True repentance comes after an admission of guilt Lesson Scripture: Joel 2:1-2, 12-14, 28-29 Lesson aims: to express three perspectives on the "Day of the Lord," and to under stand that repentance is neces sary to be in right relationship with God. D Background: The book of Joel was written during the ninth or eighth century B.C. The author's name means "The Lord is God." "The Day of the Laid" is the theme. God sent the prophets to deliver His message. Most messages had a twofold meaning: one for that time and the other for the future. "Joel's urgent mes sage meant life or death for Judah" ("UMI Direction Teacher") as well as for the current and future generations. The book opens with a pro nouncement of judgment by ! God. Locusts were to come and totally destroy Judah. In the Hebrew language, nine terms meandocust. From the grasshopper family, locusts came in several varieties. Those grasshopper-like insects terrified people. When they came in large numbers (swarms), destruc tion was the outcome. At any given time the swarms were so large that the skies turned dark. Once again the people strayed from God. and He decided to fix the problem. Before He brings judgment, the people were warned. Lesson: Many of the Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson prophets speak of the "Day of the Lord" or "that day after the exile." It signifies "God's direct intervention in human history to restore His right eous order" ("Echoes Adult Teacher"). Obadiah 15, Joel 2:13 and Malachi 4:1-2 give several aspects of this phrase. Obadiah says that it is the day of reckoning for all nations. In other words, each nation will reap the seeds it has sown. Joel says that it is a day of repentance and renewal. God wants to see evidence on the outside that denotes an inward change. If repentance comes. He will bless instead of pun ish. Malachi pictures the day as one of purification and heal ing. The term also is found in the New Testament. Joel's call is one of repen tance or face the conse quences. Doom is on the hori zon unless people go back to God. We have strayed as the Jews strayed. True repentance comes after an admission of guilt - not "The devil made be do it" but "1 alone am respon sible for my sins." Stop pretending holiness and examine yourself. God is not impressed with our rituals and outside shows of right eousness. He knows our hearts. The Day of the Lord is pending. That's not a maybe; it's a fact.
