Winston-Salem State
*
softball sweeps Panthers
FROM STAFF RFFORTS
The Winston-Salem State
University Softball team had a
wonderful start to the season. It
was definitely a good day for
the Lady Rams on Sunday.
WSSU traveled to Peters
burg. Va., to play a double
header series versus the Lady
Panthers of Virginia Union.
The Lady Rams finished off
the Panthers in less time than it
did for the team to make the
four-hour drive home to Win
ston-Salem.
The Lady Rams, coming
off of a doubleheader split with
Virginia State University on
Saturday, came out and cruised
to a two-game sweep of the
Lady Panthers of Virginia
Union, winning the first game
10-2 and closing out the series
with a 16-0 win in the second
game.
To the Panthers' credit.
they were understaffed as
many of Virginia Union's key
players are still tied up with
commitments to post-season
basketball activities. Howev
er. the Lady Rams played very
well in both contests and
showed why they have to be
considered one of the favorites
for the CIAA championship.
In the first game of the day,
the Lady Rams scored in every
inning, picking up a run in the
first, three in the second, one in
the third and fifth, and two
each in the fourth and sixth
innings. Heather Davis turned
in a superior performance on
the mound, pitching a complete
game two-hitter, and was sad
dled with only one earned run
as she struck out 11 batters.
Amber Nance, Shannon
Davis and Lakelsha Carney
each picked up a pair of hits in
the contest as the Lady Rams
cruised to victory.
Terry predicts Tar Heels to win ACC
R.J. Reynolds star basket
ball forward Reyshawn Terry
is an athlete who may be easy
to misunderstand. He's just so
confident that it may come
across as arrogance. But he's
just an honest guy. The truth
of the matter is there are
VERY few prep athletes who
are better than Ray on the
court.
He's got so many elements
to his game. He can shoot,
dribble, pass, dunk and set
teammates up for points. He's
a rare species in high school
basketball nowadays.
He's also one of the hard
est people to get in contact
with. I spent two and a half
days trying to find him for this
interview. Once we finally
met 1 found out the he's a real
ly good kid, with a strong
head on his shoulders. He and
I talked about everything from
UNC's win over Duke to his
own defeat to Chris Paul in
Reynolds' loss to West
Forsyth, and where Ray's
focus is today.
Anthony: Reyshawn
Terry, what's the deal?
Reyshawn: Nothing much,
man. I'm just chillin'.
Anthony: You must feel
kind of strange for your sea
son to be over so soon. 1
mean, you're used to playing
for the state title. How do you
feel right now?
Reyshawn: Yeah, but I
basically thought our season
was over before it even start
ed. We had a lot of difficulties
before the season even started.
I feel it was because we had a
freshman on our team. No one
has ever heard of a freshman
on Reynolds' team. 1 believe
that was a big deal to every
body. We had a bunch of
chaos this year, and we
weren't playing as a unit.
Anthony: What's the dif
ference between the present
team and the squads of the
past two years?
Reyshawn: The team
chemistry. If you're not play
ing as a unit, you ain't gonna
make it too far.
Anthony: Did you really
believe the team was going to
win it all this year?
Reyshawn: Not really, but
once the season progressed 1
felt a little better. But I lost it
again after some of those big
games. 1 mean, when we were
going to those big competi
tions and losing, it wasn't
really a big deal, 'cause we
ain't used to playing talent
upstate. But we just knew we
were gonna beat everybody in
our conference. It didn't work
out like that. I mean, we're
everybody's big game. We
basically took things for
granted and got beat.
Anthony: Let me ask you
this: How confident were you
after you all lost to West two
straight times?
Reyshawn: See, West
Forsyth wasn't really a big
deal either. We always get into
it with them. I just thought it
was going to be different in
the playoffs, but we didn't
take care of business. And we
didn't make it to the regionals.
So I can't really say too much
about that.
Anthony: Now you've got
to get ready for UNC. What
are you going io miss the most
about high school?
Reyshawn: Basically,
being on the road and crack
ing up with the boys (team).
I'm going to miss practice,
and hearing coach West teach
us about basketball and life.
He really teaches you how to
be a unit. He really taught me
how to be a better person.
Anthony: You and Chris
Paul played AAU ball togeth
er for Kappa Magic, didn't
you?
Reyshawn: Yeah.
Anthony: See, you two
already have a lot of chem
istry <vith one another.
Reyshawn: We talked
about that over the summer.
Evidently, it wasn't what he
and his parents wanted, so he
had to follow his heart. And I
had to follow mine.
Anthony: Now, you've
played with and against Chris
Paul. Is he the best player in
the state?
Reyshawn: I'm the best
player in the state.
Anthony: Whoa. That's
saying a lot now.
Reyshawn: I'm the best
player. I don't think anybody
is better than me in this state.
That's just the, way I am, but
everybody has their own opin
ion, though.
Anthony: You know it's
not too late to take back your
commitment to UNC. You
could still sign with Wake
Forest. I'm sure everyone
would love to see you and
Chris Paul on the same team.
Reyshawn: (Laughs.)
Naw, man. I'm "aight."
Anthony: You've also
played against LeBron James.
Is he worth all the hype? Is he
worth the number one pick in
the NBA draft?
Reyshawn: Yeah, he is.
He's a good player. If he's not
the top pick, he's definitely
going to be in the top five.
Anthony: What made you
realize that UNC was where
you wanted to go to school?
Reyshawn: Man, I've
been watching them since I
was real little. I love the
school's history. It's like a big
family. Once you leave, it
ain't like you just went there
and that was your college life.
You're a part of Carolina's
staff forever. You know what
I'm saying? They also put a
lot of players into the league
(NBA). 1 also like the coach
ing staff.
Anthony: Do you think
Doherty is going to survive all
the attacks he's getting?
Reyshawn: Oh yeah. It
ain't gonna be like that when I
get there. I know I'm gonna
make a difference.
Anthony: What did you
think about your Tar Heels on
Sunday? They looked good
against Duke.
