The
Royal
Court
Sunrise Towers crowns king and queen at
first-ever June Jubilee
BY T. KEVIN WALKER
THE CHRONICLE
The sun had barely set on Sunrise Towers Friday before the music start
ed blaring and the smell of hot dogs and burgers on a grill began to
waft through open windows in the high-rise building. The sounds and smells
attracted many of the 200 people who call Sunrise Towers home. They came by
foot, wheelchair and walkers, many decked in their finest suits and dresses.
It was the first time that Sunrise had held its June Jubilee ? a fun mix of
food, music, dance and fellowshipping - but afner last week's success, residents
hope to have many, many more.
"We are just trying to let our residents know that there is still life and good
times after a certain age." said Wallace Andrews, president of the Sunrise Tow
ers residents' council.
The towers, located along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, once served prima
rily as housing for the elderly, but in recent years the complex has opened its
doors to people of all ages. The June Jubilee saw a good mix of senior citizens
and middle-age people. Sunrise Towers' residents are a tight bunch, but prop
erty manager Barbara Simmons said residents' busy schedules often keep them
from spending quality time together.
To remedy that, every so often the residents' council organizes a social
event, things like Bingo tournaments and potlucks.
"They enjoy getting out of their apartments and coming together for things
like this," Simmons said.
The success of the June Jubilee will actually make it possible for Sunrise
Towers residents to get together more in the future. The event was partly a
fund-raiser. Residents sold tickets to the event to raise money. They sold near
ly $200 in tickets, money that will be used to fund future gatherings.
The top ticket sellers were honored during the June Jubilee by being
crowned king and queen of the event.
