when they don't feel the incen

"It takes a whole lot for this
day to happen." he said. "I
think that's why our kids
always come back in the off
season and talk to the younger
players coming on behind
them. Since I've been here,
we've'had more than 100 kids
to sign scholarships to go to
college. But it's not always
easy. And what happens from
this point forward is really up
to the players."
This season all of the Carv
er signees are heading off to
CIAA schools. Last year the
Yellowjackets' top recruits,
Russell Bonham and Goryal
Scales, signed with Maryland
(which captured the ACC
championship) and Wake For
est, respectively. Some 10 oth
ers from that class also inked
pacts to attend college. Wilkes,
a former All-American lineman
at Winston-Salem State, said
the most import^ thing in all
of it is for the players to take
advantage of whatever oppor
tunity is given them.
"It's mostly a matter of
what you do with what you
have." he said. "I'm proud to
have gone to Winston-Salem
State because that was the best
place for me. They helped me
to become successful. Winston
Salem State gave me the oppor
tunity to prove myself and get
better. That's all you caff ask
for in life is an opportunity."
Of those who signed at last
Wednesday's gathering, two
will be heading off to Winston
Salem State to follow in the
footsteps of their fathers. Bran
don Clark (6-5, 325-pound
offensive lineman) is the son of
Bobby Clark, who was a tight
end at WSSU in the early
1980s, and Katrina Clark.
Kedric Martin (6-1, 175-pound
wide receiver) is the son of
William Murrell. who played
tight end at WSSU in the late
1970s and went on to play pro
fessional football, and Teresa
Martin.
Koryell Williams (6-3, 200
pound quarterback), son of
Thurmond Edwards, and Roy
Lee Berry Jr. (6-1, 230-pound
defensive lineman), son of
Myra Richardson, signed with
Elizabeth City.
Willie Daniels (5-11, 215
pound linebacker), son of Jean
nie Mason, and Patrick Jenkins
(6-3, 230-pound defensive line
man), son of Daniel and Patri
cia Jenkins, signed with St.
Augustine's, which will play a
CIAA slate for the first time in
more than 30 years. Dwayne
Campbell (6-0. 200-pound line
backer) was not in attendance
at the gathering, but has also
signed with St. Augustine's.
"These guys have a golden
opportunity before them,"
Wilkes said. "What they make
of it is up to them. But they've
done something that a lot of
guys never get the chance to do
at the end of their high school
careers. I wish them the best of
luck in the future and 1 know
they will become a part of the
tradition we have here that
makes this school special."
