Mustangs from page BT The offensive line, with 300 pounder Matt Brim and Chris Thomas leading the way, dom inated the line of scrimmage. "We have a lot of guys who can get the job done in our offensive backfield," Wilkes said. "Seems like everyone we put in the game is playing at a high level." Jayvon Biddle, Monte Anthony and Eric Eaton led the way Friday night. Biddle scored two touchdowns (15 and 35 yards) and totaled 114 yards on only eight carries. Anthony, who tallied an 8-yard scort!; rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries and added 67 yards on three pass receptions. Anthony's totals pushed him over the 700-yard mark in rushing for the season. Eaton rushed for 51 yards on only six carries, including touchdowns :of six and 16 yards. Defensively. Gemel Smith, the Yellowjackets' middle linebacker, led the way. He was in on 10 defensive stops and added an interception for a touchdown that was nullified by a penalty. Dele Mohammed had two second-half interceptions as the Yellowjackets clamped down on the Eagles' passing attack. "Overall. 1 think Smith is the best team we've played this season." Wilkes said. "That No. I (Dion Adams) is an outstanding athlete. He hurt us some early. buOl thought our defense settled down and played well against him." In fact, the Yellowjackets helped themselves by knock ing Adams out of the game late in the second quarter. The Smith coaches held Adams out of the third period for precau tionary measures after he sus tained a head injury. Q This week against Park land, the Yellowjackets will face players with the same type of athletic ability. Jed Bines rushed for some 3,800 yards last season, and Mus tangs quarterback Monte Purvis has started every game for Parkland since- his fresh man season. "Certainly those are two outstanding players," Wilkes said. "Bines has the ability to go the distance every time he touches the football, and Purvis can hurt you with the pass and with the run. And you also can't \ forget about (Rashawn) Jordan, who can also break open the big play. ,Our defense will be put to the challenge agaih this week." Parkl&nd. thg defending staW 3-A champion, took a 35 31 victory \over the Yellow jackets last season en route to Parkland's first state title. The .Mustangs came into the 2002 season as one of the top ranked teams in the state 3-A polls. However, the Mustangs, whose offensive line was near ly depleted by graduation, have dropped losses to West Forsyth and Glenn this season. They have gotten back on course in the past two weeks, ^ taking victories over Eden Morehead and Northeast Guil ford to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference. The Mustangs' win over Carver last year was their first in seven seasons over the Yel lowjackets. Fans were turned away from the game because Deaton-Thompson Stadium's capacity was exceeded. That is one of the reasons why the game has been moved from Carver's David Last Stadium to Bowman Gray. Press Box from page BI In some cases coaches have gone to the extreme to have their players make the weight to be certified as "older lighter." League officials have been con tacted this season about coaches who have asked players to take laxatives to lose weight. That indeed is disturbing. The health issues relating to it are far-reach ? ing. A young athlete could put ?Z himself at risk for lifelong conse quences. Even more disturbing is the report that some coaches have contributed to Pop Warner play ers purging themselves after eat ing to prevent themselves from gaining weight or in an effort to lose weight. A guidance counselor at a local middle school in Forsyth County has reported to me that they have discussed the issue with league officials. However, league officials haven't been able to proceed with an investigation because the parents of the ath letes in question have not been willing to take action against the program or the coaches in ques tion. When a parent of an athlete puts the participation of the child on an athletic team in front of the overall health and welfare of his or her child, you have to question the parent's judgment. Unfortu nately that's the way it is in today's society. That is one reason why it is incumbent upon program direc tors to make sure that the people they put in charge of their teams have the best interest of the par ticipants at heart. Although there are many benefits to participation in little league sports, there can also be negative outcomes. The health and safety of each child is impor tant and should be the first and foremost concern of everyone involved. While Pop Warner football is a great activity for young football players and cheer leaders. it must be kept in its proper context. Sports are not a "life and death" matter. They should be taken seriously by people involved, but not at the risk of injuring someone's health or future development. When it gets to that point, it is high time for those in charge to take an objective look at it and make decisions that will promote growth and betterment. ? ^^^^^^?A^HHHHHHI H ^B HHH^|H ?
