Religion Church to hold Heritage Sunday SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Union Baptist Church family will con tinue its monthlong celebration of black histo ry with a special Heritage Sunday program on Feb. 24. Dr. Delores J. Smith of the Winston Salem "Urban League will be the speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service. Legacy awards will be presented to Miitter Evans and Rep. Larry Womble. Everyone is invited to dress in ethnic or "ole' timey" attire. Smith, known as "D," is a native of Youngstown, Ohio. She earned the bachelor of arts degree in social work from Adelphi Uni versity and a Master's degree in counseling from Youngstown State University. '"D" recently earned the Ed.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University. After working in New York in the corpo rate sector for more than 20 years. Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m., and at 7 p.m. visual artist Ann Bonner will dis cuss one of her works. "Consolidation," a mixed media piece with John 3:16 in 18 differ ent languages. Emmanuel Baptist Church to hold centennial observance to honor the late Langston Hughes SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Emmanuel Baptist Church Board of Christian Education and the African-American History Committee 2002 invite the public to commemorate the 100th birthday of Langston Hughes. The two groups will collaborate on an art based program titled "The African American Artist: Still Climbing the Racial Mountain?" This event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23. from 2-4 p.m. in Hones the multipurpose room of Emmanuel Baptist Church. 1975 Shalimar Drive. The purpose of this gathering harks back to an essay"Hughes wrote in 1926 titled '"The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain." This essay serves as a declara tion of independence for African-American artists who have been in conflict over the years about the expectations of black audi Peterson ences and white audiences. Because Feb. I, 2002, marked the 100th birthday of Hughes, local artists will discuss the plight ^ or the African-American artists today. Three local artists will speak on a panel, and exhib it their works, and other artists wilt exhibit and mar ket their creations. James and Earnestine Huff of Huff Art Studio and Sam McMil lan of Sam's Art Gallery will speak on the panel. Woods James and Earnestine Huff stand in front of one of their murals. Other artists to exhibit include Jerry Hanes, Melissa Peterson and Leon Woods. Students from the Sun day school department will present a poem by Hughes titled "The Freedom Train." The Spiritual Choir will sing meter hymns, and the Emmanuel Spiritual Dancers will perform. McMillan This program will kick off a youth art com petition based on the theme "Honoring Our Ancestors. Honoring Our Elders." This contest will culminate in September around Grandpar ents* Day activities. Union makes a call for peace SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Forsyth County Baptist Training and Christian Education Union is making an appeal to all Baptist churches to come together in peate. The churches are asked to come together on Sunday. March 3, at I :30 p.m. at Galilee Baptist Church. 575 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where Rev. Robert L. McGowens is pastor. Ms. Bobby Stewart is president of the union. The union adopted a plan to observe the Lenten season. Feb. 13 through March 30. and with emphasis on practicing peace, beginning with self and then moving to home, church, com munity and the workplace. Lent is a 40-day peri od (from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, the day 'before Easter) when Christians prepare for Easter. It is a time for serious, disciplined self-exam ination and meditation upon the upcoming anniversary of His Resurrection. With the unrest in our homes, churches, communities and coun tries of the world, we are called hy God to be peacemakers, children of God. The Scripture base is Matthew 5:9. Participants will be asked to practice peace for 40 days by giving up behaviors in their lives' that may result in violence. Letters will be sent to area churches asking them to participate.
