Weekly reading program "Reading One to One" will meet on Mondays at 5:15 p.m. at Ivy Arms Community Cen ter. 1115 E. Second Street. This after-school program, sponsored by the Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.. is a part of the sorority's national read ing initiative that targets kindergarten through third graders. The objectives of the program are to increase the reading achievement and mas tery of basic reading skills for children in our community and to instill a love of reading and a love for books in the youngest reader. NCSA to offer stage combat summer session N.C. School of the Arts will offer a new summer ses sion for 20()4: Introduction to Stage Combat. The three week session, July 5-23, will take place on the NCSA cam pus in Winston-Salem. The session is an addition to the NCSA School of Drama's reg ular five-week summer ses sion (June 20-July 23), for aspiring actors and actresses. Dean's list students are those , who have attained a 3.5 GPA for the previous semester based on a 4.0 scale. High Point University is a liberal arts institution with about 3.000 undergraduate and graduate students at campuses in High Point and Winston Salem. The university offers 47 undergraduate majors, 1 1 graduate-degree programs and one graduate certificate pro gram. Brown lives in Pfafftown. Bethania will host Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration July 3 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Saturday. July 3, starting at 10 a.m.. the town of Bethania will host an Old Fashioned Indepen dence Day Celebration. There will be something for everyone on this day of down-home fun. The main thrust of events planned include a farmers market, historic home and garden tours, memorabilia of the "good ol' days." period exhibitors and ven dors, front-porch artists, children's games and crafts, and food. One thing that makes this event so dif ferent from other celebrations of the holiday is the historic home and garden tours. Some of the finest 18th century homes in the area will be on display. Many of the residents are descendants of the original settlers. The town of Bethania celebra tion on July 3 complements events in Old Salem and Bethabara on July 4, all in cele bration of the 25(Kh anniversary of the Moravian settlement of the Wachovia tract. The Wachovia tract comprises the bulk of ftirsyth County. Bethania, a National Historic Landmark, was the first "planned community" in Wachovia, preceding Old Salem. Bethania also was the first N.C. town to celebrate Independence Day. Here's an excerpt from the Bethania Historical Association newsletter: The history of July 4 as described in the records as a great cloud lifted from the people of America. The official notice end ing the American Revolution was received with great joy The North Carolina Governor issued a proclamation "calling upon all good people to fittingly celebrate this event." We know of two con gregations that complied. "In Bethania. the band ush ered in the first fourth of July (July 4, 1783) with an early morning recital. A prayer service at ten o'clock featured an exposition on Psalm 46. A lovefeast that after noon attracted many Bethania neighbors. That evening residents marched through the village in candlelight procession." Black celebrates 80th birthday SPECIAL TO THE CHRON1 CLE Ouster Mae Canty Black was born in Cam den. S.C. June 24, 1924, to Spencer and Rosa Rivers, Mrs. Black came to Winston-Salem at the age of 7 years old. She grew up on Chicago Street. As a young lady, she married Ernest B. Black, and they moved to Gra ham Avenue. They were married for 40 years until his death in 1988. She joined Hanes CME Church and has been a faithful member for 73 years. She has been a member of the Senior Gospel Choir and the Mis^ibnary Board. * Mrs. Black has four girls and two boys, of which one son is deceased. She has been living at Mount Zion Place for the last 13 years. Jesus has blessed her see to 80 years, and may she have many, many, more. She has 13 grandchil dren and 30 great-great grandchildrAi.
