSsie
Marshall Ingram. He was a lifelong resident of the city and a gradu
ate of Atkins High School. He attended Russell's Business College
and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Ingram was a retired
mechanic from. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was of the Baptist
faith. He joined Mars Hill Baptist Church at an early age.
Love for his family and others was evident by his enthusiasm for
life, genuine concern and expressions of devotion. We who are left
behind trust in love and understanding of the all-wise God in the
assurance that someday all things will be made plain as we surren
der him into his keeping.
As his presence Was felt, so will it be greatly missed and cher
ished by: his wife, Barbara Kelly Ingram of the home; three children.

Ingram of Baltimore; one goddaughter. Debra Henry of Baltimore;
two sisters-in-law, Shirley (Jacob) Allen of Raleigh and Patricia
Kelly of Winston-Salem; extended family Brenda R. (Royce) Burris
and Lamorlf Robinson, all of Charlotte; and a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mr. Myron E. Anderson. 111 Apt. L. E. Second Street, passed
away Dec. 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Win
ston-Salem and a former employee of Forsyth Medical Center.

He is survived by: his wife, Samantha S. Anderson of the
home; his mother, Mrs. Gloria B. Anderson of Winston-Salem: a

Va.; his mother-in-law. Ms. Thelma Sloan of Winston-Salem: six

Mr. Leon Jerome Carruthers, a.k.a. Wag, of 274 Weisner
Street, passed away Dec. 30 at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center. He was a native of this city, a graduate of Atkins
High Scho((J,and was a retired employee of Stroh's Brewery after
23 years.
He is survived by: five daughters, Tonya (Dereck) Caldwell of
Charlotte, Leola (the Rev. Wayman) Monroe Jr. of Rural Hall and
Cynthia (Donavan) Clark and Pamela McCellan, both of Win
ston-Salem, and Taleona (Kelvin) Mayfiejd of Kernersville; 13
grandchildren; two stepchildren, Tasha Smith and Twanna Car
ruthers, both of Winston-Salem; a niece, Tomasina Lentz of
Michigan; two nephews, Quinton Drummond and Donald-Ray
Lineberger, both of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Renee Jack
son of Winston-Salem; and a" host of other relatives and friends.

Avenue Christian Church, East Location. Pastor Sheldon

CARSON
Mr. Harmon "Tick" Carson, 2006 Lincoln Ave., passed away
Dec. 12 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Mr. Carson was born June 11, 1940, to the late Hubert and
Laura Hanes Carson. He was the owner of Carson and Sons
Painting Co. Mr. Carson was a member of Union Baptist Church,
where he served faithfully. He was educated in the local schools
and was a graduate of Atkins High School. He was a veteran of
the U.S. Navy and served with many community groups, Little
League, Boys Baseball Club, Travel Club^Atkins High School
Class of '61, Reunion of the Big Four High Schools of this city.
He enjoyed helping others.
Mr. Carson leaves to cherish his precious memory: two sons,
Christopher Laverne Carson Sr. and Harmon Carson Jr. and their
fiancees. Keyonda Mitchell and Mary Cotton; four grandchildren,
Christopher Lavern Carson Jr., Eliyah Psalm Carson, Brandon
Cotton and Jamiel Cotton, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters,
Ruth (Vanwood) Banner, Emogene Johnson, both of Winston
Salem. Mildred (Robert) Burgess of Rochester, N.Y.; three broth
ers, Albert (Barbara) Carson, Leon (Willie Mae) Carson and

McCULLOUGH
Mrs. Helen T. McCullough, 1611 McPherson Street, Greens
boro. passed away Dec. 27 at Moses Cone Hospital. She was a
native of Orangeburg, S.C.. Mrs. McCullough was a member of
Mt. Zion United Church of God, where she was on the Mothers
Board. While in Winston-Salem, she was a faithful member of
Mercy Seat Holiness Church.
She is survived by: a faithful and dedicated husband, Alphon
zo W. McCullough of the home; one daughter, Barbara M. Shuler
of Greensboro; two sons, Alonzo W. McCullough Jr. (Linda) of
Fort Smith. Ark., and Ronald McCullough (Arlesia) of Atlanta,
Ga.: seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister,
Adele Fair of Winston-Salem; one brother, David Lee Thomas; a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion United
Church of God. Elder Bernard Curry officiated. Interment fol
lowed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were in

Mr. Daniel Drummond Todd Sr. of 1906 Short Street passed
away Dec. 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Spar
tanburg. S.C., and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds
Tobaccp Co. and Hanes Mall. Mr. Todd was a member of Mars
Hill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and former Sunday
school teacher.
He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Carolyn W. Coleman-Todd
of the home; a daughter, Dorothy T. Brown; two sons, Daniel
Todd Jr. of Winston-Salem, and James D. Todd of Sanford; a
stepson. Norman (Susan) Coleman of Winston-Salem; 11 grand
children; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchil
dren; and several other relatives and friends. The funeral was held
Dec. 22 at I p.m. at Mars Hill Baptist Church. Rev. K.E. Lilly
officiated. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrange

Mr. John E. West, 2241 Glenn Ave., passed away Jan. 2 at
Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Davie County and
was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Mr. West
was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where he was a
deacon. '
He is survived by: a very devoted wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Scott
West of the home; one daughter, Mary W. (Carlyle) Reynolds of
the city; two sons, Anthony Ray (Wanda) Scott of Houston,
Texas, and Hefman Lee (Cynthia) West of Mocksville; 11 grand
children and seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Glenn E.
(Margie) West of Spring Lake, N.C., Hubert A. (Millie) West Sr.
of Mocksville. Joe C. (Janet) West of Columbus, Ohio, and Ben
jamin H. (Lillie) West of Avon Park, Fla.; an aunt. Pearl Eaton of
Bronx. N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Sadie West of Winston-Salem
and Olivia West of Goldsboro; and several nieces, nephews,
cousins and other relatives and friends.
