Hoopers continue to shine
in Old Town blacktop league
Recreation center hoops heating up
CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT
The bailers in the 7-12 and
13-16 age groups aren't play
ing around on the Old Town
blacktop. They continue to put
on some serious action during
the games at the center. The
young bailers are playing just
as well as the older players.
Little 76ers 26. Little
Spurs 18 - Once again Eric
Sinclair led the 76ers to a vic
tory, with 11 points and an
amazing day on the boards
Cozy Jackson also banged
down low all game, while put
ting up six points. Jordan Bat
tle had three points, followed
by Kayla Blevins. Angle
Rinard, Brandon Staton, each
with two points.
The Spurs, on the other
hand, had a tough time trying
to get their shots to fall. Brit
tany Tate once again led the
Spurs in scoring, with nine
points. Alex Moreno finished
with three points for the Spurs.
Michael Butler and Shantel
Psalm each scored two points.
Quashan Young contributed to
the Little Spurs.
Little Lakers 28, Little
Nets 17 - The Little Lakers
were able to pull out a victory
over the Little Nets due to
great man-to-man defense.
The Lakers applied the defen
sive scheme the entire game.
The Nets also w ere stunned by
the guard play by the Lakers.
The two guards, iared Smith
and Kyle Jones, both had
seven points to finish the game
as the top scorers for the Lak
ers. Garrett Turner finished
with six points: George
Moore, five: and J.P. Penn,
three
Steven Osbey. an addition
to the Nets lineup, led the team
in scoring with eight points in
his first game. Brandon For
ney had four points. Sam
Daley scored three points, and
Conner Sullivan scored two
points.
The older bailers weren't
exactly disappointments on
the court. They had some great
action as well.
Lakers 67. Spurs 66 -
This game came down to the
wire. The outstanding guard
play of Dearon Smith and
Irvin Moser put the Lakers
over the top in this game.
Smith finished with an amaz
ing 31 points, while Irvin mus
tered a whopping 29 points.
They exhibited great leader
ship skills throughout the
game.
The Spurs also played
well They had three players
who finished in double fig
ures: K. McLaurin (18 points).
Stephon Royster (16. points)
and Brandon Patton (12
points). Don Skipwith and
Tony Lawson finished the
game with eight points apiece
for the Spurs. Alvin Gentry
scored six points in a losing
effort.
76ers 47. Nets 37 - The
76ers were able to pull out the
win over the Nets with out
standing defense and offense
from Jake Claffe. Claffe put on
a show by finishing with 16
points. Ray Penn scored 15
points.
They had a cast of excel
lent players such as Richard
Duhon (five points),
Demetrius Shore (four points).
Chris Butler (three points).
George Moore and Jess Claffe.
The Nets tried to put on a
respectable showing of talent
as well. Don Skipwith led the
charge w ith 12 points. He was
helped by Cody Blackburn.

Wake Forest Days coming
to Carl Russell Rec Center
Event will hit East
Winston for first time

History of some sort will be
made on July 29. Wake Forest
Days, featuring Wake Forest
football coach Jim Grobe and
men's basketball coach Skip
Prosser, is coming to East Win
ston for the first time in history .
"I really couldn't tell you
why we haven't had it in that
part of town before." said Gleen
Hart. WFL assistant marketing
director. "But we're very excit
ed to have the opportunity to
meet with some of the fans in
that area. We've been getting a
lot of support from East Win
ston. and we want to pay a little
back and make our bond even
closer.
"I think everyone will have a
good time. There w ill be at least
one player from all of our sports
there, as well as coach Grobe
and coach Prosser. This is a pret
ty festive occasion. We're going
to bring out the inflatables and
everything."
Wake Forest Days is a day
full of fun and excitement for all
Wake Forest fans. It w ill include
inflatable games for the kids,
prizes and an autograph session
w ith Wake coaches and student
athletes. Hot dogs, hamburgers,
chips and drinks will be avail
able for people in attendance.
The event is scheduled froQL.
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. next
Tuesday at Carl Russell Recre
ation Center.
"We're all pretty excited
around here," Carl Russell
director Aaron Bailey said.
"These kids have never seen an
event like this, and it's also
going to be good for them to
meet some of the Wake Forest
players. I think they're (WFU
players are) going to ,be sur
prised how many of these kids
want to meet them - not to
mention the coaches who w ill be
here.
"We've been going all out
this entire month. Like I said
before. I'm just glad that Wake
Forest saw fit to hold the event
here, and we welcome them
with open arms. We're looking
forward to the event."

Wake Forest will host anoth
er event for the fans that's simi
lar to Wake Forest Days. The
?Bfemon Deacons w ill move clos
er in their efforts to make WFU
the Triad s ACC team when they
host Family Fan Fest 2003.
"This is a lot similar to Wake
Forest Days, except there will be
more athletes for this event,"
Hart said. "We'll bring out more
inflatables and try to do more
things for this, This is my event.
It went really well last year, ao
I'm trying to build on that."
Fan Fest is scheduled for
Aug. 16 at Grove Stadium. The
event will last from I until 2:30
p.m. Fan Fest will give fans a
chance to meet their favorite
Demon Deacons and coaches.
Fans will have the opportunity
to get autographs and take pic
tures with their favorite Deacs. I
There also will be a Special ;
appearance by the WFU cheer
leaders.
Admission is 55 per person,
per event. No RSVP is neces
sary as walk-ups are welcome.
