New Hope will celebrate
51 years 'For His Glory'

On May 26 New Hope
Missionary Baptist Church
will celebrate 51 years of
service to God. its members
and the community. This
year's theme will be "For
His Glory." This auspicious
occasion will be commemo
rated by three services.
Rev. Robert E.
McGowens Sr., pastor of
Galilee Missionary Baptist
Church of this city, will
declare the sacred word at
the 8 a.m. service. During
the 11 a.m. service, the host
pastor. Rev. J.C. Parks, will
deliver the message "We are
all in this together."
A ground-breaking cere
mony for the church's
expansion will immediately
follow the morning service.
When the expansion is com
pleted. New Hope's seating
capacity will increase by
300. In addition, the expan
sion will include a book

store, library media min
istry and educational/meet
ing rooms.
Celebrations will culmi
nate with a 4 p.m. service.
Dr. John H. Walker, pastor
of Macedonia Baptist
Church in Charlotte, will
proclaim the anniversary
message. Founders, former
members and friends of
New Hope are invited to
attend any and all of these
services to witness yet
another milestone in the
Dr. Walker
church's history.
New Hope was founded
in 1951 by the late Rev.
Spurgeon Stevenson. For
mer pastors include the late
Rev. William T. Holloway
and late Rev. Samuel L.
Hodges.
In 1992. Rev. J.C. Parks
was called to New Hope's
pulpit as the fourth pastor.
Under Parks, the member
ship has grown from 40 to
more than 700. a new
church was constructed in
(?v. McGowens
1997. and 18th Street was
renamed New Hope Lane.
Many ministries have been
added under his leadership,
including a video/audio tape
ministry and a television
broadcast on CAT-TV of
Winston-Salem.

Orleans Baptist Theological
Seminary in New Orleans,
La., where he earned his
master of divinity degree.
He also studied at Drew
University's doctor of min
istry program.
He is a member of the
executive board of the
Michigan Chapter Southern
Christian Leadership Con
ference and has served as
vice president and execu-.
tive board member of the
Detroit NAACP. He is pres
ident of Redeemer Commu
nity Development Corp.,
which provides housing and
a better way of living for
youths and adults.
Smith has received many
accolades. His talents are
many, including community
activist, publisher, colum
nist, evangelist and vocal
ist. He is the author of "In
the Shadow of C.L.

married to Cynthia Perkins
Smith for 29 years and has
one son. Rev. Conderidge

After the service, there
will be a cake-cutting in the
fellowship hall. A variety of
home
made
cakes,
pies, and
other
desserts
will be
enjoyed.

Mozzelle Caesar is the
mistress of ceremonies for this
program.
Phyliss Mosley will share
a word of knowledge from the
theme. Deborah Winfield and
Essence Barnes will sing a
duet. "You've Been So Faith
ful." The guest choir will sing.
Vanessa Duren-Winfield,
the chair of Women's Day,
will introduce the speaker.
Teresa Hymes serves as
co-chair and will assist with
coordinating the cake-cutting.
