Religion Green Street Church celebrates its first 100 years SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Green Street United Methodist Church in Win ston-Salem will continue I on "The Way of Shalom," its 100th anniversary cele ; bration, on Sept. 29, with ; preaching by Bishop Char lene Kammerer and the Rev. Dr. John Mendez. Rev. Kammerer, bishop '? of the Charlotte Area, leads the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Mendez is senior pastor of Emmanuel Bap tist Church and president of the Ministers' Confer ence of Winston-Salem and Vicinity. The day's events will begin with a prayer service at 8:30 a.m. Activities in "? revival tent, dedication of a time capsule, and a half mile walk to the site of the original church building also will precede the 11 a.m. preaching. An old fashioned barbecue lunch will be served after the morning worship, and the afternoon activities will conclude with Harambe: African Drumming and Dance in the revival tent. The Rev. Kelly P. Car penter is senior pastor of Green Street Church. Associate Pastors Ronald Perry and Abraham Bruno and District Superinten dent J. Hurley Thomas III also will participate in the service. Members Shirley Abdullah, Norma Dalton, Sharee Fowler, Dorothy Johnson, Sissy Smith and Georgia Voncannon also will take part, along with ministers Oswaldo Garcia, Michael Goode, William T. Medlin III, Clyde MoS"re, James Smith and Ellen Yarborough. The Green Street Praise Choir and the Emmanuel Baptist Spirituals Choir will sing. Artist James Williams has painted "The Way of Shalom," an anniversary mural depicting both the vision of the congregation and its debt to others whose influence has been felt in developing the Green Street Church mis sion: "To connect people to God and each other with a ministry that invites, transforms and serves with the love of Jesus Christ." "The Way of Shalom." dedicated on Sept. 24, covers two walls of a courtyard Prayer Garden. For the church's anniver sary brochure, Williams also drew sketches of ear lier church sites and illus trations of "shalom" refer ences from the biblical book of Isaiah. "The Way of Shalom" has been the theme of Green Street Church's monthlong recognition of its history and its future. "Shalom," meaning "peace," not only reflects the congregation's origins in the neighborhood just west of the Moravian town of Salem, but also the church's active presertt day outreach to its diverse community. Caldwell is a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church, where she was president of the Senior Mis sionary Department for 17 years. She is still very active in the missionary depart ment of the church. She is a^ former Sunday school teacher and member of the usher board. She attended Forsyth County schools and is con tinuing her education at Forsyth Technical Commu nity College. She is very activ.e in the Forsyth County Missionary Union and Women's Baptist State Con vention. Caldwell is well-known on the local level of the mis sionary field. She is a work er and lover of all people of all ages. She is a firm believer that seniors and young adults should be well trained in all senior organi zations and become actively involved in membership and leadership positions when the opportunity comes. She has true compassion for oth ers, and her missionary work has no boundaries when helping others in car rying out God's work. The public is invited to attend the occasion. Sullivan is a native and lifelong resident of Winston Salem and Forsyth County. She was educated in the local school system and graduated from Forsyth Technical Com munity College with an asso ciate degree in business administration. She received a bachelor of science degree from Winston Salem State Universi ty in per s o n n e I manage ment and informa tion sys tems. She has received several certificates/training in busi ness principles and manage ment. Christian education, church administration, mis sions. youth and young adult Sullivan ministries, seniors ministry and music. She is a servant leader to the Women's Auxiliary of the High Point Missionary and Education Association Inc. as first vice president and a member of the foreign mis sions and banquet committees. She is active with the Forsyth County Missionary Union. She is a supportive member of the Women's Bap tist Home and Foreign Mis sionary Convention of the N.C. Baptist State Convention and the Lott Carey Foreign Missionary Convention. She is a very dedicated and active member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius. She serves as missionary pres ident of the missionary depart ment of New Jerusalem, sen ior adult Sunday school instructor and senior choir director, as well as being a member of Women of Vision Fellowship, Pastor's Aide and the Gospel Pearls vocal choir. An employee of Novant Health Corp., Forsyth Medical Center, she has worked for more than 30 years in the M information technology department, where she has held several positions. Cur rently. she is a PC product analyst and works part time with Sears as a merchandise customer assistant. She has rendered volunteer services with Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She has served as referral agent for United Way agencies, a mediator for Medi ation Services of Forsyth County and Friends in Action program with the Forsyth County Social Services Department. She serves as a volunteer trainer for the Hold Out the Lifeline Ministry, which is trying to reduce infant mortal ity and which is sponsored by Today's Woman Health and Wellness. She has two sons, Stephen (Talia). and Ryan Sullivan (Renae), and four grandchil dren, Armani, Joyous, Stephen Jr. and Stephen B.
