Church to hold women's conference SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The United Cornerstone Missionary Bap tist Church deaconess ministry will hold its annual women's conference, "A Woman of Unexpected Faith," on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Best Western Salem Inn and Suites, 127 S. Preregistration for the conference is required. The guest speaker will be Minister LaVetta Astrop Williams of Phillips Chapel Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. Williams is a native of Winston-Salem and the daughter of Christine Peak Astrop and the late Henry Lee Astrop Sr. She attended Oral Roberts University Graduate School of Theol ogy and Mission Modu lar Studies. She has been in the pulpit min istry since 1978 and was ordained by Dr. J.C. Hash in 1988 and Bishop R.K. Hash in 1989 at St. Peter's World Outreach Center in Winston-Salem. She was also ordained and licensed under the Later Rain Harvest Fellow ship, Las Craces, N.M. That is also her Bethel. Williams served as director of prayer min istry at St. Peter's World Outreach Center. Under her leadership, God blessed her to establish a prayer ministry counsel, school of prayer, praise and fasting ministry. She also served in various ministries during her 1 1 years there, including women's ministry event See Conference on ?7 Galilee honors the Barbers SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Galilee Missionary Baptist Church paid tribute to Videll Sewell Barber on Sunday, Sept. 1 8, for her 40 years of dedicated, loyal service as the church clerk. She recently retired. She was also recognized by Galilee as the Senior of the Week. A reception in her honor was held after the 10:30 a.m. wor ship service. The program included special presentations from the church family as well as individual and ministry trib utes. Her integrity, dedicated service, graceful manner, and wisdom afford her the highest respect. A native of Toccoa, Ga? she was reared in Winston-Salem. She is a graduate of Winston Salem State University with a B.S. degree in elementary edu cation. ? She was employed by the Bethlehem Center as a day care center director at the Kimberly Park Day Care Center and retired from that position in 1 989 after 20 years of dedicated service. Her spouse of 50 years, James T. Barber Sr., was recog nized by the church as the Senior of the Month. Hymn Choir, deaeons ministry and adviser to the nurses ministry. A native of York County, S.C.,he was raised in Rock Hill. At 16 years of age. he joined the Army. He relocated to Winston Salem and was employed by RJ. Reynolds Tobacco until his retirement. He is a founding member of the Slater Park Community Club and is known by his neighbors for his helpfulness.and kindness. Marlin Harris, a national ly acclaimed and Spirit-led preacher and teacher, will be the revivalist. Harris received the call to preach when he was 9 years old while living in South Car olina. Shortly thereafter he preached a sermon at Phillips ordained at the age of 12. He Harris has been preaching for 1 8 years and has ministered in numerous revivals, Christian retreats and special worship services throughout the nation. Harris is cur rently serving as the founding pastor of New Life Baptist Church of Lithonia, Ga. Since its inception in 1995, New Life has grown to about 3,000 members. Harris is married to Moni ca W.
