BARKSDALE
Mrs. Minnie Shaw Barksdale, 1212 Springwood Circle. Win
ston-Salem. passed away Oct. 30 at Forsyth Medical Center after
two-week illness. She was the widow of the late Cornelius E. Barks
dale. Minnie Barksdale. a native of Winston-Salen^.was bom to the
late Rev. Samuel Morrison and Delia Liggins Shaw. She attended
the local public schools and graduated from the former Winston
Salem Teacher's College. Having taught in the North Carolina Pub
lic School System for a brief number of years, she later took exten
sion courses at Appalachian State University and made a career in
early childhood administration. She was a Gold Star Member of
First Baptist Church and can best be remembered for her work as a
Sunday school teacher in the junior department, a member of the
Missionary Group and the Women's Progressive Club.
Mrs. Barksdale leaves to mourn two daughters. Ms. Doris
Barksdale of the city and Mrs. Carolyn Barksdale Wallace of
Durham. Other survivors include two grandchildren. Atty. Tamela
Wallace of Charlotte and Titan Barksdale. an upcoming journalist:
and a host of other nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Nov. 2 at 12:30 p.m. at First Baptist
Churfch, Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiated. Burial followed at
Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral

BRANNON
Mr. Jarian Dewan "Jabba" Brannon. 200 East 27th Street. Win
ston-Salem. passed away at his home unexpectedly on Nov. I. The
Lord took Jarian. our son. grandson, brother, and friend, home
appropriately on All Saints Day. He was a junior at Mount Tabor
High School and a friend of so many throughout Winston-Salem.
He attended Kimberley Park Elementary and Hanes Middle School.
Jarian was full of life and always had a smile or a handshake for all
he encountered. He attended Youth Club at First Presbyterian
Church and was involved with Young Life of Forsyth County, w ith
whom he attended camp at Windy Gap and accepted Jesus Christ as
his Lord and Savior. He loved music, basketball, electronics, cars
and his family. Jarian was baptized at Emmanuel Baptist Church at
the age of 5.
Leaving to cherish this precious young man's zestful life and
wonderful memories are: his mother. LaTonya F. Brannon: his
father. Alfonzo Mitchell: a maternal grandmother. Frances Brannon
Mitchell; a paternal grandmother. Mary Mitchell: a paternal grand
father, Alfonzo Mitchell Sr.; a maternal grandfather. Robert Smith:

The funeral was held Nov. 5 at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral
Home Chapel. Elder Raymond Banner Jr. officiated. Burial fol
lowed at Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
CAMPBELL
Mr. Tajmadge Dewit Campbell Jr.. 750 E. Clemmonsville Cir
cle, Winston-Salem, went to spend his eternal life with our Lord and
Savior. Jesus Christ, on Oct. 20. Ted. as we all knew him. was bom
toTalmadge Dewitt Campbell Sr. and Juanita J. Campbell-Wesley
on April 22. 1950. in Winston-Salem. Educated in the local school
system, he graduated from A H. Anderson High School in 1969 and
attended Forsyth Technical Institute. Ted was a member of First
Waughtown Baptist Church. Ted spent his life in the Belview/East
on community and was a neighbor and friend, and known to many
for his gift of conversation. He was a devoted uncle to his niece,
nephews, great-nephews and great-niece.
Ted leaves to mourn his death devoted family members, includ
ing: a sister. Mrs. Tammara C. (Lanyard) Staley: a niece. Mrs.
Brandy S. (Vincent) Crosby: two nephews. Masters Lanyard Staley
Jr. and LaJae Staley; two great-nephews. Masters Vincent Crosby
Jr. and Elijah Crosby; a great-niece, little Miss Maya Crosby, all of
the city; two aunts. Mrs. Martha Magalene Holman of Philadelphia.
Pa., and Ms. Rachell J. Campbell of the city; a special second "mom
and dad." Mr. Thomas H. and Mrs. Gwendolyn G. Lytle of the city;
a special devoted friend. Ms. Barbara Bruton: numerous devoted
cousins; and a host of other family and friends.
A memorial service was held Oct. 28 at Clark S. Brown & Sons
Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dennis Bishop officiated. Clark S.

Ms. Vickie Lynn Long Elder. 416-C North Highland Ave.. Win
ston-Salem. passed away Nov. 7 at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salent. born
on Nov. 15. 1952. to the late Ralph and Mary Long.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: three sons. Scotty

Mr. Thaddeus Tyrone Fisher. 4428 Stowe Street, Winston
Salem. passed away Nov. 6 at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice
Home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem,
born on Feb. 17. 1947, the son of the late Rosa Fisher and Willis
Miller. He was a graduate of Anderson High School (Class of 1965).
was a member of Dreamland Park Baptist Church and was a retired
employee of R.J. ReynoldCTobacco Co. He was preceded in death
by his parents. Willis Miller and Rosa Fisher Watson; two brothers.
Malcolm Watson and Michael Miller.
He is survived by: his wife, Lana Leecost Fisher of the home;
daughters. Dawn Fisher of the home. Rosetta Fisher and Melba
Peebles, both of Winston-Salem, and Sherry Peebles of Deland,

GREEN
Mr. Charles Olis Green, known to family and friends as "Otis,"
555 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Apt. B. Winston-Salem, passed
away Nov. 7 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem and was of the
Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served in the Viet
nam War. where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. .He was an
employee with the City of Winston-Salem Parks and Recreation
Division.
He is survived hy two sisters: Forgena Rogers of El Cerrito.
Calif., and Treather Green of Boston. Mass.; a devoted friend.
Kathy Cunningham of Winton-Salem; other relatives and many
friends.
The funeral was held Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Russell
Funeral Home.

GREENE
Ms. Dorethea Aladine Greene. Reisterstown. Md.. passed away
Nov. 2 in Baltimore. Md.
She was born on April 15. 1934. to the late Buster B. and Ettie
Greene in Winston-Salem. Dorethea was educated in the public
schools in Winston-Salem, and graduated as valedictorian of her
class from St. Anne's Academy in 1952. In 1956, she received a
bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from the College of Misericor
dia in Dallas. Pa. Dorethea taught school and coached girls basket
ball at The junior-senior high school in Easton. Md. Shortly after
moving to Baltimore. Dorethea began her 45-year career with the
Maryland Stat ' ealth Department Bureau of Laboratories in 1957
as a laboratory scientist where she worked until her death.
Dorethea became a member of New All Saints Roman Catholic
Church in Baltimore, where she was a faithful member of the Pas
toral Council. Dorethea was always interested in sports. Through
the years, she became an avid golfer. She was a member of both the
Pitch and Putt Golf Club and the Forest Park Golf Club. She held
several offices, including president of the Forest Park Golf Club and
tournament chair for the Pitch and Putt Golf Club. In 1982. she won
the amateur title and the right to represent the state of Maryland at
the USGA Public Links Championship in Eugene. Oie. Dorethea's
greatest memory was the hole-in-one at Southern Pines Country
Club in 1985. Her other interests included tennis, bowling and
playing cards. She was also a licensed real estate agent with Long
and Foster Realtors. Dorethea was always willing to lend a helping
hand to those in need. She was generous and thoughtful. Dorethea
will be greatly missed by all.

Mr. Otis Lee Marsh. 625 West Sixth Street. Apartment 2-E. Win
ston-Salem. passed Nov. 7 at his residence. He was born on July 19.
1950. in Winston-Salem to Mable Ruth Marsh and Howard Lip
scomb Sr. He was a graduate of Anderson High School, was a
member of Gethsemane Hope Baptist Church, was a former
employee of Merita Bakery and was last employed at Days Inn. He
was preceded in death by his mother. Mable Ruth Marsh; his grand
mother. Larena Bivens; a granddaughter. Karena Marsh; a sister.
Patricia A. Marsh; and a brother, Artis Lee Marsh.
He leaves to mourn his memories: two daughters. Rener Renee
Marsh and Catina Michelle Marsh: two sons. Renick Jermaine

Mr. Isaac Mobley Wilson, affectionately known as "Boot," 1525
East 23rd Street, Winston-Salem, passed on Nov. 4 at his residence.
He was born on March 6, 1929, in Winston-Salem, the son of the
late Abraham Amos Wilson and Annie Mobley. He was preceded in
death by his son, Terry Wilson; his parents, Abraham and Annie
Wilson; three brothers and three sisters. 0
He leaves to cherish fond memories: his beloved wife of 30
years, Mrs. Hattie Jeter Wilson; two devoted daughters, Nakia
(Anthony) Harris and Alycia Crawford of the home; two brothers,
David Wilson and Herman "Bye-Bye" (Barbara) Wilson, all of Win
ston-Salem; one sister-in-law. Rosa Wilson; devoted nieces,
nephews, cousins; two devoted goddaughters, Ernestine Crawford
and family, Willette Alexander; a devoted godson. Roger Lampkins;
and a host of devoted relatives and friends. He will be greatly
missed by those that were near and dear to him.

BECOAT
Infant Raekwon Marquez Becoat, of 414 B. Freedom Street,
was born Aug, 1, 2002. in Winston-Salem to Donald and Martricia
Richardson Becoat. He departed this life unexpectedly Monday
morning, Nov. 4. 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John
Richardson, and paternal grandmother, Bertie Mae Becoat.
Left to cherish Little Raekwon's memory are: his parents. Don
did and Martricia Becoat; siblings. Diontra and De'John Becoat,
Anthony Smith, and Mercedes Goodien; maternal grandmother.

BENJAMIN
Mr. James Lucas Benjamin Sr. aka "Tract," was born March 29,
1923, in Sumter. S.C., to the late Ethel Lucas. He was a resident of
Winston-Salem for more than 50 years. He made his transition to a
new life Monday morning. Nov. 4. at Wake Forest University/Bap
tist Medical Center following a period of illness. Mr. Benjamin was
a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He
was a retiree of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He also worked
for the city of Winston-Salem for a number of years. He was of the
Baptist faith.
Mr. Benjamin was predeceased by his spouse, Mabel Adams
Benjamin.
He is survived by: three daughters, Betty Lou Benjamin of Win
ston-Salem. Sandra Johnson of Bronx. N.Y., and Jamie Booker of
the home: a beloved son. James Benjamin Jr. of Winston-Salem; six
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchil
dren; two sisters, Careatha (Cleveland) Gilliam and Rosa Lee Coop
er. both of Winston-Salem; several nieces, nephews, and cousins,
including devoted nieces Vickie Rickard and Terri Banks; six sis
ters-in-law. Dorothy Aldridge, Mildred Dendy, Hennie Mae Adams
and Willie Mae Robinson, all of Winston-Salem. Carolyn (Harold)
Jones of South Carolina and Barbara Rawlings of Bronx. N.Y.; one
brother-in-law. Joseph (Gladene) Adams of Winston-Salem; three

Mrs. Vera James Alexander Clark. Winston-Salem, passed away
Nov. 4 following an extended illness. She was preceded in death by
a son. Foy "Pete" Alexander, and daughter. Vivian C. Hawkins.
Left to cherish her memory are: a sister. Grace Haughton of the
home; one son. Mitchell Alexander (LindaI: daughters, Bernice Bai
ley and Marilynn Lewis. (Dennis), all of Winston-Salem; 12 grand
children: 12 great-grandchildren: five great-great-grandchildren.

GRIFFIN
The angel of God called one of his faithful servants from labor
to a sweet reward on Nov. 7 at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit.
Mrs. Ernestine Hamm Griffin, formerly of 845 Rich Ave., was born
in Sumter. S.C.. to the late Rev. Otto Sylvester and Male Hamm.
Mrs. Griffin was a charter member of Bethlehem Baptist
Church, which her father founded. She was a well-known person in
Winston-Salem and surrounding cities and belonged to many organ
izations.
M?. Griffin was predeceased by her husband. William Griffin;
a bromer. Frederick Hamm; and a sister; Alice Hamm Gallimore.
She leaves to cherish her "memory her Bethlehem family; one
niece. Mae Francis Lewis of Winston-Salem; two great-nephews.
Adrian Kevin Clinton of Winston-Salem and Lewis Clinton of
