Storms cannot be avoided, but we can choose who the captain is Lesson Scripture: Mark 4:36-41; 5:2-13a. Lesson Aims: to cite evi dence of Jesus' authority over all things, and to worship the sovereign Lord with renewed inspiration. Background: Mark began with a declaration of Jesus being the Son of God. From there, this fast-paced Gospel moves us through His baptistw and temp tation by Satan. His ministry began in Galilee with teaching and calling the first disciples. The people recognized that He had authority. While in Capernaum. He drove out a demon and healed Peter's mother-in-law along with others. To rest and com mune with God, He withdrew to a solitary place very early in the morning. The disciples searched and found Him proclaiming that many people desired to see Him. They went elsewhere in Galilee, and Jesus continued to preach and heal. Even a leper was healed and instructed to say nothing but show himself to the priest. The former leper couldn't keep it; he spoke freely about the event. After last week's les son in Chap ter 2, the opposition mounted. He healed on the Sabbath, which led the Phar isees and the Herodians (3:6) to plot to kill Him. Herodians were friends and support ers of Herod Antipas, the tetrarch ot Galilee ("The New Jerome Biblical Commentary"). All of the Twelve were chosen by Mark 3:19. The teaching and healing continued. In the early verses of Chap ter 4, Jesus taught the parables of the sower, the lamp, spiritual growth and the mustard seed. Those probably took the majori ty of the day. The disciples received explanations for the stories where the crowd didn't (4:34). Lesson: Once the teachings ?Ill Mildred Peppers 1/ Sunday School Lesson I and explanations are rinisneu. Jesus tells the disciples let's go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (lake). Note how Christ takes time to rest and never loses focus on His mission. While on the short trip (eight miles) to the other side a storm develops quickly. "The NIV Standard Lesson Commentary" states: "The cooler breezes from the Mediterranean blow into the basin of the Sea of Galilee, cre ating violent storms. The winds are so fierce that boats can sink." Coupled with the dark ness fear can arise. The disciples go to Jesus for help. He gets up and calms the storm. He asks them two ques tions: Why are you afraid? And do you have so tittle faith? They wake Him because of the storm; when He does something about it they are awestruck! The second incident in today's lesson continues to veri fy that Jesus is the Son of God on a mission. On the other side of the Sea in Gentile territory. Jesus and the Twelve encounter a demon-possessed man. The demons recognize Him and ask not to be driven from the area. Jesus drives them from the man into some pigs on a nearby hill. All of the sw ine are drowned in the lake (I 3b). The remainder of the chapter records the healing of the woman w ith the issue of blood and Jairus' daughter being raised from the dead. Application: What a mighty God we serve! He has authority over all things. Jesus, the unquestionable Son of God, has that same power. The passsage Mark 3, 4. and 5 addresses His ?power over nature, demons, dis ease. and death. What could the critics say? Our boats encounter storms. Sometimes we see them coining and bury our heads while on other occasions they come up from nowhere. Storms cannot be avoided, but we can choose who the captain is. Do you have faith in your captain? Our faith grows as we expe rience life. Faith in Jesus' authority allows us the comfort in knowing who is in complete control. There is no greater power. As followers of Christ, do we give "lip service" to the peo ple on the fringes of society? According to Him we must address that issue as well. Someone needs to hear about this awesome authority. Get him or her to Sunday School. /\ Goler Metropolitan celebrates anniversary SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE On March 16.
