I SARA LEE CORPORATION Recognizes Earnest Morris as a Special Tribute Award recipient ?? Earnest Morris poses with young golfers at Winston Lake Golf Course. Love for the Game Earnest Morris left this earth far too early, hut his legacy will live on through those he touched through his love of work. Morris was the head professional at Winston Lake Golf Course for more than 18 years when he died last fall at the age of 59. Morris loved the game of golf all of his life, a love that began in his youth in Mont gomery. Ala. There Morris' Little League coach turned him on to golf. He and his childhood friends would construct makeshift golf courses in open fields and hone their burgeoning skills. Not surprisingly. Morris always had an interest in young golfers. He was instru mental in starting the junior golf program at Winston Lake, which grew from 12 members to more than 64 by the time Mor ris died. Ten young people who played in the junior golf program went on play col lege golf on athletic scholarships, a fact that always made Morris extremely happy. By most accounts, the Winston Lake Golf Course is not the same place now that Morris is gone. But those who knew him best say that the course is a much better place now than when he first arrived near ly two decades ago. Gwen Morris, his widow, said that. Earnest Morris would have wanted it that way. "He tried to make a difference. He saw golf as a gentlemen's sport not only just in the way you were taught, but in thec&ay you presented yourself." >?i Morris' headstone Morris and his wife, Gwen.
