Sales tax holiday will start tomorrow

' reinforcements for the weekend.
? That's when large crowds are
expected at shopping centers
and malls throughout the state
for the state's second sales tax
holiday.
Most members of the Tom Joyner Morning Show are expected in Winston-Salem.
Shoppers will be exempt
from paying sales taxes on
many items from Friday until
Sunday. The sales tax holiday
was passed by the General
Assembly in 2001 as a way to
specifically help families save
on their back-to-school shop
ping.
Clothing items, shoes and a
school supplies priced under
$ KM) per item qualify for the
sales tax exemption. Sports and
recreation equipment of $50 or
less per item and computers and
educational software for person
al use that cost under $3,500 per
item are also exempt. Clothing t
iccessories, jewelry, cosmetics,
trolective equipment, wallets,
urnitute and layaway transac
ions are among the items not
rovered by the exemption and
vill be subject to the applicable
ax.

free holiday, and the holiday
was a huge success. State retail
ers saw a more than 150 percent
increase in sales during last
year's three-day holiday.
"If the success of the holiday
last year is any indication, shop
pers should be coming to stores
and malls in droves," Fran Pre
ston, president of the N.C.
Retail Merchants Association,
said in a statement. "Retailers
know that this (is) a big week
end for consumers and are plan
ning special sales to coincide
with the three-day holiday so
not only will shoppers save on
the sales tax they normally pay,
but will also have a wide variety
of special retail pricing to help
their dollars go further."

giveaways. It's going to be
very active." said Vestal.
The inside of the coliseum,
says Vestal, will be trans
formed to look like an actual
theatre, complete with chan
deliers and a curtained stage
to give it an "upscale look."
The Pre-Sky Show party
will be an alcohol-free event
and Vestal says that anyone
who arrives with alcohol will
not be permitted to enter.
"We're looking forward to
having a great time and hav
ing a chance to meet some
great people on that Thursday
and Friday,"Vestal said.
The Official Sky Show and
After Party with the Stars will
cap off the day's festivities at
the M.C. Benton Convention
Center at 9 p.m. on Aug. 8.
The Tom Joyner Founda
tion has adopted Livingstone
College as its School of the
Month.
All money raised at Sky
Shows during ihe month of
August will go towards schol
arship for Livingstone stu
dents. The Tom Joyner Foun
dation is a nonprofit organiza
tion that raises money for stu
dents at Historically Black
Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs) around the country.
Grace Adams-Square,
director of Title III sponsored
programs at Livingstone, says
that proceeds from the Tom
Joyner Foundation will bene
fit students studying in a vari
ety of disciplines.
"The school thought it was
a great honor to he selected
and found that this would be a
very wonderful and beneficial
opportunity for our students."
said Adams-Square. "The
scholarships are very diverse
and will cover students in
many different categories, not
just high GPA students...we're
pleased to have this opportu
nity to assist our students."
Livingstone will also host
a reception on Aug. 8 at the
Adam's Mark Hotel where
Joyner will be present from 6

al donations can be made to
scholarships for Livingstone

receives
WSF grant

tion has awarded a Vhl.OtK) grant
to Mother WIT Family Develop
ment Center, said Lee Faye
Mack, executive director.
According to Mack, the grant
will be used to help support
salary and benefits for the associ
ate director position, consultant
fees, and leadership training for a
second year.

and has served more than 600
families with educational, out
reach, grassroots leadership
development, information and
referral services. There is also a
