Ms. Nannie Lee Shelton Downs, age 91, formerly of 1631 Thur
mond Street, passed on Friday, Feb. 8, at the'Palliative Care Center
following a period of illness. She was bom on Feb. 27, 1910, to the
late Willie Burl Shelton and Mattie Walters Shelton. She was a
member of Mercy Seat Holiness Church, where she served on the
Mothers Board. She was preceded in death by her husband, McKin
ley Downs; three sons, John Harley Jr. William Harley and Arthur
Lee Hairston; sisters Martha Shelton, Sanaira Parker and Mary Shel
ton Sanders House; and one brother, William Shelton.
She leaves to cherish her memories; Louise Shelton Brown of
Winston-Salem, Juanita Shelton Banks of St. Petersburg, Fla., and
Virginia Shelton Fisher of Sacramento, Calif.; grandchildren
Stephanie Hairston Thomson of New York, Michael (Denise) Harley
of Long Beach, Calif., and Michelle (Donald) Bolding of Lake
wood, Calif.; great-grandchildren Michael, Kayla and Myles Harley.

The funeral was held on Feb. 16. at 1 p.m. at Mercy Seat Holi
ness Church. Bishop Theodore Rice officiated. Burial followed in
Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to and services
were conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home.
ROMAN
Ms. Maggie Roman, age 91, of Magnolia Gardens in .Spencer.
N.C., passed on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Rowan Medical Center. She
was bom on July 3, 1910, in Ware Shoals. S.C., to the late Jessie and
Frances Keller. She was a member of Thompson Chapel in Lexing
ton, N.C. She was preceded in death by: her husband. Willie Albert
Roman; eight brothers and three sisters. She leaves to cherish her
loving memories: two sons, Willie J. (Bessie) Roman Sr., Bobby
"Russell" L. Roman; one brother, Grady Keller; one sister. Bertha
Mae Keller; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral was held on
Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Lexington,
N.C. Rev. Darrell Thomas officiated. Interment followed in Lexing
ton City Cemetery.

OILMORC
Ms. Raina Shara? Gilmore, age 29, of 113 Maymead Street in
Lexington, N.C., departed into eternal rest on Feb. 12, at WFU Bap
tist Medical Center in Winston Salem. Ms. Gilmore was bom in
Lexington on May 22, 1972. She was a 1991 graduate of Lexington
Senior High School and was attending classes at Davidson County
Community College. She was also a member of Resident Council of
the Lexington Housing Authority . She was a member of Abiathar
Temple, where the Honorable Bishop J. Mcintosh presides. Preced
ing her in death were: her grandparents, Jacob Dewitt Davis. Randy
Watkins, Walter Sr. and Elizabeth Watkins. She leaves to cherish her
memories: two daughters, Tashonda and Rameshia Gilmore; one
son, Demetri Gilmore; mother Jameshia Gilmore of Lexington;
father Walter Watkins and stepmother Thelma of Salisbury, N.C.;
two sisters, Meca Gilmore ad Walt-Tex Baremore: one brother.

JOHNSON
Mr. Kevin Eugene Johnson, age 29, of 1418 Thurmond Street,
passed on the night of Wednesday. Feb. 13, at Liberty Woods Nurs
ing Home after an extended illness. He was born in Winston-Salem
on March 21, 1972, to Mr. Ronnie Connell and Ms. Jackie Johnson.
He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and FTCC (Forsyth
Technical Community College). He was an employee for TIMCO
Aviation Sales Co. of Winston-Salem and was a member of Saint
Peters World Outreach Center. Mr. Johnson leaves to mourn: his
mother, Ms. Jacquelyn Johnson of the home; father. Mr. Ronnie
Connell of the city; one sister. Kellye Johnson Ham of Jacksonville.
Fla.; one nephew. Jayvontaye Johnson, and one niece. Chanquea
Johnson, both of Jacksonville. Fla.; special uncle. Michael E. Hair

JAMISON
Mr. Caldwell Jamison, age 84. of 701 E. Green Street, passed on
Friday. Feb. 15, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born on
Feb. 2, 1918, in Concord, N.C., to the late John Jamison and Ester
Wynecoff. He was a retired employee of Globe Industries and for
mer member of Saint Stevens AME Zion Church. Mr. Jamison was
preceded in death by: his wife. Helen Jamison; father: mother; three
sisters. Bertha, Cora Lee and Jeennie Jamison: and a granddaughter.

He leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters. Miss Jo Ann
Jamison of High Point and Miss Margie Hamlin of the home; one

MAUNEY
Mrs. Gladys Laverne Pegues Mauney, 2315 Ansonia Street,
Winston-Salem, passed away on Feb. 11 at Wake Forest University
Baptist Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 4, 1931, in Davie
County to Mrs. Bessie Miller Pegues and Mr. Oliver B. Pegues. She
was a lifelong resident oFWinston-Salem and a member of Carver
Road Church of Christ. She was married to Mr. Charles E. Mauney,
who preceded her in death in 1972. She leaves to cherish her mem
ory: one daughter, Ms. Tanja Marie Logan of the home; one aunt,
Mrs. Nathan Revels, and son of 264 Terrace Ave.; a host of cousins,
other relatives and friends.
A service in her memory was held Feb. 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Carv
er Road Church of Christ. Brother Harvey Drummer Jr. officiated.

PARROT!
Mr. James H. Parrott, 1310 Underwood Ave. in Winston-Salem
passed away on Feb. 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was bom on
Jan. 28, 1924, in Darlington, S.C., to Jeter and Carrie Parrott. He was
retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was a longtime and
faithful member of Hanes Memorial CME Church, where he was a
member of the Steward Board, superintendent of Sunday school,
district lay leader for the Winston-Salem/Greenville District and del
egate to annual and general conferences.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his sons, Charles (Michelle)
Parrott of Winston-Salem and James (Jackie) Crawford of Walker
town; one sister, Eloise Parrott; one brother. Arthur Parrot of Win
ston-Salem; grandsons. Master Cameron I. Parrott. James Fields and
Joseph Fields; one granddaughter. Elizabeth Craw l ord; a very spe
cial devoted friend. Janice Benjamin; and numerous nieces,
nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Many persons had
the wonderful experience of knowing Uncle Bird, Bird. Big Daddy.
James of Parrot's loving and gentle nature. He will truly be missed
by all.

STEWARD
Mr. Albert Steward. 137 Wheeler Street, Winston-Salem, passed
away on Feb. 9 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Steward, "a gospel
singing man to his heart." was born on Sept. 20. 1930, the son of
Rachel Chapman and Chambers Elder. Fie attended Lancaster Coun
ty Schools and lived many years in Kannapolis. He later moved to
Winston-Salem, where he resided with his w ife for 47 years, Frances
J. Steward. From this union, daughters Donna and Ivy were born.
"Big A" was a gentle man of strength. He was a proud, dedicated,
hard-working man who made friends easily and judged people only
by their hearts. He enjoyed singing, baseball, basketball and boxing.
He had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed yard work. He was a
retired filter operator from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 28.5
years of service. He was a member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion
Church and enjoyed his membership with the Gospel Choir and
Men's Fellowship Group. He also enjoyed worshipping with New
Bethel. Emmanuel and Union Baptist churches. He was also a mem
ber of the "radio famous" Camp Meeting Choir for many years.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his wife: Frances: three
daughters. Doris S. (Ron) Ingram of Landis, N.C.. Donna E. Stew
ard and Ivy M. Steward of Winston-Salem; a lov ing and devoted
granddaughter. Marsheeka D. Steward, and grandson. Austin S.

TUCKER
Mrs. Bertha Lee Crawford Tucker, formerly of 904 Gray Ave. in
Winston-Salem, passed away on Feb. 15 in Danville, Va.. at the
home of a daughter. She was born on Feb. 19. 1915. in Clinton. S.C..
to William Edward Crawford and Maggie Gilliam Crawford and
moved to Winston-Salem at a very early age. She was a member of
First Waughtown Baptist Church for almost 81 years. She was the
former wife of Mr. James E. Tucker of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Tuck
er was preceded in death by her eldest son. James H. "Sonny" Craw -
ford.
She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Sgt. First Class
William E. Tucker. U.S. Army (retired}, of Winston-Salem. Lewis
Ciene (Sonali) Tucker of Los Angeles. Calif., and James Leander
Tucker of Winston-Salem: three daughters. Ernestine Tucker
(Lemuel) Morris of Danville. Va.. Pastor Margaret Tucker (George)

Mrs. Fannie Jackson Vance, 115 Hardwick Court. Winston
Salem. passed away on Feb. 10 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice
Home. She was born on May 10. 1913. in Darlington. S.C.. to the
late David and Fannie Jackson. She lived in Winston-Salem most of
her life. She w as a member of Eastside Church of Christ and was a
retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 45 years of

She is survived by three sons: William H. Vance Jr. (Barbara),
Ira Vance (Nieasia), both of Winston-Salem, and David Vance of
Fayetteville; one daughter. Betty V. Gray (Robert) Gray of the home;
12 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great
grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Cleo Vance of Winston-Salem; two
very dear friends. Mozelle Booker and Mrs. Starks; a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Feb. 14 at I p.m. at the Chapel of Russell

Ms. Eula Fulton of Sunrise Towers, passed away Feb. 7 at her
residence. She leaves to cherish: one son, Lewis (Jacqueline)
Hunter: two sisters. Dollie (Verdell) Bishop and Beulah Watkins;
three brothers. Joseph (Judith) Settle, Silas Settle Jr. and Ralph Set
tle.
The funeral was held Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at Beasley Chapel. A

LACKEY
In loving memory of our brother, uncle and father bom Feb. 7,
1928, to the late Ronnie Lackey and the late Annie Mae Ora Dell
Woody of Winston-Salem, Mr. Benjamin Woody Lackey departed
this life Feb. 12 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center following a
long period of illness. He was employed by the City of Winston
Salem Street Division for more than 12 years and was a member of
Canaan Baptist Church.
Surviving are: one sister, Gladys Milam; one brother, James
(Grade) Jenkins; one sister-in-law, Addie Jenkins, all of the city;
sons. Thayers (Debbie) Shuler, Benjamin Lackey Jr. of Leeburg,
Fla.; daughters. Angula, Erica Lackey of Leeburg. Fla.; stepchildren.

host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews. One devoted niece, the late

Mrs. Ethel Williams passed away on Feb. 16 in "cenville, S.C.
Mrs. Williams leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Tina

Ms. Shirley J. Pettigrew, formerly of 3823 Piedmont Circle,
departed this life Feb. 11 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home fol
lowing a period of illness. She was bom Feb. 9, 1941, to the late
Oscar and Bemice Allison Pettigrew. She was preceded in death by
a sister. Louise Pettigrew, and a brother, Jimmie Pettigrew. She
leaves to cherish: one son, Curtis Pettigrew of Tennessee; three
daughters. Sharon. Teresa and Tina Pettigrew of Winston-Salem; 10
grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Robinson and Ellen Mitchell, all of
Winston-Salem; four brothers. Cephus, Charles and Kenneth Petti
grew of Winston-Salem and Lawrence Pettigrew of Texas and a host

Edna Apple Barham Hauser of Brian Health and Retirement Cen
ter in Winston-Salem, formerly of 1225 Magnolia Street, passed away
Feb. 14 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funer
al was held Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. at City Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Bill
Ireland and Rev. T.W. Estes officiated. Burial followed in Greenview
Cemetery.
A native of Caswell County, she was a daughter of the late Waltei
and Sarah (Sally) Combs Apple and was bom Oct. 22.1903. She lived
in the Reidsville area in her early years and married Howard L.
Barham. who later became a minister. As the wife of a minister, she
also lived in Mount Airy and Salisbury. N.C.. and Chester S.C., sup
porting her husband in carrying out the Lord's work. She was a faith
ful member of Ardmore Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday
school and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was
a kind and compassionate person, whose positive and loving spirit was
an inspiration to many people. After her husband. Rev. Barham died,
she moved to Winston-Salem in 1958 and began working at the N.C.
Baptist Home. She married Olin Hauser. who died in 1971. After retir
ing from the Baptist Home, she continued to work as a home health
assistant as long as her health permitted.
