J Youth Leader Whoever said that young adults are self absorbed and lack concern for others obvi ously never met Bryant McCorkle. The recreation supervisor for the Reynolds Park Recreation Center , -has spent most of his adult life reaching out and lifting up others. McCorkle's career with the city's recreation department stretches back for nearly a decade. He has distinguished himself in his career by spearheading programs that have given teenagers a posi tive alternative to the unseemly streets. McCorkle is the coordinator for Reynolds Park's successful league basketball program. Although the program is only a year old, already it has attracted the interest of more than 340 kids from the neighbor hoods around the center. McCorkle found similar success when he implemented^! basketball program at the Martin Luther King Recre ation Center. The center's late night hoops program is almost 10 years old now and still going strong. More than 3,000 people attend ed the Save Our Children Youth Crusade in 2000. The event, which was coordinated by McCorkle. developed methods for local com munities to use to combat crime. MeCorkle has also served as the chairman of the Martin Luther King Precinct (1993-1999) - when he worked, tp register new voters, especially ^young adults - and on the Housing Authority of Winston Salem Board of Commissioners. A city native who graduated from Winston-Salem State Univer sity, McCorkle shows no signs of slowing down. Recently, he has started working as a home school coordinator, helping to facilitate relations between schools, students and parents. " - McCorkle has been married to his high school sweetheart, Lisa, for six years. They have a 5-year old son, JoJuan. Bryant McCorkle holds up his son.
