Bethania Hauser Williams Russell family holds reunion

The descendants and
friends of Bethania Hauser
Williams Russell held their
annual Family Reunion July
17 through July 21 at the Cir
cus Cirqus Resort in Las
Vegas, Nevada.
Attending the Reunion
were 40 descendants of the
Hauser Williams Russell Fam
ily and Friends. They came
from Washington, D.C., Cali
fornia, Nevada, North Caroli
na, Ohio, Pennsylvania,Vir
ginia and Maryland.
Dr. Charlie B. Hauser - a
World War II Veteran with
five battle stars, a retired uni
versity professor, a former
state legislator, and a human
rights activist who is a great
grandson of Bethania, was the
oldest descendant at the
reunion. Harri F. Breckenber
ry, a great-grandson of Betha
nia's youngest daughter, Dixie
Russell Moore, was the
youngest descendant in atten
home 10 celebrate his mothers
birthday. The celebration is
now held in the Yad
kinville/Winston-Salem area
one year and at a site outside
of the area the next year. (
Activities (luring the
Reunion included a social, a
banquet and a church service
at the Paradise Bible Baptist
Church. Other activities
included a tour of the Hoover
Dam. a Gladys Knight con
cert and visits to area resi
dents and interesting places in
the Las Vegas Area.
Dr. Jannis Floyd, associate
professor at Mansfield Uni
versity, is president of the
family. She planned the activ
ities, presided at the events
and conducted a business
meeting. Sterling Hauser, a
policeman from Shaker
Heights, OH. was elected the
new president of the family,
and Sherrie H. Simmons of
Atlanta was elected vice pres
ident. They will plan and pre
side at the 2004 and 2005

Hauser, a Southern merchant
and planter. Before the end of
slavery she had added three
sons to the Hauser hold. After
slavery she married Lewis
Williams. After Williams'
death she married David C.
Russell. Four children were
added to the family during
each marriage.
Belhania's descendants
live throughout the United
States and abroad. They are
engineers, ministers, business
men and women, artists, musi
cians, educators! military per
sonnel, firemen, social work
ers, actresses, human rights
activities, a dentist, a physi
cians, and a state legislator.

The family has had a
Reunion annually for more
than 80 years. It began when
Martin, Bethania' s second
son, started inviting family
members and friend to his
reunions.
Bethania, the maternal
head of the family, was pur
chased in 1840 for $850.00 in
Bethania. and brought to Yad
kinville. She served as a house
servant in the home of T. C.

Anyone interested in
applying for City of Winston
Salem University, a free 10
week course on city govern
ment and how it operates,
must submit an application by
5 p.m. Aug. 1.
Similar to the Police
Department's Citizens' Police
Acadefhy, City of Winston
Salem University will give
citizens a better understand
ing of city government. Top
ics will include city gover
nance and finance, sanitation,
utilities operations, streets
and transportation, public
safety, recreation, and inter
nal city operations.
Classes will meet on
Thursday nights starting Sept.
11 and ending Nov. 13. The
course will be limited to 25
residents from Winston
Salem and Forsyth County,
who will be selected based on
their applications.

nications Department in City
Hall, 101 N. Main St. Suite
336. The application also is
available on-line at

N.C. Cooperative
Extension gets grant

The N.C. Cooperative
Extension Service, Forsyth
County Center, has been award
ed a grant of $15,000 by The
Winston-Salem Foundation,
Maurene S. Rickards, County
Extension Director announced
recently.
According to Rickards. the
grant will be used to provide
fourth-year funding for the Tan
glewood Arboretum outreach
and restoration project. A
"This grant from the win
ston-Salem Foundation will
\ allow the Forsyth County Mas
ter Gardeners Association under
the leadership of Toby Bost,
Horticultural Agent, to continue
their project to renovate and
expand the Arboretum at Tan
glewood Park." Richards said.
This volunteer group has
accomplished much in three
short years to greatly improve
the Arboretum.
The Winston-Salem Foun
dation is a community founda
tion that support charitable pro
grams in the greater Forsyth
.County area. It waji. founded in
1919 by Colonel Francis Fries
with a $2,000 gift and now
administers over 870 funds with
total custodial assets of nearly
$180 million. In 2002 the Foun
dation awarded grants totaling
$18.2 million, including a broad
diversity of discretionary grants
totaling $3.5 million.
