Matthews named 2003 Black College All-American CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT American Urban Radio Networks recently announced that N.C. A&T placekicker Yonnick Matthews was selected to the 2003 Sheridan Broad cast Network Black College Ail American Team. Matthews, a 5-10. 210-pound senior from Uniondale, NY, broke four school kicking records this past season, including Held goals made (IS), field goals in a game (5, in a 29-14 victory over Elon University), and longest field goal (52 yards). He was selected to the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference First Team, after leading the Aggies to the 2003 MEAC Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I AA Playoffs. The Aggies finished with a 10-3 record and a No. 4 rank ing in the SBN final Black College poll. He has also been selected as the player of the year from the 100 per cent Wrong Club of Atlanta, Ga. Matthews became the first Aggie since the 2001 season to be selected as a Black College All-American. Matthews Couple of Deacons selected in MLS Super Draft CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT The 14-year-old phenom. Freddie Adu, and D.C. Unit ed weren't the only big win ners at the Major League Soccer Super Draft last Fri day. Two Wake Forest men's soccer players, goalkeeper William Hesmer and forward Jeremiah White, were select ed in the MLS Super Draft. Hesmer was taken in the sec ond round, 17th overall, by the Kansas City Wizards. White was picked by New England. 23rd overall, in the third round. Hesmer, missed the regu lar season finale, the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, due to injury. However, he was still the sec ond goalkeeper taken in the draft. White was the fourth collegiate forward selected. "I'm just looking forward to training with guys like Tony Meola," said Hesmer. "I'm looking forward to pushing him to become a bet ter goalkeeper, and hopefully him in return pushing me to become a better goalkeeper. Maybe in the next few years, whenever he decides to hang 'em up ? or maybe before hand ? I can take over. Both were NSCAA Ail Americans, both three-time All-ACC selections for Wake Forest. Hesmer was a first team NSCAA Ail-American as a senior and White was the 2003 ACC Player of the Year. White, a native of Lans downe. Pa., had eight goals and five assists for the Dea cons as a senior. He leaves Wake Forest as the school's second all-time leading scor er with 37 goals, 19 assists for a total of 93 points. Hes mer, a native of Wilson. N.C., holds the Wake Forest career records for shutouts and goals against average. Footnote: Wake Forest's Jamie Whitten, Lauren Crandall and Claire Laubach - all key members of the Deacons' 2003 NCAA championship team ? have been selected for United States Junior National Teams. Whitten was named to the Under- 19 team and Cran dall and Laubach were cho sen for the Under-21 team. All were selected by USA Field Hockey after team tri als, in Virginia Beach, Va. The two USA junior teams will compete in various domestic and international events in 2004 including the USA Field Hockey Summer League and annual JFK International Tournament in Virginia Beach for the UI9 team and an international tour and regional training sessions for the U21 team. The teams will also serve to prepare age-eligible athletes for next year's Pan American Junior Championships and the 2005 Junior World Cup. Whitten, a freshman back, started all 23 games for Wake Forest in 2003, helping the Deacons to a 22- 1 record. Crandall played in all 23 games, started 22 times and had seven goals on the sea son as a freshman. Laubach. a junior, scored eight goals and dished out 1 2 assists last fall. Crandall and Laubach are two of eight ACC players on the Under-21 team. Whitten is one of six ACC selections on the Under- 19 team. The Junior National Team selections are the latest in a long list of postseason honors fop. the Deacons. Recently, head coach Jen nifer Averill was named the National Coach of the Year for the second straight year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Surprise Visit Photo hy Sluart Ramson for Scholastic New York Giants Running Back Tiki Barber surprises Queens , N.Y., 5th-grader Rafe Tangorra who won Scholastic Book Clubs/NFL Writ ing Contest with a letter to Tiki , his favorite NFL player. Rafe won a free trip to Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston. The surprise meeting took place in East Hanover, N.J., Jan. 13, where Tiki was on location for a video production. Local little leaguers to get big league exposure CHRONICLE STAFF RETORT How many little league play ers, coaches and supporters would like to see their squad run out onto the field with the Win ston-Salem Warthogs during home games? The Winston-Salem Warthogiare trying to make that happen this season. The Warthogs announced on Jan. 14 that they have agreed to terms with Truliant Federal Credit Union to sponsor the 2004 Little Big Leaguers program. The program allows - area Little League teams to run onto the field with the Warthogs during player introductions and the national anthem. Teams can register for $45. The invest ment is donated to the Winston Salem Foundation, an organiza tion that benefits surrounding youth baseball programs. ACC Commissioner John Swof ford, along with former play ers, coaches and officials of the ACC including Skip Brown, Carl Tacy, Dick Grubar, Murray Greason Jr., Joe Brown and Bob Leonard, are also scheduled to attend.
