The Salem College Gospel
Choir will sing throughout the
service. Dr. Wayne Burkette,
head of Salem Academy, will
give the invocation, and Rev.
Tim Auman, chaplain. Wake
Forest University, will give the
benediction.
St. Philips Church
Dr. Brad Braxton is the
Jessie Ball duPont assistant
professor of homiletics and
biblical studies at the Divinity
School at Wake Forest. He is
the author of two books, "The
Tyranny of Resolution: I
Corinthians 7:17-24" and "No
Longer Slaves: Galatians and
African American Experience."
Braxton has also published ser
mons and a recent essay on the
role of the black church in the
new millennium.
In addition to his teaching
and scholarly activities, he is a
frequent guest preacher and
lecturer in local churches.
The service will be held in
the restored historic St. Philips.
Church building, which was
erected in 1861. The building
sat empty from 1952 to 1989,
when Old Salem Inc. restored it
and created an exhibit on the
lives of African-Americans in
Salem. The brick church and
graveyard were reconsecrated
by the Moravian Church on
May 4, 2003. and opened as
part of the Old Salem tour on
May 14, 2<X)3.

Reed, a native of Winston
Salem, is a graduate of Win
ston-Salem State University,
where he received a bachelor
of science degree in sports
administration/ management in
1998. He earned a master of
Rev. Sylvester M. Reed Jr.
science degree in divinity from
Shaw University in Raleigh.
Currently, he is the athletic
director of the local Salvation
Army Boy's Club, where he
develops and implements edu
cational activities and pro
grams for youths. He has been
a merchandising associate for
the Sports Authority and radi
ology transportation aide and
environmental Service techni
cian for Forsyth Medical Cen
ter in Winston-Salem.
Reed is married to the for
mer Revonda Propst. They
have a 1 -year-old sort,
Sylvester M. Reed III.

Horton was bom in Jamaica,
West Indies, on April 19, 1962.
She later moved to London, Eng
land. where she attended high
school and college. She then relo
cated to New York City, where
she met her husband. Ronald L.
Horton Sr. In 1 988 she moved to
Winston-Salem, where she and
her husband would start a family.
She now has three children.

entertainment. Our music is so
much an expression of our cultur
al heritage, being a blend of
African and European sounds.
On Saturdays during Febru
ary, various church choirs will be
celebrating our rich African
American history through song at
the Carver School Road Branch
Library. 4915 Lansing Drive.
On Feb. 7, the youth choir of
Grace Presbyterian Church was
