Held the evening of March 14, The Chronicle's 19th Annual Community Service Awards Banquet was an event filled with good times, including honors for a slate of individuals and groups who have left their marks on this city in invaluable ways. The awards spotlight movers and shakers, volunteers, those who work to better relations between people of various cultures and races, and those who have worked hard all their lives and excelled in their various fields. This year's event was held at the Grand Pavilion of the Adam's Mark Winston Plaza Hotel. More than 800 people attended the event, which featured not only the honorees, but entertainment and a special appearance by Dan Blue, one of the Democrats running for U.S. Senate. Those honored were either nominated by Chronicle readers or picked by a special committee that reviewed the list of nominations. The Talent Local talent was plentiful at the banquet. The entertainment for the evening consisted of performers who are well known and those who are not so well known. Above left: The Housing Authority of Winston-Salem Ensemble performed several gospel selections. Above right: Dancing Latin used their sleek moves to bring the crowd to its feet. Left: Members of the Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble brought their well-known style of performing to the banquet. The director of the ensemble was one of the honorees. Below: Spirit of Amani, a bur geoning gospel and soul groun. brought its unique vocal style to the ceremony.
