Win ston-Salem. passed away Oct. 30 at Forsyth Medical Center after two-week illness. She was the widow of the late Cornelius E. Barks dale. Minnie Barksdale. a native of Winston-Salen^.was bom to the late Rev. Samuel Morrison and Delia Liggins Shaw. She attended the local public schools and graduated from the former Winston Salem Teacher's College. Having taught in the North Carolina Pub lic School System for a brief number of years, she later took exten sion courses at Appalachian State University and made a career in early childhood administration. She was a Gold Star Member of First Baptist Church and can best be remembered for her work as a Sunday school teacher in the junior department, a member of the Missionary Group and the Women's Progressive Club. Mrs. Barksdale leaves to mourn two daughters. Ms. Doris Barksdale of the city and Mrs. Carolyn Barksdale Wallace of Durham. Other survivors include two grandchildren. Atty. BRANNON Mr. Jarian Dewan "Jabba" Brannon. 200 East 27th Street. Win ston-Salem. passed away at his home unexpectedly on Nov. I. The Lord took Jarian. our son. grandson, brother, and friend, home appropriately on All Saints Day. He was a junior at Mount Tabor High School and a friend of so many throughout Winston-Salem. He attended Kimberley Park Elementary and Hanes Middle School. Jarian was full of life and always had a smile or a handshake for all he encountered. He attended Youth Club at First Presbyterian Church and was involved with Young Life of Forsyth County, w ith whom he attended camp at Windy Gap and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He loved music, basketball, electronics, cars and his family. Jarian was baptized at Emmanuel Baptist Church at the age of 5. Ted spent his life in the Belview/East on community and was a neighbor and friend, and known to many for his gift of conversation. She was born on April 15. 1934. to the late Buster B. and Ettie Greene in Winston-Salem. Dorethea was educated in the public schools in Winston-Salem, and graduated as valedictorian of her class from St. Anne's Academy in 1952. In 1956, she received a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from the College of Misericor dia in Dallas. Pa. Dorethea taught school and coached girls basket ball at The junior-senior high school in Easton. Md. Shortly after moving to Baltimore. Dorethea began her 45-year career with the Maryland Stat ' ealth Department Bureau of Laboratories in 1957 as a laboratory scientist where she worked until her death. Dorethea became a member of New All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore, where she was a faithful member of the Pas toral Council. Dorethea was always interested in sports. Through the years, she became an avid golfer. She was a member of both the Pitch and Putt Golf Club and the Forest Park Golf Club. She held several offices, including president of the Forest Park Golf Club and tournament chair for the Pitch and Putt Golf Club. In 1982. she won the amateur title and the right to represent the state of Maryland at the USGA Public Links Championship in Eugene. Oie. Dorethea's greatest memory was the hole-in-one at Southern Pines Country Club in 1985. Her other interests included tennis, bowling and playing cards. She was also a licensed real estate agent with Long and Foster Realtors. Dorethea was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was generous and thoughtful. Mr. Benjamin was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a retiree of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He also worked for the city of Winston-Salem for a number of years.
