Obituaries Russell Funeral Home 822 Carl Russell Ave. 722-3459 BELL Mrs. Lelia Alston Bell, 85, of 5331 Sunrise Terrace and for merly of Thomasville, departed this life on July 26 at the Win ston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center following an extended period of illness. She was a native of Darlington, S.C., born on Aug. 18, 1919, the daughter of Allen and Lelia Alston, and had lived in the area for over 65 years. She was of the Baptist faith and a retired domestic engineer. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Thomasville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband. C. Bell; a daughter, Frances Johnson; a son. Bright Thomas; and a grandson. Bobby Johnson. She is survived by one sister, Frances Alston Stewart of Philadelphia, Pa.; a son-in-law, W.J. Johnson of Darlington, S.C.; four grandchildren; a niece with whom she lived, Lelia G. Edgefield, and a devoted nephew, Woodrow Wilson, both of Winston-Salem; other nieces and nephews; a host of other rela tives and friends. The funeral was held Aug. I at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Rus sell Funeral Home. The Rev. James Clement officiated. Inter ment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Home directors were in charge of the arrangements. CROCKETT Mr. Willie Lee Crockett, 57, of 1400 E. Sedgefield Drive passed away on July 25 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on June 29, 1948, in Winston-Salem, the son of Codell Moses Crockett and Ada Ruth Carethers Crockett. J4e was preceded in de'ath by his parents; his brother. Codell Crockett Jr.; and an aunt. Miss Carrie Carethers. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife; Maggie Elizabeth Jackson Crockett; two children. Cynthia Jackson of the home and David (Ann) Jackson of Hampton, Va.; two sis ters, Linda (Horace) Harris and Yolanda (Benjamin) Singletary. both of Winston-Salem; a devoted great-grandson, Kahlil Lee Jackson: and a host of other family and friends. The funeral was held July 30 at I p.m. at the Chapel of Rus sell Funeral Home. Pastor Arteria Crockett officiated. Interment followed in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Russell Funeral directors were in charge of the arrange ments. LYLES Mr. Bravette Lyles Sr., 90, of 316 Forest Hill Ave. passed away on July 27 at Silas Creek Manor. He was born on Jan. 7, 1915, in Eastover, S.C., the son of the late Nathan and Estelle Lyles. A humble, diligent working man, he devoted his life to his family and loved ones. During the early years, he sold coal, wood and cultivated many plots of land to support his family. He was a retired worker of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with nearly 35 years of dedicated serv ice. He was ever active and disciplined to work. Following his retirement, he began a small business enterprise of recycling cardboard and other paper products. Oftentimes he could be seen throughout the business sections of downtown Winston Salem in his signature overloaded truck. He had a hearty laugh, a kind word and warm handshake for all his customers. He praised God for his long life, while he invested time and manual labor to helping his elderly neighbors cut grass, chop wood and perform general repairs. He was an avid gardener and loved to fish. He was a well of wisdom to drink from the knowl edge of life to those he talked with and an ardent man of God, always encouraging others with words of praise and admonition to be ever faithful to our Lord and Savior. More than half a cen tury ago he accepted the Adventist Message He was a faithful member of the Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He served as a deacon, usher, treasury counter and van driver. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Barber Lyles, and his second wife, Lucille T. Lyles, as well as three sib lings and one son. He leaves to cherish lifelong memories: four children. Bravette (Clare) Lyles, Beatrice (Jimmel) Williams. Robert (Brenda) Lyles of Winston-Salem, and Joseph (Robin) Lyles of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Lyles of Selma, Ala. Additional family members include: Evone (Calvin) Sim mons of Ohio, Gwen Dixon of Indiana. David (Shelia) Massey of Virginia. Myra Walker of Florida. Nadine (Mosie) Burgess and Elaine (Jerry) Massey of Winston-Salem; his siblings, Ruth Dunlap of Winston-Salem, Doris Guinyard and Janie Lyles of South Carolina, Bertha Faust and Nona Grant of Pennsylvania. Alice Anderson of California; two sisters-in-law, Lula Lyles of Winston-Salem and Nana Ruth Lyles of South Carolina; one brother, James (Carrie) Lyles of South Carolina; 27 grandchil dren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, one of whom he lovingly referred to as "Fifth" Azaria; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held Aug. I at 1 p.m. at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. Elder Moses Edwards officiated. Inter ment followed in the family plot of Evergreen Cemetery. ROBINSON Mr. Steven Earl Robinson, 35, of 300 Woodchase Lane, Marietta, Ga., and formerly of 1050 N. Cleveland Ave., Apt. O, passed away on July 28 at his residence unexpectedly. He was born on Feb. 15, 1970, in Washington, D.C., the son of Evelyn Robinson and Clarence Blalock, and spent most of his life in Winston-Salem. He was employed with Austin Print ing in Atlanta, Ga., and was a graduate of West Forsyth High School, Class of 1988. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving parents; a broth er, Christopher L. Robinson of Winston-Salem; aunts, .Marcella (James) Smith of Walkertown, Vera Robinson of Winston Salem; uncles, Gilbert (Dorothy) Robinson, Joe (LaVonda) Robinson, all of Winston-Salem, Lester Robinson of Goldsboro, and James (Deborah) Robinson of Suisun City, Calif.; and a host of devoted family and friends who loved him. Gamer will be installed as pastor of Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 N. Hawthorne Road on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1 1 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Sawyer, president of the Southern Province Provincial'Elders' Con ference, will preside over the installation. A potluck luncheon will be held immediately after the service to welcome the Rev. Gar ner and her family. Garnet graduated from High Point College in 1969 and received her Master of Divinity degree from Moravian Theologi cal Seminary, Bethlehem, Pa., in 1998. She was received as a dea con in the Moravian Church in September 1998 and was received into the order of pres byter of the Moravian Church in North America in September 2004. Gamer has previously served at Trinity Moravian Church, Win ston-Salem, as an associate pastor and later as the senior pastor. In 2003, under the direction of the Provincial Elders' Conference, Moravian Church, Southern Province, Garner was charged with developing a program of spiritual care for pastors serving in the Southern Province of the Moravian Church. Her most recent appointment within the Moravian denomina tion was as the interim pastor for spiritual discernment at Good Shepherd Moravian in Kem ersville. Garner and her husband, Harold, live in Winston-Salem and have one adult son, Glenn. Fries Memorial Moravian Church is at 251 N. Hawthorne Road. Pastor Carter to speak at New World SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Josephine Carter, pastor of Voices of Truth Ministries, will speak at New World Cappadocia Outreach Center on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m. Carter is originally from Troutman, N.C., but now resides in Winston-Salem. She is devot ing her time to outreach. She is a member of Churches in Unity, where Melvin Wilkins Jr. is the bishop. Carter graduated from Kate Biting Reynolds School of Nurs ing in 1956, from N.C. Central University in 1970 with a B.S.N. degree, and from the University of Chapel Hill as a family nurse practitioner in 1974. Now she works as a teacher and preacher in Christ. The men and deacon min istries are sponsoring this pro gram. Elder Vince Little, chair man of the Deacon Board, and Robert Northington, president of the men's ministry, are in charge of the service. The Mass Choir and the Praise Team will sing. New World Cappadocia Out reach Center is at 245 Melody Lane. All proceeds will go to the building fund.
