"I don't really think about it, some days I do, but I just did it," Richardson said. By the time Richardson reached the sixth grade she realized she had not missed a day of school and decided to set a goal to maintain perfect attendance as long as she could. "One school year led into the other. I think it's great when each year started. We'd say, 'You can do it,'" said Shirley Richardson, mother of Juana, who says the family always looked at her daugh er's attendance record from a spiritual standpoint. "The devil will do anything to stop you," Richardson would say to her daughter on many mornings before school. Ron Jessup, principal of North Forsyth High School, said how proud he was of his dedicated student and how much this deed speaks of her determination at such a young age. "I think it's an outstanding accomplishment. To go from ... (kindergarten) through the 12th grade and haven't missed a day, that's an accomplish ment," said Jessup, who added that he has never encountered a student in his entire career to pull off such a feat. "I'm proud of her and proud to say that I'm her prin cipal," Jessup said of the his tory his student has made for North Forsyth. Jessup said that he and the faculty and staff at North Forsyth intend to present Richardson with a special plaque during gradua tion to recognize her superb attendance record. With final exams already out of the way and graduation around the corner. Richardson and her fellow senior class mates were not required to complete the final week of school. However, Richardson was present for this last week of half-day school days with the remainder of the North Dog from page A8 he allowed a dog in the restau rant. "This is a black restaurant, and black people don't eat with dogs," he said. Smith also said he was con cerned about health regula tions. Health regulations have been a concern at Ricky's before. In 1997,/ inspectors found evidence of live cock roaches. rodent droppings and food being kept at improper temperatures, and fined the restaurant 11,500. Clinton visited Ricky's Pit during his 1992 campaign. The restaurant later catered several presidential functions. The forum will be held at 7 p.m. in the conference room (Room 144) of the Mazie Woodruff Center. 4905 Lansing Road. The forum is the first of a series of "Talk of the Town" forums Mayor Joines will hold with all eight aldermen in their respective Forsyth students, staying true to her goal to maintain perfect attendance to the very last day. "She hasn't missed a day of school since kindergarten! It is unbelievable!" exclaimed Jake Sisco, a close friend and classmate of Richardson. "She's the best." Crediting God for shaping her into a persistent young student, Richardson definitely learned a lesson of following through until the end. "God helped me the whole way because there were days when I did not want to go (to school), so I had to get ^strength from Him," Richard son said. According to Richardson, many of her friends and peers find it hard to believe that she has never been absent from school. But her parents were always there along the way encouraging her wards. The nexl forums in the series will be held June 25 in the Southwest Ward and Aug. 27 in the West Ward. For more information, call the mayor's office at 127 2058. to stick with her goal. Over the years, Richardson never gave in to the prodding or joking from her siblings, who she says are in disbelief by her perfect attendance. Family vacations were always planned on the weekends or during holidays so as not to interfere with Richardson's attendance record. Richardson plans to spend the summer interning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. After her undergraduate studies are completed, Richardson hopes to enter medical school to become a cardiologist. As for college, Richardson doesn't foresee tracking her perfect attendance record at N.C. State because attendance is not always taken in college classrooms. She is content with having finally completed mission impossible. Burke President Alethia Gore pins Treva Taylor. Lt. Gov. Jack Geis pins Steve Hairston. Willie Gray pins Steve Freeman.
