DAVIS
Mrs. Daisy Mae Good Davis, 850-File Street, Winston-Salem, passed
away Sept. 17 at her residence.
She was bom Sept. 9, 1905, in Rock Hill, S.C., to the late John Jacksono
and Ola Mae Ervin. She moved to Forsyth County in her teens and resided in
Forsyth County until her death. Mother Davis was the oldest member of the
Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as church moth
er. She was a faithful member of the Sunday school, and each Sunday at 9 a.m.
sharp she opened the Sunday school with her favorite song, "Jesus Keep Me
Near the Cross." She was also a member of the Willing Workers and the Mis
sionary Society, which she served diligently. She loved her church and pastor
dearly. Mother Davis traveled throughout North Carolina and South Carolina
as a member of the Community Prayer Band. In 2002, she and her son,
Edward, were named Mr. and Mrs. Second Calvaky, and again in 2002 she and
her husband were named. Throughout her life. Mother Davis was to some a
mother, grandmother, friend, but most important, a "spiritual role model" to
all. Mother Davis was preceded in death by a daughter. Rosa Peppers.
She leaves to rejoice in her home-going: her husband. James Willie Davis
of the home; two daughters. Pastor Sarah Robinson. Mattie (Lee) Fowler, both
of Winston-Salem; four sons, James Frank (Susie) Henry of Rural Hall,
William (Theresa) Good. Edward L. (Clara) Good, both of Winston-Salem,
Theodore C. Good of Philadelphia, Pa.; a most beloved son-in-law. Harold
Peppers. She was a most cherished grandmother to 49 grandchildren, 104
great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren; two devoted granddaugh
ters, Sarina "Donnette" Williams. Pamela Burrell. She also leaves to rejoice in
her home-going: two loving aunts, Marie Mitchell of Rural Hall and Evange
list Mary Ervin of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Jakay (Minnie) Ervin of Win
ston-Salem and Joseph (Anna) Ervin of Bethania; a host of many other rela
tives and friends.
The funeral was held Sept. 21 at noon at Second Calvary Missionary Bap
tist Church. Rev. Donald Stowe officiated. Entombment was in Piedmont
Memorial Park. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrange
ments.
HOGG
Mrs. Helen Louise White Hogg, 2139 E. 24th Street. Winston-Salem,
passed away Sept. 20 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was a native of Anderson, S.C., bom on Oct. 5, 1927. the daughter of
the late Walter A. Johnson and Mazie White. She was a member of Galilee
Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Nurses Board. She
was a retired employee of K&W Cafeterias with 37 years of service. She was
preceded in death by a son, James White, and a granddaughter, Keisha Hogg.
Mrs. Hogg is survived by: her husband, James Milton Hogg of the home,
three daughters, Joyce H. Smith of Winston-Salem, Melanie Hogg of Stone
Mountain, Ga., and Johnnie Mae Hardie of Winston-Salem; two sons, David
Hogg of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ronald Hogg (Joyce) of Fort Washington,
Md.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Sanders
of Detroit, Mich.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Deloris White of Winston
Salem; a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist
Church. Rev. Robert L. McGowens Sr. officiated. Burial followed at the fam
ily plot of Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were in

FLOYD
Mr. Dwight Lafayette Floyd, 4260 Brownsboro Road, B-9. Wirtston
Salem, passed away Sept. 16 in Winston-Salem.
He was bom on June 9, 1975, in Winston-Salem to Myrtle Daniels and
Eric Shepard. Mr. Floyd was educated at Reynolds High School in Winston
Salem.
He is survived by: his mother. Myrtle Daniels of New York. N.Y.; his
father, Eric Shepard of Virginia; grandparents. Muriel Floyd Sr. of Nichols,
S.C., Minnie Floyd of Winston-Salem; a loved and cherished daughter. Arana
Floyd of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Victor Doe of Winston-Salem and
Robert Doe IV of Winston-Salem; other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Russell Funeral
Home. Rev. Calvin Runnels officiated. Burial followed at Evergreen Ceme
tery.

KELLER
Ms. Sheila Lavette Keller, 707 Mock Street. Winston-Salem, passed away
Sept. 20 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native
of Winston-Salem, bom on Jan. 29, 1962. to Arlena Thompson and I^roy
Hairston. She attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth Schools and graduated from
West Forsyth High School, Class of 1980.
She leaves to mourn: four daughters, Rosa Thompson, Corvana Keller.
Cierra Keller and Markeeta Barnes; one son, Michaun Thompson; her father,
Leroy Hairston; four sisters, Deborah T. Ferrcll, Sharon Pankey (Russell),
Charlene Bailey and Artanzia Hairston; five brothers. Marvin Thompson. Ver
non Thompson, Dexter Thompson, Frankie Gilliard and Terrance Hairston;
three aunts, three uncles, nieces, nephews; a devoted friend. Anthony; other
relatives and friends.

ROBINSON
Mrs. Rebecca Segers Robinson, 7280 Red Bank Road. Germanton.
passed away Sept. 16 at her residence.
She was a native of Lancaster County. S.C.. born Aug. II. 1910, the
daughter of the late John Ervin Robertson and Daisy Comfort Frazier Robert
son. She was a member of Moupt Calvary Holiness Church, where she was
"Mother of the Church," and a member of the church choir, the Usher Board,
past president of the Pastors Aid and the Missionary Board. She was a retired
employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., was a primary care-giver and was a
foster parent to more than 50 children.
She was preceded in passing by her first husband. Eugene Mongo Segers.

Mrs. Myrtle D. Sullivan. 3835 Shamel Street. Winston-Salem, passed
away Sept. 15 at her residence. She was born June 3. 2929 in Woodruff. S.C.,
to the late Nathan and Bernice Durham. Mrs. Sullivan was a longtime mem
ber of Shiloh Baptist Church. She was a retiree of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County School System-Cafeteria Workers. Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in
death by a daughter, Phyllis Sullivan Linville.
Mrs. Sullivan leaves loved and cherished memories to: her husband.

passed away Sept.TD.
Mrs. Williams was born in St. Pauls, N.C.. on Aug. 9, 1940 to the late John
and Ha/el Willis. She attended the public schools in St. Pauls. Mrs. Williams
was a retired employee of the city of Winston-Salem (Benton Convention
Center) w ith 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband.

CONNER
On Sept. 12, Ruthie Mae Davis Conner left this world to go to a better
place. She was born March 24, 1925, in Winston-Salem and was a graduate of
the Forsyth County public schools. She was a member of Galilee Baptist
Church.
Mrs. Conner was preceded in death by her husband, John Ross Conner.
Throughout her journey of life she gained many friends. Truly her pres
ence shall be missed.
Ruthie leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Stephanie Renee
Conner, Sandra Kay Conner and Anita Faye Conner, six grandchildren. Eyan
na (Virgil) Renee Lessane. Sharena LaShon Conner. Vemetta K. Rousseau.
Machella (Keith) McKeller, Albert Legrand Phelps II and Al Lipscomb; two

CHOICE
Mrs. Arah Watts Choice was born July 30, 1908. in Lawrence, S.C., to the
late Henderson and Etta Watts. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most
of her life where she retired from Winston-Salem Leaf Tobacco Co. Mrs.
Choice was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church, where she worked
willingly in the Sunday school. Senior Missionary and Willing Workers.
She was preceded in death by her husband. Esper Choice, and 13 siblings.
Mrs. Choice departed this life Sept. 17 at New Beginnings Assisted Living
Center.
A faithful soldier has gone home to bQ-with loved ones.
She leaves to cherish sweet memories: a host of nieces, nephews, includ
ing a devoted nephew and care-giver, John Irby. great-nieces and great
nephews; and a devoted friend, Melrose Shore.
The funeral was held Sept. 21 at noon at Union Baptist Church. Rev. Dr.
Sir Walter Mack officiated. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

JONES
On Sept. 17 an angel escorted Mildred Grant Jones to the bosom of our
Heavenly Father. She resided with her son and the Lutheran Home.
She was born to Alford and Ella Paul Grant on May 7. 1910, in Marsbluff,
Florence County, S.C. She attended Wilson High School in Florence. S.C. She
was a lifelong member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Marion, S.C., where
she was a missionary in all capacities and in the community. She also attend
ed Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall. N.C.
She was a sharecropper fanner along with her husband in Horry County
S.C., and later became a custodian at Marion High School in Marion. S.C. She
was a loving and devoted housewife and mother. She was married to Huey
Howard Jones, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by
two sisters. Julia Mae Davis and Dorothy Grant, three brothers, Johnny Grant.
Alfred Grant and Handy Grant: other relatives, Christmas Barr. Julius Fox
worth, Darleoe Gamble Grant. Martha Ann Gamble Grant. Johnny Bailey:
extended family members. Pecola Scott Watson, Alberta Barnes and Tommie

Mrs. Mildred C. MeCollough of 2401 N. Patterson Ave. was born in Chap
pell, S.C.. to the late Emma Samuel and Henry Gandy on Feb. L 1925. At an
early age she moved to Winston-Salem w ith her family where she attended the
local schools and graduated from Atkins High School, Class of 1942. She was
a member of Shiloh Baptist Chureh.
Mildred was known to her family and friends as "Mil." She enjoyed shar
ing her life with family and friends. Her legacy will live on through many sto
ries she shared with the family throughout the years. Mil's sense of humor
brought a smile to those w ho crossed her path.
She entered peace on Sept. 19 at I :()5 a.m. She leaves her legacy to: a son.
Tony; granddaughter Meria: great-granddaughter Millian. all of Winston
Salem; stepson Robert (Faye) Hamilton and daughter Kimberly of Winston
Salem; seven devoted cousins, Elease (Wheeler) Jackson of Charlotte. Carrie

Ms. Delois - aka "'Baby Jean," "Big Bird" and "Ms. Shue" - Shuler jyas
born Oct. 9, 1937 in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County to the late Deroy and
Clarjce S. Dogan Murriel. Delois was a graduate of the Forsyth Coupy
Schools. She was an employee of Forsyth Medical Center and was a lifelong
member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Ms. Shuler was active in several
organizations until her health declined: Nurse's Board, choir, missionary
department, and Pastor's Aide.
She is survived by: two daughters. Evelyn "Levette" (Phillip) Elliott and
Ramelle "Lolly" Shuler' a son-in-law, Maurice Elliott; two sisters, Annie
(Dairle) Patterson and Carolyn J. Rush; foOr wonderful grandchildren, Cab
men. Marcella. Phyllis Elliott and Donte Dykes, who all were the sparkle of
her life; two devoted aunts. Doritha Miles of Suffolk, Va.. and Mildred "Pearl"
Shuler of Winston-Salem; one great-aunt. Minnie Turner of Winston-Salem: a
devoted cousin, Jacqueline Williams of Winston-Salem: devoted family in
Fayetteville, Ronnie and Marzella Jones; a faithful goddaughter, Lisa Kim
brougli: one godson, Miciah Spruill; a lifelong devoted friend, mother, and sit
ter. Frances Ferrell: a loyal friend, Roger Lowery; an adopted son, Don Fer

SMITH
Mr. James Edward Smith. 88, of 212 Beechwood Circle passed away
Sept. 20 at his residence following a brief period of illness. He was born Oct.
$7. 1914. to the late George and Annie Smith in Bishopville, S.C. Mr. Smith
resided in Winston-Salem, where he attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County public schools. He served in World War U from 1941 to 1946. He was
employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco from 1946 until his retirement. March 1.
1983.
He is survived: by three daughters. Sherry Faye Smith, Tawana Renee
Smith (Gregory) Williams and Diane (Bernard) Porter; two sons. James
William Jones and John McMillian. all of Winston-Salem: three grandchil
dren. Gwendolyn Gwyn. Anthony Shariff Smith and Christopher Joyner; one
great-grandson. William Charles Gwyn; loving and devoted stepchildren, Glo
ria Williams. Christine (Laymon) Conner. Sophia Mason and Dorothy M.
Davis, Brevette Gray. Richard Gray. John Gray and Ronald Bankhead.

STOVER
Mr. Samuel Latham Stover of 410 Burnham Drive was bom to the late
Jerry and Pearl McLaurin Stover in Winston-Salem. He attended the Winston
Salem/Forsyth County public schools and was a 1978 graduate of Winston
Saleni State University. Mr. Stover was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army,
where he received several military honors, including the National Defense
Service Medal. Bronze Star, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign medals,
and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was a former educator of Forsyth
Technical Community College and a member of John Wesley AME Zion
Church, where he served on the Steward board, senior choir, men's chorus and
John Wesley Memorial Choir. In the community he was a member of Ameri
can Legion Post 220 and the WSSU Alumni Association. He departed this life
Thursday morning, Sept. 19. at his residence.
He is survived by: his wife of the home, Patricia Stover; five children.
