? of fact, that's usually the first
.-^offense of many student-ath
letes across the country. 1
?? wonder how university offi
i. cials found out. Chances are.
|"One of the players told some
one what was going on.
About 14 of Vijlanova's
.^ players were suspended for
Ihe rest of the season for the
incident. The Wildcats suited
up only seven players in their
game against Pittsburgh on
Sunday. Can you believe Vil
lanova lost by only two
points. Anyway, my point is
that nothing new is going on
w ith college basketball or col
lege sports in general. More
schools are just hammering
down on their teams because
of the long-term risk of break
ing NCAA rules and the
effects it can leave on a uni
versity for years to come.
Not all teams are breaking
the rules. Not all schools are
helping the players. But it's
definitely going on. It will
probably continue to happen.
But I can tell you this: More
and more schools will contin
ue to get caught, especially
when players ultimately come
clean in the end.

More lhan 25 kids from Old
Town. Polo, and Miller Park
recreation centers were treated
to a special night at Wake For
est University on March 4
These kids and their directors -
Art Blevins. Todd Barr, Dan
Arial and Aaron McCorkle -
were treated to an event known
as "Eat with the Deacs" last
week.
The kids got an opportunity
to tour the Demon Deacons'
athletic facilities and watch a
practice session of the Wake
Forest football team in spring
training activities. The children
also met Wake's head football
coach. Jim Grobe.
More than 20 Wake Forest
student-athletes, from various
sports, served as tour guides for
the group. The student-athletes
showed the group around cam
pus and then had dinner with
the kids at the WFU dining
hall. The athletes seemed to
take to the kids rather well and
made the kids feel very special.
The highlight of the
evening occurred when Wake
basketball stars Josh Howard,,
Justin Gray and Steve LaPore
entered the dining hall to eat
with the kids. Most of the chil
dren's eyes lit up.
"All the kids had a huge
smile on their faces when they
came in," Blevins said. "Their
eyes all kind of lit up. This was
truly an evening and special
event that the kids will remem
ber forever."
The athletes concluded the
occasion by taking pictures
with the youths and signing
autographs.
"This was great to have
supper with all the Wake Forest
athletes from different sports,"
Blevins concluded - "and, of
course the best player in the
Atlantic Coast Conference. 'J
Ho."

i worried - just concerned.
[ That was a big concern." ?
1 Brewingtou* added: "I
i think my guys just needed to
J relax. Once we did that,
j things simply started working
? a little better for us. But we
! still couldn't handle their
| pressure. I Think that Mur
' phy's Law came into effect
i today. Normally, we do well
| against the press. We have
' two .of the best ball handlers
i that you want to see, but that
! big front kind of intimidated
| us a little bit. We just got
' away from the basics that we
i teach every day in practice."
| The second half looked a
' lot like the first quarter - with
i the Falcons in complete con
! troL Northwest came out of
j the locker room with.,a lot of
i confidence and determina
j tion. They were simply
| unstoppable in the final half
j of play.
? "I told them at halftime
! that it was do-or-die time."
J Lawson said. "I told them that
? it was bp to them. They
I responded well, and we got
J the win. I'm very proud of
I
them. Defense was the key."
The trio of Brandon
Wacke. Trevor Lawson and
Lamar Edman proved to be
too much for the Bears.
Wacke led the charge with 14
points, eight rebounds and
five"steals. Edman ;flso fin
ished the game with 14
points, with 11 coming in the
fourth quarter. Lawson con
tributed with eight points.
five steals and five rebounds
to go with six Sssists.
Bryan McKorkle - who
finished with 11 points, two
assists and three rebounds -
led the Bears.
"By no way does this loss
put a damper on our season."
Brewingtbh concluded. "This
is the first championship
game of any level in the histo
ry of Hill Middle School. We
worked and played hard?this
year. This whole team will he
back next year, and we'll be
ready to do it again."
